Servingware tends to hold its value; so I am inclined to having enough dishes for a relatively large party.
BTW: I live in a household established in the 1950s. So I live among numerous dishes.
When I was in school, I was moving frequently. When I was moving frequently, I essentially had a single bowl and a spoon. I attended parties where people were expected to bring their own bowl and spoon.
Now as for liquor. I think it is a good idea to keep some WINE on hand.
