Home Gardening and Urban Farming : Harvesting Maize crop and experimenting

I never knew i will be going back to farming even after i thought i was studying engineering, not knowing the final year of my study is going to make me go into the aspect of farming again. When i was about starting my project, my supervisor said we will have to carry out an experiment on maize crop and that means we are going to plant and so some litlle farming because we are not buying the seed just only the ones we have grown so as to be able to do some comaprism after the harvest and check the yield of the crop.

Yield of crop at harvest

Trying to take a good care of what i decided to plant as an act of farming and this made to be very conversant with the things to do, It all started with preparation of the land and also when i wanted to get the dry seed to plant, i was unable to get it on time and i had to buy it at a costly price then after the land preparation which is a must for every farmer to do, taking care of the land to avoid competition between the crops and weed. I used some manual way to clear the land and then burning off the bush so planting can begin.

Planting of the maize crop have some special way in other to make the growing effective and this is known as the spacing and it is usually 50cm by 25cm so as to allow movement within the plant during weeding. It was just a week after planting and it has started sprouting and the plant growth has started, which literally means i will have to be going to the farm often even though i dont want to but there is no choice because the plant are still young and it will be easy for the weed to over shadow them so to avoid that, proper weeding is needed.

I did that weekly ans i do go to the farm everytime to check on the crops that have been grown and this is because there was application of fertilizers on the land and it will increase the growth of the crop and also unwanted plant there so leaving it for too long is not going to make a lot of sense. After 14 weeks of planting, it was time for harvesting even though not all have same growth and it is normal in farming.

I had harvested and eat some and left the rest to dry oup and use it for experiment later on, it was nice doing some farming and also gardening. All thanks to the project given to me by my supervisor and now i am geting the urge to do more gardening in my home where i stay.

We really enjoyed reading about every step you took, from getting the land ready to looking after the corn. Reaping the harvest after 14 weeks must have felt so satisfying. We hope your project supervisor was impressed.

He was really impressed due to the fact that it yielded well and we have not practiced farming for a long time which makes this one look like the first for us. Thanks for the support as comment
