Heading to Rural Area
Today, I’m heading to a secondary school in the rural area of Sabah, about 80 kilometers from my house. Around 34 kilometers of the road isn’t paved. I’m going with a few other teachers to supervise the SPM practical exams for four days. We’re traveling today, and our duty starts tomorrow until Thursday. I’m not sure if there will be phone signal at the place we’re staying. Hopefully, there’s at least some signal at the school.
I packed and got everything ready last night. The place isn’t new to me, actually. I worked at that school about 7 years ago. Back then, the road to the school was really bad, full of big river stones. Driving those 34 kilometers used to take over two hours if you drove slowly. Better to be slow and safe. At the end of the year, the road would get slippery because of the rain. But that was 7 years ago, I haven’t been there since, so I’m not sure how the road is now. According to friends who still work there, the road has improved a lot, and there aren’t as many big rocks anymore. I am going to found out it soon, today.
Our chief examiner also got some supplies ready. He bought lamb and chicken wings, planning for us to have a barbecue tonight before we start work tomorrow. We’re also bringing fishing gear since our accommodation is near a river. So, in the evening, we’re planning to take the chance to do some fishing.
