"Melkkos" A Traditional South African Dish

Well hello, stranger...

Some of you may know that I was born and raised in South Africa. I have family that has moved to the USA, UK and Australia, and they miss traditional South African dishes. A braai in South Africa and a BBQ in the USA are two different things. I've had a few friends over the years that were exchange students and they would always point out that we have weird dishes. Maybe it's normal for me since I grew up with it? Nevertheless, I think food should be shared and enjoyed by everyone.

I decided to make "melkkos" over the weekend. Melkkos is a traditional South African dish and is loved by many. Most South Africans will tell you stories about "melkkos" from their childhood. It has a similar taste to milk tart but is a lot sweeter. My father says it's a pudding/ dessert, while I on the other hand disagree. I will eat this for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The warm weather will also never stop me from enjoying food. It was the first time that I attempted to make it on my own since my mother would usually take over from me at step one. It was very easy and so worth it!

Come along and maybe attempt to make it yourselves!

Ingredients

WhatsApp Image 2022-09-11 at 17.52.50.jpeg

  • 2 litres of milk
  • 1 cup of sugar
  • 2 cups of cake wheat flour
  • 1 cinnamon stick or 1 tsp of ground cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp of butter
  • 1 tsp of salt

Devide.PNG

What do you do?

WhatsApp Image 2022-09-11 at 17.52.47.jpeg

1 - Start by adding your 2 litres of milk into a large pot along with the cinnamon. You can mix the milk and the cinnamon and allow it to heat up.

WhatsApp Image 2022-09-11 at 17.52.48 (1).jpeg

2 - Once the milk is warm (not boiling, just warm), add the butter. Allow the milk mix to boil for a few minutes. Just make sure the pot does not overflow.

WhatsApp Image 2022-09-11 at 17.52.49.jpeg

3 - I mixed my flour, sugar and salt in a separate bowl. This way I have control over how much I add to the milk each time.

WhatsApp Image 2022-09-11 at 17.52.52.jpeg

4 - Start adding the flour mix to the milk. Add the flour in sections, that way you can mix it in properly.

WhatsApp Image 2022-09-11 at 17.52.52 (2).jpeg

5 - Once I've added half of the flour mix, I let it cook for 2 minutes while constantly mixing it. I only do this to avoid any uncooked lumps from forming.

WhatsApp Image 2022-09-11 at 17.52.53 (1).jpeg

6 - When you get to the last bit of the flour mixture, you will need to awaken the dragon inside you. The mixture gets thick quickly and can easily drain all your energy. Or you can just ask someone with bigger biceps for assistance.

WhatsApp Image 2022-09-11 at 17.52.51 (1).jpeg

7 - If you want, you can leave the lumps. I know a few people who prefer it since it's chewy.

WhatsApp Image 2022-09-11 at 17.52.54.jpeg

8 - I on the other hand prefer it smooth like porridge. So I
vigorously mix for a few minutes.

WhatsApp Image 2022-09-11 at 17.52.53.jpeg

9 - Once happy with the consistency, leave the melkkos to cook for around 5-10 minutes. It needs to start bubbling. A running joke between me and my hubby "It's speaking to you". By the time the "melkkos" is speaking to you, you switch off the stove. I like to leave to pot on the warm stove while getting bowls. This way it stays nice and warm.

WhatsApp Image 2022-09-11 at 17.52.51.jpeg

10 - For serving, you can pour a mix of ground cinnamon and sugar over it. It is sweet so be cautious with the amount of sugar you add.

Devide.PNG

If you have never tried "melkkos" before, please feel free to enjoy one of our country's beloved treats. If you have heard about it before, tell us where you're from and how you learned about it. I hope someone will attempt the recipe and enjoy the sweetness with us all the way here in South Africa.

At first I thought it was oatmeal, but then I read better and realized it was wheat flour. Interesting this dish, I would like to try it someday. You said they eat it almost all the time, it's like arepa around here.

I also liked the narrative, very funny 😂, saludos!

Mmm, your "melkkos" looks perfect for a rainy day inside. ⛈️🥣 Definitely belongs in the "comfort food" family!

🤔 I think I would be one who likes the chewy lumps.

Yes! Rainy days and melkkos are best friends 😊. When ever I'm a bit down I want a warm melkkos, it's like having soup when you're sick.

Oh yum, creamy chicken sounds delicious. Tomato is pretty good too, although I've only had it from the can. Homemade chili is what I love on a cold day.

Hmm, now I'm curious how to make a good tomato soup at home! Haha! Have a great day or evening, Miss H.

I'm here in Sunny SA and I've never heard of this! How is that possible. I feel like I've missed out.

How long does it take from start to finish please?

Excluding the eating time which I would do super fast 😁

😱 no really!? You've been missing out. I'd say around 15-20 minutes, depending on how warm your stove gets. I have an extremely old stove that takes it's time to warm up 😂.

Weird, huh? That we humans can circle each other for 51 odd years and miss stuff entirely!

And still learn something new every day!

You're also new around here? And also South African. :)

Have you met @fionasfavourites , @lizelle , @stevemuis , @julianhorack , @itsostylish and there are more... wonderful humans and writers to introduce you to!

Welcome and sorry I missed your entry into Hive!

I think you're gonna like it here!

Hello, @misshugo! I, too, have never eaten melkkos (I am of very British parentage even though I grew up in SA), but The Husband has. Locals around the village rave about it and having read your post, I know I'd enjoy it. So would my already ample thighs, hahahaha!

