About the Quote
We each have the life we have. This is true not only in the most literal sense of having life as opposed to being dead or never born. It's also true in how we live our lives and what we do with the life we've been given.
For most people, our lives as we live them flow from the controls and environment established for us by our parents; after all, they guide us and protect us when we are young and require legal protection. As we grow into adolescence and young adulthood, we may gain more control of ouw lives by being allowed to choose where we go to secondary school. When we reach the age of majority (actually, a bit before that), we may be allowed to choose where we go to college or trade school. From there, we make the decisions governing our lives.
However, the life we inherited based on our education and experiences may not be what we had expected it to be. For example, being a movie star or professional athlete may not be as glamorous or exciting as we thought it would be. Or we end up as president or monarch, thinking that what we say goes, only to discover that we have less freedom than we had before becoming the maximum ruler.
At various points in life-- a few times for some people, maybe many times for others-- we have a chance to start with a clean slate. If the new life doesn't work out, we can clean the slate again and stao over.
Some Information about Coco Chanel
Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel was born in Saumur, France on 1883-August-19. She died in Paris, France on 1971-January-10.
Better known as Coco Chanel, she was a fashion designer who dominated haute couture for nearly six decades. She also founded the fashion and accessory company which bears her name. Among her contributions to the world of fashion were the Chanel suit, costume jewelry, the quilted purse, and-- most famous of all-- the "little black dress".
Gabrielle Chanel was born in the countryside in Saumur into poverty. When she was a very young girl, her mother died and her father left her at an orphanage. As a young woman, she worked briefly as a shopgirl before spending a few years working as a café singer.
Over the years she became associated with a few mean of means. In 1913, at around age 30, Chanel received financial assistance from one of these men of means (Arthur "Boy" Capel). With this assistance, Chanel opened a tiny millinery shop in Deauville, France. At this shop she sold hats, headdresses, and related accessories for women. Besides millinery, Chanel sold jersey sweaters and other simple sportswear.
By 1919 Chanel had attracted the attention of influential women of means thanks to her use of jersey fabric to create fashion presenting "the poor girl" look. As far back as this period, Chanel practiced one of her most famous fashion maxims-- "luxury must be comfortable, otherwise it is not luxury"-- to the point where she revolutionized the fashion industry.
