UFO TART (COW DUNG TART) RECIPE
Although most people might find this tart weird, it is one of the most well-known and recognizable dessert in Sandakan, my lovely hometown.
The "UFO Tart", also known as the "Cow Dung Tart", was created while Malaysia (and Borneo) was still ruled by the British.
For some people, including me who was born and reared in Sandakan, Sabah, the UFO tart evokes recollections of their youth.
The locals have told me that this is where this tart was initially created.
UFO Tart was just the result of an accident that occurred more than 60 years ago. According to what I've read and heard, a Chinese cake baker named Fu Ah On was making tarts one day in 1955. He overbaked his tarts while he was mingling. Surprisingly, the burnt tarts had a decent flavor. Then he launched this unique tart, which was well received by the public and is still only available in Sandakan.
Each UFO tart costs approximately RM2.50 (USD0.54).
It is not cheap because it requires several arduous processes to make this dessert. Because the original recipe for UFO Tart has been forgotten, each baker has their own method to imitate the original flavors, hence the tastes will be variable. Here I will share you the recipe for this tart.
UFO TART RECIPE
(I'll separate it into 5 steps of ingredients)
Ingredients:
[STEP 1]
Butter
Castor Sugar
[STEP 2]
Eggs
[STEP 3]
All Purposed Flour
Self-Raising Flour
Salt
To prepare the Butter Cake. The materials were thoroughly mixed in the first step. Add the eggs (second ingredient; step). Add the ingredients from step three and combine. Bake the mixture for 10 to 15 minutes after placing it in a Mould.
"The Butter Cake"
[STEP 4] making the custard
Egg Yolks
Evaporated Milk
Castor Sugar
Condense Milk
Custard Powder
Butter
Step 4 ingredients should be cooked slowly on a low heat. Put in the butter and mix well until it thickens.
The Custard
[STEP 5] making the meringue
Egg White
Cream Of Tartar
Castor Sugar
Beat it well (the step 5 ingredients) until it fluffy.
On top of the cake, pipe meringue, and in the center, pipe custard. However, I forgot to snap pictures of my mother's homemade meringue or the way she piped it onto the cake. Alternatively, I can make it viewable to everyone here.
So, here is the UFO Tart that my mother made at home. It is tasty, I have to admit. Although the tart appears plain and has an odd name, there are actually quite a few steps involved in baking it. I'll leave you all with this delicious UFO Tart and wish you all a wonderful day.
Thanks for sharing the recipe for this yummy dessert! Reading this short history, maybe I can do them too... If I have to leave them to burn, I know that! 😂
I have picked this post on behalf of the @OurPick project which will be highlighted in the next post!

What an interesting story behind this typical dessert. I was struck by the peculiar name, Cow Dung Tart and/or UFO Tart. I guess it is due to the shape of it. I particularly prefer to call it UFO Tart hahaha.
I will try someday to make it with your mommy's recipe, as I am somewhat far from Sandakan. According to the recipe it must be very tasty! Thanks for sharing. ☺️
Yes, the name is a little strange because the shape of the custard on top resembles cow dung or an UFO.
But as they said, do not judge from the outside because it is really good. 😜
I hope you try it @sarybeth , and create your own recipe, just like how the baker messed up the tart and made an amazing discovery.
Have a lovely day. ❤️
