About the Quote

No matter how sophisticated or complex or amazing the strategy is when we go into a new situation, the strategy goes out the window once the situation develops. Things happen for which no plan can be used. Timing gets thrown off. The unexpected rules the situation.

Just as important as comprehensive knowledge relevant to a situation is the ability to adapt as a situation evolves. In programming, bugs occur; ways to fix them need to be found. In sports, the original startegy needs to be modified to account for an unexpected advantage. In finance, investments need to change in order to capitalize on new opportunities or to compensate for greater losses than anticipated.

Whoever makes necessary adjustments at the right times will be more successful than someone who blindly follows doctrine or policy.

Some Information about Scotty Bowman

William Scott Bowman was born in MontrΓ©al, Quebec, Canada on 1933-September-18.

Better known as Scotty Bowman, he is a 9-time Stanley Cup-winning head coach in the National Hockey League (NHL). He is best known for leading the MontrΓ©al Canadiens to 4 consecutive Stanly Cups from 1976 through 1979. He also served as a General manager for the Buffalo Sabres. When he wasn't involved in the NHL itself, he was a commentator for the long -running Hockey Night in Canada program which airs on Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC). Scotty Bowman was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1991 as a Builder.

Scotty Bowman, like many Canadian boys of his era, wanted to play in the NHL. He played ice hockey until he reached Juniors. As a Junior hockey player, he sustained a severe head injury. This injury was big enough to end his dreams of playing in the NHL. Almost as soon as his dream to play in the NHL had ended, Bowman worked behind the bench for many teams at various levels of hockey (youth, junior, and minor).

In 1967 (at 34), Scotty Bowman was named head coach of the St. Louis Blues, one of the six teams which entered the NHL as part of the 1968 expansion. In the Blues' first 3 seasons in existence they appeared in 3 consecutive Stanley Cup Finals, finishing each time as Finalists.
