Happy Lunar New Year: Year Of The Snake
Happy Lunar New Year: Year Of The Snake
Goood day Lion's I trust you're safe and well and enjoying the commencement of 2025 with a lot of major changes already emerging with the inauguration of President Trump and the launch of DeepSeek which just caused ChatGPT the Artificial Intelligence (AI) bot to lose it's job to itself. Based on cost and the ability to perform DeepSeek appears to be a rising challenger for the industry.
But today, we're putting a hold on reporting on the news to wish all those celebrating the Lunar new year a happy new year. the beginning of a new zodiac cycle with grand celebrations worldwide. This year, the festival welcomed the Year of the Snake, a sign known for wisdom, intuition, and transformation. This year we headed down to the Sunshine Festival to celebrate the event.
What Is Year Of The Snake
The Chinese zodiac follows a twelve year cycle with each year associated with an animal sign. 2025 is the Year of the Snake and it is a symbol of intelligence, elegance and strategy. Those born under this sign are believed to be deep thinkers, analytical and highly intuitive. The snake is often associated with transformation and renewal and makes this year an excellent time for personal growth and strategic decision making with all the recent global deveopments.
Many believe that the Year of the Snake encourages people to embrace change and trust their instincts and is a theme that is more important than ever as we step into the new year.
Sunshine Festival
As we arrived at the Sunshine Festival the local streets were alive with traditional red and gold decorations which do symbolise prosperity and good fortune. The rhythmic beats of lion dancers filled the air as we stepped into the festival grounds and performers dressed in elaborate costumes skilfully mimicking the movements of a real lion. My kids were excited by the energetic drumming and acrobatics by the dancers as we moved through the crowd.
The festival featured an array of cultural performances from Chinese fan dances to martial arts demonstrations. The atmosphere was amazing as families gathered to celebrate the Lunar New Year.
Games and Fun
The festival wasn't just about food and performances with many games and activities. My kids eagerly participated in a lucky draw and many other carnival games and rides where they each won small prizes. Including a red envelope filled with chocolate coins a symbol of good fortune.
The joy on their faces was priceless as they showed off their winnings.
They tried their luck at carnival style games where they attempted to throw darts at bollons and pop them for a prize. I was surprised on how well they did and they both secured prizes!.
My son won himself a Knuckle's key ring, he has been right into sonic shows and movies lately, I did get the old school game for him but he found it boring in comparison to the games that are available today. It's a funny thing, tech that we grew up with and were excited to play as kids when given to a 4 year old now, doesn't quite cut the mustard.
There were many rides that were amazing with giant drops, rocking ships, giant swings and more.
Traditional Foods and Flavour
No Lunar New Year celebration is complete without indulging in traditional foods and the festival offered an impressive variety. The aroma of sizzling street food filled the air and we couldn't resist trying some classics like dumplings. (did you know dumplings symbolise wealth? I didn't know that until then) and spring rolls represent prosperity.
My kids loved the crispy, golden fried sesame balls a sweet treat filled with red bean paste and they enthusiastically slurped down bubble tea in vibrant flavours.
One of the highlights was watching the preparation of hand pulled noodles a process that symbolizes longevity. It is amazing how much food and culture are combined. We learned alot.
Lantern Display's and Fireworks
As the sun began to set the festival grounds transformed into a glowing wonderland with lantern displays showcasing intricate designs of dragons, snakes and cherry blossoms. The golden glow illuminated the faces of spectators adding a magical touch to the evening.
The grand finale was a breathtaking fireworks display lighting up the night sky with an array of colors. My kids watched in awe as bursts of red, gold and blue exploded overhead marking the beginning of a prosperous new year.
