"Delftsblauw: niet alleen voor je oma"

Als je aan Nederland denkt, dan zijn de eerste dingen waaraan je denkt misschien wel tulpen, molens en klompen.

Maar heb je ook al eens gedacht aan Delfts blauw?

Want ook daar staat ons kleine landje bekend om.

Laat me je hier iets meer over vertellen want kort geleden heb ik een heel interessante locatie bezocht die ik graag met je wil delen.

De laatste fabriek van de Delfts blauw fabrikant “Royal Delft”,
“De Porceleyne Fles”.

Zullen we eerst met een stukje geschiedenis beginnen over het Delfts Blauw?

In 1653 werd Royal Delft opgericht door David Thonisz van der Piet.

Hij zag dat het aardewerk met witte achtergrond en blauwe decoraties uit Azië erg populair was en bedacht dat hij dit ook zelf kon produceren.

Hij bedacht zijn eigen typische opdruk en begon onder andere borden, vazen, schalen en serviesgoed te verkopen.

Natuurlijk heeft de fabriek zijn hoogte en dieptepunten gehad.

In de 19e eeuw waren ze gedwongen om over te gaan op goedkoper aardewerk en een gedrukte afbeelding vanwege de grote concurrentie van buitenlandse fabrieken.

Maar Royal Delft krabbelde weer omhoog naar kwalitatief hoogstaand aardewerk toen in 1876 ingenieur Joost Thooft de fabriek kocht.

Natuurlijk zijn er meerdere producenten van Delfts Blauw maar Royal Delft is tegenwoordig een van de belangrijkste en draagt ook het koninklijk zegel dat hun is toegekend in 1919.

Naast een fabriek is het ook een museum, waar ik je natuurlijk ook enkele mooie foto’s van kan tonen.

Dus ga gezellig met mij mee, dan leid ik je rond.

Als je door het museum loopt wordt je van begin tot heden de gehele ontwikkeling getoond van het Delfts Blauw, ik zal jullie degene laten zien die ik het meest interessant vond.

Anders wordt dit wel een hele lange post als ik alles moet laten zien.

Ook onze koningen en koninginnen zijn vereerd met een prachtig Delfts blauw bord met hun gelijkenis erop afgebeeld.

Maar het meest indrukwekkende was een replica van "De Nachtwacht" van Rembrandt van Rijn.

Natuurlijk niet zo groot als het echte schilderwerk maar prachtig vervaardigd.

Het bestaat uit kleine delfts blauwe tegeltjes die samen een geheel vormen.

Daar moest ik natuurlijk een selfie mee maken.

Zo krijg je ook een indruk hoe groot dit kunstwerk is.

Het volgende wat ik ook prachtig vond was deze tulpenvaas.

Hij bestaat uit verschillende onderdelen die op elkaar gestapeld kunnen worden.

En samen vormt hij dan een prachtige bloementoren.

Prachtig dat ze nu voor andere bloemen hebben gekozen i.p.v. de tulpen die er eigenlijk in horen.

Dit is een kleine greep uit het museum.

Maar laten we doorgaan naar de fabriek.

Hierboven zie je de 4 fases die een product doorloopt.
(van bijvoorbeeld een vaas.)

1. De vaas komt uit de mal
2. Alle oneffenheden worden handmatig weggewerkt
3. De vaas wordt beschilderd
4. En na het bakproces komt de vaas met zijn kenmerkende blauwe kleur uit de oven.

Hier is de start van elk product.

Dit is de gieterij, op deze afdeling van de fabriek wordt de klei in de mal gegoten.

Daarna gaan ze door naar het volgende station waar alle oneffenheden handmatig verwijderd worden.

De vaas (of ander product) wordt op een draaitafel gezet en met een natte spons wordt het verder bewerkt.

Dit is fase 2.

Daarna wordt de vaas in dit geval neergezet om te drogen voordat die verder kan gaan naar fase 3: Het beschilderen.

Met grote precisie en vaste hand worden hier patronen op geschilderd.

Dit intensief handwerk verklaart natuurlijk ook de hoge prijs van elk product van Delfts blauw.

Maar hierover vertel ik op het eind nog iets.

Want van sommige prijzen zul je achterover vallen.

En de laatste fase, nummer 4, is de oven.

Daar veranderd de zwarte verf in een mooie donkere blauwe kleur.

En heb je een prachtig eindproduct waar ze trots op mogen zijn.

Tijdens mijn museumtour was er ook een kleine expositie van de wereldberoemde kunstenaar Picasso.

Want naast zijn schilderijen heeft hij nog menig ander kunstwerk gemaakt.
Ook heeft hij zich laten inspireren door Delfts blauw.

Hieronder zie je enkele van zijn werken die tentoongesteld werden.

En de laatste stop was natuurlijk de winkel.

Hoewel ik bang ben dat mijn budget niet toereikend is voor mijn wensen.

Ik zal je een paar voorbeelden geven waar je jouw zuur verdiend geld aan kunt uitgeven.

Een van de goedkoopste dingen, daar zal ik maar mee beginnen.

Dat zijn deze mooie kerstballen, ter grote van een tennisbal.

Mooi zijn ze zeker maar zullen nooit in mijn kerstboom komen te hangen.

Als je €117 betaalt ben je de trotse eigenaar van 1 kerstbal.

