ASEAN HIVE COMMUNITY CHALLENGE #24 - LOCAL PROVERBS/FOLK SAYINGS

avatar
Authored by @Mell79

As a Malaysian, I am very proud to have a multiracial and multiethnic family. Although I was born in Sabah, my ancestors are thought to have come from Sarawak.

Sino-Melanau from my mother's side and Iban @ Sea Dayak from my father's. Despite the fact that I was born in Sabah, it may be said that I have a higher proportion of Sarawakian blood.

But the fact that I am illiterate in my native tongue is a great loss for me. There is a proverb that we Iban @ Sea Dayak are particularly proud of, perhaps because it is frequently cited by the heroes of the headhunters.

AGI IDUP, AGI NGELABAN

With that proverb, it makes me proud to have such a hero as "Rentap". Rentap, is the supreme Iban warrior of Sarawak. I have my respect towards him and all the Sarawakian unsung heroes who gave their life to protect their people's rights from colonizers.

The title 'Rentap' was earned after beheading his first enemy. His words, 'Agi Idup, Agi Ngelaban,' which means 'As long as I live, as long as I fight,' are still chanted even today even though Rentap is gone. And last, I hold that proverb as my daily reminder, too never quit and keep on thriving.

I'm an IBAN just on my birth certificate, but I was born in Sabah and did not grow up speaking IBAN.
I do regret that I didn't learn it with my aunts.
But I only can speak "Melayu Sarawak.
But not as fluently as before because I hardly see my other Sarawakians.

Thanks for joining, nice to know a little background about this classic proverb. I couldn't find any English translation in the post, would you mind to roughly translate it to English for me? That would be helpful to non-Malaysian readers.

Friendly tip too - ASEAN Community rules require posts published within to maintain a 250+ post body word count. It increases the chance of curation beyond our little Hive nook, and also maintains community value.

Regarding the 250+ body post, I'm sorry. The rules absolutely escaped my mind. I'm very certain that post was written while I was still sleepy. I apologize.😓😓😓

Yes. I guess @coloringiship can confirm it. 😊
As an Iban @ Dayak, I am proud of my ancestor.

Absolutely. Our people never backed down from challenges. Do you know that Ibans are well-known warriors in the armed forces and always among the first line of defense? Lahad Datu Tonduo standoff 2013 is one case in point.

You are right @coloringiship. My late one was a PGA who was transferred following the Tanduo Case, and we are all familiar with the stories. He even created Tattoo Bunga Terung (Tribal Tattoo) on my behalf because of this. He proud that I am an Iban, he said. Unfortunately, he had pass away in a tragic accident in Tawau. 😞😞😞

Oh dear...I am so sorry for your loss. I have uncles who served in the Sarawak Rangers (as Dayak trackers) and had been involved in combat during the Malayan Emergency and Communist Insurgency, respectively. Our tribal tattoos mean so much to us.
