Het wordt gevierd op 31 oktober en is een feest van dood en duisternis.
Kinderen verkleden zich als spoken, heksen en andere griezelige figuren en gaan langs de deuren om snoep te verzamelen.
Ook worden steeds meer huizen griezelig versierd.
Hoe het wordt gevierd kan per stad of dorp verschillen.
Ik zal je vertellen hoe het in mijn dorp gebeurt.
's Avonds lopen kinderen dan met lampions door de straten, verzamelen zich rond een groot vreugdevuur en krijgen chocolademelk en wafels.
Sommigen gaan ook van deur tot deur en vragen om snoep.
Halloween wordt de laatste jaren steeds populairder.
Terwijl Sint-Maarten aan populariteit verliest.
Eén reden is dat Halloween een internationaal feest is dat in veel landen wordt gevierd.
Sint Maarten is een traditioneel Nederlands feest, dat niet in alle landen wordt gevierd.
Een andere reden is dat Halloween een feest is dat zich goed leent voor marketing.
Er worden veel producten en diensten verkocht rond Halloween, zoals verkleedkleren, snoep en versieringen.
Dit helpt om Halloween nog populairder te maken.
Het is een feest dat draait om traditie en religie.
In een wereld die steeds meer geseculariseerd wordt, is dit voor veel mensen minder aantrekkelijk.
Ik weet niet of Halloween uiteindelijk Sint-Maarten volledig zal verdringen.
Maar het is duidelijk dat Halloween een steeds grotere rol speelt in de Nederlandse samenleving.

Some also from door to door asking for candy.
Popularity is shifting I noticed.
Halloween is becoming increasingly popular the last few years.
While St. Martin's is losing popularity.
I think there are several reasons that could explain this shift.
One reason is that Halloween is an international party celebrated in many countries.
Sint Maarten is a more traditional Dutch celebration, which is not celebrated in all countries.
Another reason is that Halloween is a celebration that lends itself well to marketing.
There are many products and services sold around Halloween, such as costume clothes, candy and decorations.
This helps to make Halloween even more popular.
St. Martin's is a celebration that is less in tune with the current zeitgeist.
It is a celebration that revolves around tradition and religion.
In a world that is becoming increasingly secularized, this is less appealing to many people.
I don't know if Halloween will eventually supplant St. Martin's completely.
But it is clear that Halloween is playing an increasing role in Dutch society.