Je zult nu vast begrijpen dat hoe groter het artikel, hoe hoger de prijs.

Ook deze prachtige pul aan de rechterkant met deksel zou bij mij nooit uit de kast komen.

Bang dat hij stuk zou vallen want €4083 is een hoop geld voor mij.

Delfts blauw is ook gaan samenwerken met een Nederlandse tattoo artiest.

Henk Schiffmacher is verantwoordelijk voor het ontwerp van deze stoere borden.

Het hoekig bord waarop een ridder en draak afgebeeld staan is te koop voor € 5635.

Maar als laatste heb ik het pronkstuk van de collectie bewaard.

Ikzelf vind het prachtig en zou hem graag bij me thuis willen hebben staan.

Deze prachtige appel mag het duurste prijskaartje dragen van € 45900.

Over de prijzen kun je natuurlijk discussiëren of dit reëel is.

Maar je moet niet uit het oog verliezen dat dit allemaal handwerk is en dat er ontzettend veel uren in gaan zitten voordat een echt Delfts blauw kunstwerk af is.

Dus mocht je nog een paar duizend euro ergens hebben rondslingeren en je weet niet waar je dit in kunt investeren dan is Delfts blauw misschien een optie voor jou.

Voor mij in ieder geval niet.😂

Ik mag er alleen van dromen en naar kijken.

Maar daar neem ik genoegen mee.

"Delftware: not just for your grandmother"

When you think of Holland, the first things you might think of are tulips, windmills and clogs.

But have you also thought about Delftware?

Because our little country is famous for that too.

Let me tell you a little more about this because recently I visited a very interesting location that I would like to share with you.

The last factory of the Delft blue manufacturer "Royal Delft",

Let's start with a little history about the Delft Blue, shall we?

In 1653, Royal Delft was founded by David Thonisz van der Piet.

He saw that the pottery with white background and blue decorations from Asia was very popular and thought he could produce it himself.

He came up with his own typical print and began selling plates, vases, bowls and dinnerware, among other things.

Of course, the factory had its highs and lows.

In the 19th century, they were forced to switch to cheaper pottery and a printed image because of stiff competition from foreign factories.

But Royal Delft scaled back up to high-quality pottery when in 1876 engineer Joost Thooft bought the factory.

Of course there are several producers of Delft Blue but Royal Delft is one of the most important today and also carries the royal seal awarded to them in 1919.

Besides being a factory, it is also a museum.

When you walk through the museum you will be shown the whole development of Delft Blue from the beginning until today.

I will show you the ones I found most interesting.

Otherwise this will be a very long post if I have to show everything.

Our kings and queens were also honored with a beautiful Delft Blue plate with their likeness depicted on it.

But most impressive was a replica of "The Night Watch" by Rembrandt van Rijn.

Of course not as large as the real painting but beautifully crafted.

It consists of small delft blue tiles that together form a whole.

Of course I had to take a selfie with that.

So you also get an impression of how big this work of art is.

The next thing I also loved was this tulip vase.

It consists of several parts that can be stacked on top of each other.

And together it then forms a beautiful flower tower.

Wonderful that they have now chosen other flowers instead of the tulips that actually belong in it.

This is a small sample of the museum.

But let's move on to the factory.

Above you can see the 4 stages a product goes through.
(For example, a vase.)

1. The vase comes out of the mold
2. All irregularities are manually removed
3. The vase is painted
4. And after the baking process, the vase comes out of the oven with its distinctive blue color.

Here is the start of each product.

This is the foundry, in this department of the factory the clay is poured into the mold.

Then they move on to the next station where all imperfections are manually removed.

The vase (or other product) is placed on a turntable and a wet sponge is used to further process it.

This is phase 2.

Then the vase, in this case, is set down to dry before it can move on to phase 3: Painting.

With great precision and a steady hand, patterns are painted on these.

This intensive handwork, of course, also explains the high price of each Delftware product.

But I will tell you more about this at the end.

Because some of the prices will shock you.

And the final stage, number 4, is the kiln.

There the black paint turns into a beautiful dark blue color.

And you have a beautiful final product that they can be proud of.

During my museum tour, there was also a small exhibit of the world-famous artist Picasso.

He is well known for his paintings.

But did you know he also created some beautiful ceramic art?

He was inspired by Delftware.

And the last stop was of course the store.

Although I'm afraid with my budget shopping will be a very short experience.

What to buy and spend your hard earned money on you're wondering?

Let's start easy with one of the cheapest things.

That's these pretty baubles, the size of a tennis ball.

Beautiful they certainly are but will never be hanging in my Christmas tree.

If you pay €117 you are the proud owner of 1 bauble.

You'll probably understand by now that the bigger the item, the higher the price.

Also this beautiful pul on the right with lid would never leave my closet.

Afraid it would fall to the ground because €4083 is a lot of money to me.

But finally I kept the showpiece of the collection.

I myself love it and would love to have it in my home.

This beautiful apple may carry the most expensive price tag of € 45900.

Of course you can discuss about the prices whether this is realistic.

But you should not lose sight of the fact that this is all handicraft and that a lot of hours go into it before a true Delft blue work of art is finished.

So if you have a few thousand euros lying around somewhere and you don't know where to invest it, maybe delftware is an option for you.

At least not for me.😂

I can only dream of it and look at it.

But I'll settle for that.
