A Rainy Start to Our Venetian Adventure - Family Travel in Italy
Hello dear friends. I’m starting a new blog series. This summer we had a two-week vacation in Italy with the kids. I’d like to share about this trip in my posts. Our journey began early in the morning. We woke up around 3:30 am and left at 4:30 am. We had another plan initially, but when the weather forecast showed rain, we decided to change our route and start our trip from Venice. This is our fourth visit to Venice. Those who have been here before know that walking around Venice is an endless joy. However, the rain was so heavy on the way that it was almost impossible to see the roads. Fortunately, after a while, the rain lightened, but the roads were still slippery. We entered Italy and the weather couldn't decide. Huge clouds would appear and then the rain would start again.
We parked our car in a town just outside Venice. We always use the same parking lot here; the daily fee is 6.50 euros. We also buy bus tickets from there, which cost 3 euros per person for a one-way trip. Kids under 6 are free. Buses run frequently and you can reach Venice in about 10 minutes.
We arrived in Venice and got the kids ready. Our daughters wanted to go everywhere like little explorers. The temperature was 30 degrees, a bit cloudy, but generally warm. Rain was expected later, so we decided to stroll around for a bit and then head to the hotel.
Venice is built on 118 islands and connected by 400 bridges. I repeat this fact every time we visit, but it’s impressive. The narrow streets, old buildings and canals create a magical atmosphere. We kept stopping to take photos because every corner looks like a postcard.
We came in the summer again and every time I think, I wish we had come in the fall. It seems like Venice would be even more enjoyable in the fall. Maybe next time... The weather was hot that day, but there was a light breeze, which made it a bit more bearable.
While walking through the narrow streets of Venice, we also bought some souvenirs. We bought a fan for our older daughter because she had broken her old one. Every corner of Venice offers a different kind of beauty: small courtyards, old buildings and quiet canals. It’s no surprise that the locals constantly encounter tourists here. I imagine the locals have gotten used to this situation.
Finally we reached Piazza San Marco. We had planned to visit the cathedral here. Our daughter was asleep, so we took the opportunity to take more photos. Venice is always impressive and every time we visit, we discover new beauty. This trip was filled with unforgettable memories. 😊
It was very hot and stifling outside. My younger daughter was getting cranky because she wanted to sleep. There was a line to climb to the top of the cathedral. But of course, we didn’t go up. That’s how it is with kids.
We walked around for about three hours. At first, everything was very enjoyable, until my younger daughter started throwing tantrums. First my husband carried her, then we switched roles.
Then suddenly, it started raining. There was oppressive heat at first and then heavy rain followed. We kept exploring, though. Our daughter was exhausted, crying constantly. I told my husband, Just be patient, she’ll stop crying, but he couldn’t take it anymore. He was worried because people were staring at us. In the end, despite these little challenges, Venice was as beautiful as always, but I think it’s better to visit in the fall and without kids or with kids who can walk and don’t need to be carried. 😆
We then returned to the car and went to our hotel. The hotel was in a small town and we stayed there for the night. The next day, we planned to go to the beach, but we couldn’t decide because another large cloud seemed to be coming. The forecast predicted rain for the first three days, but we tried not to let it spoil our mood.
I slept a little on the way. My daughter also slept. Poor thing was so tired. She hardly slept all day, only napped for about 30 minutes in her father’s arms. Before we arrived at the hotel, we stopped by a store. I bought a hair straightener because I had forgotten mine at home. I had straightened my hair in the morning and it hadn’t been ruined by the rain, so I wanted to buy another one. We also went to Aldi, where my husband bought salad and we got raspberries for the kids. Then we arrived at the hotel and checked into our rooms.
We booked two rooms because we thought someone else would be joining us at first. We paid extra, but there was nothing we could do. The rooms were quite standard. One had a double bed and the other had a single bed. We went down to the hotel restaurant for dinner. Everyone goes out for dinner here, so my husband made a reservation.
We enjoyed the taste of Italian cuisine at the restaurant. My husband had meat and potatoes and there was salad and chicken for our daughter. I had a few glasses of prosecco and I started feeling very sleepy.
The kids were also tired, so it was time for bed. I plan to share the next part of our trip in a new post. I’ll finish today’s post here. Thank you so much for reading and I’m grateful for your support. See you in the next post. Take care, ciao.
