The first day of spring in South Africa!

It's officially the first day of spring in South Africa! Did we have spring-like weather? Nope, not even close. Did that stop me from enjoying this lovely Thursday? Also no!

I decided to go for a little stroll around Campus, since sitting in an office the entire day can be depressing. I wanted to enjoy the first day of spring and remind myself of how amazing nature can be. We had a cold, dry winter and everything green faded away, but now that warmer weather is approaching life is returning!

Life is not only returning in the form of green trees and bright pink flowers but also on the faces of students. Winter can be hard on some of us mentally. If it's too cold, some students tend to stay home, missing out on class and social interactions. It's wonderful to see all the happy faces interact with one another again.

Seeing the way nature changes around us during the season of spring, and seeing a difference in the way everyone moves around, reminds me of the way we handle obstacles in life. You see the flower could have decided to give up when that first cold winter morning showed up. After two weeks of icy winds, the flower got tired and went dormant. It waited out the winter. Waited for the first crisp sunbeams of spring, and popped out again.

We as people tend to give up when we find ourselves in unwanted or stressful situations. We abandon projects after the first failure. Used the wrong shade on an art piece? I'm terrible at art. Came 6th in a race? I'll never be an athlete. Had a cake that fell in? I think I'll stick to buying cakes. We don't allow ourselves to go dormant. We don't allow ourselves to adapt, learn or grow. We just give up.

Next time you feel like giving up, allow yourself to have a winter/ a dormant stage/ a break and get back to blooming the next day.