I just read your intro post: very interesting career path - I wish you well. You and I share at least one major for our undergraduate degrees although yours is much (ha!) more recent than mine...

All the best for your Hive journey and I'm sure I'll see you around!

There was a community (with an account and Discord channel) before that and I think @therneau and @joanstewart as well as an Aus-based Saffa were keyholders and moderators. Life overtook things... Oh, and @braaiboy was also very active with prizes for Saffas...

@zakludick also tagging you here...

Team South Africa was setup by @cheeto.blue I'm aware @therneau tried to obtain the keys to no avail. Not sure if there is another way in obtaining the keys, perhaps go with a new account name would be easiest.

Indeed. So I made these posts here and here where I began rallying all the good people of Hive together, mostly focussed on South Africa but also extending the community friendship beyond.

I do believe that we have enough South Africans to have our very own Community. @jasperdick and quite a few others have asked me to get things started and I have been keeping some of us together on my weekly stats post.

That weekly stats post found here Mobey-Ludick Household HIVE Progress Report #35.2022 🐳 Week 36 started out being all about my family, then included my students and then began adding in all sorts of people. @joanstewart, you are included in there as per @joetunex's suggestion so we can see how people at different levels grow and earn, even on the casual habit.

@fionasfavourites began watching us to see if there were noteworthy people on the PUD to delegate and support.

Many others have been putting their hands up to show support including @braaiboy, @cryptoandcoffee and @papilloncharity, and many more besides. I know @braaiboy would help me set up some sort of support voting structure for the community to help people grow and I know, when so called, many people could delegate to such a worthy cause!

I think I should just bite the bullet and create the community. If not as a place to specifically post into (though you may), then at least a community that South Africans can search for, join and find each other on.

I believe that it should simply be called Hive South Africa and should pop up should some one search "South Africa"

I believe that we should protect the group in the sense that it should have a fairly large amount of admins and that the keys should be obtainable, should someone fall to the wayside. This can only be held by a select few, I would say around five people and should someone "retire" or go AWOL, a replacement should be chosen and the keys be reset.

I am pretty sure that everyone will be happy with that. I shall create another post and tag all those I know and everyone can tag in those that they have discovered and I have failed to include in the initial post.

🇿🇦 For the Hive South Africa Community!

Awesome. I made a big post some time ago and added all the South African Accounts in one place. I have most of those but you know... gotta catch em all...

Yeah it is high time that we get a community going.

For myself - Check out my sunday morning posts. It started out as a family Hive stats post. My wife and I both have accounts, she started this year. I had one from the olden days, 3 years inactive, but I have never grown as fast as I have now! So Awesome!

Then I was challenged to onboard people since I brought a bunch of new people to Hive. I have since onboarded many. And added "allies" and now we are growing and expanding and adding reciprocal growth to each other.

My idea was to keep the Class of 2022 on the list, together with the Hive students of 2023 etc etc and build a massive community. They are currently 100% South African but the allies include others as well we interact with a lot.

So yeah... I was looking for a new name...

Some others mentioned in this post were @fionasfavourites @itsostylish @nickydee although I assume you picked them up already? I will ensure I check out your weekly post and support a selection of South African posts each week. Thank you for pulling the list together :-)

As an aside... and this is not a hard sell lol... I am just sharing the following info about Dreemport with you because I have so much genuine love for the platform and community and just want people to know about it and have the opportunity to be a dreemer. So, I am an ambassador for Dreemport, a platform agnostic curation community, powered by Hive layer 2 Dreem token, where community members can curate and rank 5 randomly assigned articles a day (Monday-Friday) and then earn the right to share their own posts with the community... (you share your URL so we send the traffic directly to your own blog). It gets more eyes on your content and improves engagement on your posts, helps to expand your personal network, and promotes authentic meaningful connections. The top-ranked posts each day earn additional Dreem tokens from the platform. We have a lot of fun at Dreemport with weekly community challenges in collaboration with other Hive communities. Our community members can earn Dreem tokens and cards each day for curating in Dreemport even if they don't have a post to share. Our cards are part of a new Dreemport NFT game called Dreemerge... where you collect cards of different levels, merge them into higher levels until you gain the top-level card. Then you can exchange it for the community reward associated with that card or pay a small sum to have it turned into an NFT which you can then trade with others if you would like to swap earned rewards. It would be wonderful if we had more South Africans join the community. You can check out Dreemport.com - it is quick and easy to register if you are interested. There are a few of us South Africans in there already 😊 Tag me if you'd like to a link to an article by our community founder @dreemsteem that explains all about Dreemport

Absolutely, we accept all types of posts provided they are PG13, free of plagiarism and all images are sourced with URL links to where they are found in the royalty-free site that has been used. The emphasis is on writing so the post must be able to stand alone without images or audio-visual content. Would love to see you there! And yes, from our recent collaboration with Ecency, we picked up a few Ecencials who have also now become Dreemers... I pop into the Ecency discord from time to time myself although I spend most of my time in Dreemport. I enjoy writing short story fiction, poetry, and discursive essays too 😊. Any questions, feel free to ask... I am happy to support anyone into Dreemport... and as with any community, you need to see if it is a good fit for you... our numbers are growing... as people generally enjoy the ethos, the community, the engagement, support, and the sense of family.
