Of the Earth

The Morton arboretum in Lisle, Illinois USA was established in 1922, by Joy Morton, founder of the Morton Salt Company. His father, Julius Sterling Morton, had founded Arbor Day.

Morton Arboretum is not an easy place to get to using public transportation from the northern part of Chicago but was worth the effort to see an art exhibition called 'Of The Earth' . The show consists of five large scale creations by Polish American artist Olga Ziemska.

I want to show this one first, entitled Strata.

The artist used reclaimed materials from the Arboretum’s 1,700 acres to create her works.

The arboretum is the ideal place to show this sculpture of the human body emerging from the earth and to remind us of our connection to nature.

Strata is 8ft. tall and 45ft. long and is made with river rocks encased in wire mesh.

I have more photos of some of the other sculptures and features of the arboretum, but will save them for future posts. It's a pretty incredible place!

What a super cool place!!! And I love salt too, not that it’s really entirely relevant 🤣

Ah yes we go here all the time. My favorite was when they had the wooden troll sculptures out.

This sculpture in the arboretum resonates with feminist energy, and I find it truly inspiring! Its flawless design and captivating presence brighten my day. I'm enthralled by its beauty and hope to see more works of art like this in the future.

Quote from the artist

"Humans have a complex relationship with the natural world, but there is no separation between people and nature. Everything on Earth is of the Earth."
