Hello community Architecture+Design from the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela I bring you a cordial greeting loaded with blessings, positive energy and lots of light. In addition, I bring to you a Catholic temple located in the city of Caracas, it is the Iglesia Nuestra Señora de Altagracia.

Hola comunidad Architecture+Design desde la República Bolivariana de Venezuela les traigo un saludo cordial cargado de bendiciones, energía positiva y mucha luz. Además, traigo para ustedes un templo católico ubicado en la ciudad de Caracas, se trata de la Iglesia Nuestra Señora de Altagracia.

The Church of Our Lady of Altagracia was the fifth Church built in Caracas, in the seventeenth century, specifically in 1668, this Catholic temple is neoclassical and rococo in style, with some Renaissance elements. As a curious fact Inside the church of Altagracia there is one of the existing Cavaille-Coll organs in the country, the others are in the churches, San Francisco, Nuestra Señora de La Encarnación de El Valle, San José, Santa Teresa and in the cathedral of Los Teques. These unique musical instruments are named after the French manufacturer Aristide Cavaille-Coll.

La Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Altagracia fue la quinta Iglesia construida en Caracas, en el siglo XVII, especificamente en 1668, este templo católico es de estilo neoclásico y rococó, con algunos elementos renacentistas. Como dato curioso Dentro de la iglesia de Altagracia se encuentra uno de los órganos Cavaille-Coll existentes en el país, los otros están en las iglesias, San Francisco, Nuestra Señora de La Encarnación de El Valle, San José, Santa Teresa y en la catedral de Los Teques. Estos instrumentos musicales únicos deben su nombre al fabricante francés Aristide Cavaille-Coll.

Like most of the old temples in Caracas, this Church was also hit by the earthquakes that have shaken the country since past centuries. The earthquake of 1812 was so strong that it almost completely destroyed this temple, so after that great telluric movement partial reconstruction work began, not only of the Church of Our Lady of Altagracias, but of a large part of the Caracas city. It was exactly in the year 1857 when it proceeded to its total reconstruction, the current façade dates from that time.

Como la mayoría de los antiguos templos de Caracas, esta Iglesia también fue azotado por los terremotos que sacudieron al país desde siglos pasados. El terremoto de 1812 fue tan fuerte que destruyó casi en su totalidad este templo, por lo que después de ese gran movimiento telúrico se iniciaron las labores parciales de reconstrucción, no solo de la Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Altagracias, sino de gran parte de la ciudad de Caracas. Fue exactamente en el año 1857 cuando se procedió a su reconstrucción total, la fachada actual data de esa época.

In the architectural research that I did, I found that the Church of Our Lady of Altagracia reinterprets neoclassical and neo-Gothic elements and during the visit that I made, in the company of my beloved wife, last Sunday, March 20, 2022, I was able to observe that the Church maintains the doors main closed and only entered through a side door. The Church has three main entrances crowned by large windows, as you can see in the photograph on the cover and the two photographs that close this publication. By the way, the most relevant aspect of its ornamentation are the cornices, topped by three arched pediments that stand out, as well as the door and window openings that attract the gaze of all those who have the good fortune to pass near the place.

En la investigación arquitectónica que hice encontré que la Iglesia nuestra Señora de Altagracia reinterpreta elementos neoclásicos y neogóticos y en la visita que realicé, en compañía de mi amada esposa, el pasado domingo 20 de marzo de 2022, pude observar que la Iglesia mantiene las puertas principales cerradas y solo se ingresa por una puerta lateral. La Iglesia tiene tres accesos principales coronados por ventanales, tal como lo pueden ver en la fotografía de la portada y las dos fotografías que cierran esta publicación. Por cierto, el aspecto más relevante de su ornamentación son las cornisas, rematadas por tres frontones arqueados que destacan, así como sobresalen los vanos de puertas y ventanas que atraen la mirada de todos los que tienen la dicha de pasar cerca del lugar.

Inside you can see three naves, in the manner of basilica churches. The central nave, taller and longer, rests on columns of the Tuscan order. Its main altar houses a colonial altarpiece made by the cabinetmaker and carver Francisco José Cardozo. It is good to point out that the aforementioned artist made other works in the Church: Altarpiece of Our Lady of Sorrows in the parish church of Our Lady of Altagracia, 1799; Main altarpiece of the parish church of Nuestra Señora de Altagracia, 1817. In this enclosure there are works by notable Venezuelan painters, such as "The Immaculate Conception" and "The Baptism of the Savior" by Antonio Herrera Toro (1857-1914).

En su interior se pueden ver tres naves, a la manera de las iglesias basilicales. La nave central, más alta y prolongada, se apoya sobre columnas de orden toscano. Su altar mayor acoge un retablo colonial realizado por el ebanista y tallista Francisco José Cardozo. Es bueno señalar que el artista mencionado realizó otras obras en la Iglesia: Retablo de Nuestra Señora de los Dolores de la iglesia parroquial de Nuestra Señora de Altagracia, 1799; Retablo mayor de la iglesia parroquial de Nuestra Señora de Altagracia, 1817. En este recinto se encuentran obras de notables pintores venezolanos, como «La Inmaculada Concepción» y «El bautismo del Salvador» de Antonio Herrera Toro (1857-1914).

If you ask me what most caught my attention about the Church of Our Lady of Altagracia, I would say that the design of the ceiling and the countless and tiny lights that are found in it. Although, and in honor of the truth, the altarpieces and every detail of wood that it has inside are extraordinary. This Church, in addition to being a house of prayer, is a "museum" that deserves to be visited by art lovers; for that reason, I dare to invite those who are interested in appreciating religious antiquities and great works of art, to visit the Church of Our Lady of Altagracia in Caracas.

Si me preguntan qué fue lo que mas me llamó la atención de la Iglesia Nuestra Señora de Altagracia, diré que el diseño del techo y las incontables y diminutas luminarias que en él se encuentran. Aunque, y en honor a la verdad, los retablos y cada detalle de madera que tiene en su interior son extraordinarios. Esta Iglesia, además de ser casa de oración, es un "museo" que merece ser visitado por los amantes del arte; por esa razón, me atrevo a invitar, a los que estén interesados en apreciar antiguedades religiosas y grandes obras de arte, a visitar la Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Altagracia de Caracas.
