Will Conclave Arcana Be A Fresh Start For Splinterlands? | Splinterlands #406
2025 is only a few weeks away and with the onset of the new year, the splinterlands team will be releasing the new Conclave Arcana set sometime in 2025. This new set has made many promises and potentially avoids the mistakes of Chaos Legion -- a set that left many players, including me, frustrated and broke. Here is my opinion on the new set and what it could mean for splinterlands.
Chaos Legion Disaster
Chaos Legion was released during the 2021 NFT crypto bull run mania when thousands of players were streaming into splinterlands. At the time, splinterlands was tussling it out with Aliens Worlds, while Axie Infinity made headlines by creating new jobs for third-world countries. Over fifteen million packs were printed, creating a massive surplus on the market, and severely impacting the price of the Chaos Legion cards.
Many players, me included, went deep into Chaos Legion and at the time, I thought running a 1k Chaos Legion pack opening challenge was a good idea. It was not. The sheer oversupply of Chaos Legion cards left the Chaos Legion set cards a fraction of their original cost. Chaos Legion packs have never recovered. The current price for a Chaos Legion pack is selling on hive-engine for $0.30, which is far away from its original $4 price.
The disaster from Chaos Legion was a wake-up call. To be fair, the splinterlands team did learn from the Chaos Legion set and reduced the printing run for the Rebellion set. Now, with Conclave Arcana approaching, we are hopeful that the lessons of the past will guide this release to a more sustainable economy.
Conclave Arcana Pack Structure
The new set hopes to provide entry points for the man on the street and the whales. In the proposal, the splinterlands team listed three new types of packs:
- Standard Packs -- will cost 4000 DEC or credits ($4), this pack is the one we are all familiar with.
- Legendary Packs -- will cost 24000 DEC or credits ($24) and will guarantee at least one Legendary card.
- Alchemist Packs -- will cost 12000 DEC or credits ($12) and will guarantee at least one Gold Foil card.
- Starter Packs -- will cost 5000 DEC or credits ($5) and will only contain common and rare cards. This new pack is aimed at new players to splinterlands, which will contain twenty-five cards. Specifically aimed at newer players, these packs contain twenty-five cards (commons and rares only) for 5,000 DEC or credits.
Conclave Arcana will have a total cap of 6.5m packs spread across Standard (booster packs), Alchemist and Legendary packs. There will be no limit applied to the starter packs, but with the focus on low-rarity cards to support new players, its only intention is to support new players without destroying the market. If the game does grow, Conclave Arcana commons and rares should be cheaply accessible for new players without them having to take out home loans.
Chaos Legion Consequences
When Conclave Arcana releases, Chaos Legion will transition to Wild. My alt, built around Chaos Legion, will now require a Wild pass. I need to do more thinking, but this may be the end of the road for my alt account. I am not a whale and therefore paying for 3 Wild passes every 2 weeks is not sustainable for me.
Nonetheless, splinterlands success needs to rely on growing its player base. If the player base does not grow, then sustaining the game's economy will become increasingly difficult. If splinterlands is adopting a release cadence like traditional TCGs like Magic: The Gathering where frequent card releases drive engagement and spending, then the player base must grow significantly in 2025 for this to work. The planned marketing push, funded by the DAO, is crucial to bringing in new players and ensuring the game's sustainability.
Concluding Thoughts
As we enter 2025, I am hopeful that Conclave Arcana will continue to build upon the positives from Rebellion and learn from the missteps of Chaos Legion. Will this edition be the start of a new era for splinterlands? Time will tell.
