10 Years, No Bed- Ask Me Anything About Sleeping on the Floor
Sleeping on the floor wasn’t really on my bingo card growing up. I guess, it was the college phase that we all go through, maybe?
I just thought at first, it was such a downgrade from what I was used to. Until then suddenly, there’s a movement out there that calls themselves the minimalist and they preach about sleeping on the floor as something that was life changing. Maybe it was just glamorized poverty? Who knows haha.
Over here, we grew up with the idea that sleeping on the floor is bad for our health and were told that it was the leading cause of common cold and minor illnesses, even pulmonary diseases. Strangely, in the US oriental doctors and those health practitioners advised to sleep on the floor once in a while. So, who’s right here? nobody I guess. Anyway, the wildest of them all is that they sleep on the floor just because it's something quirky or unique.
I kept seeing videos on how people tried to sleep on the floor for 7 days and felt like their life was transformed. That was fascinating to read but I guess that was because they don’t get used to sleeping on the floor, hence it was a novel idea.
The funny thing is that because I was so used to sleeping on the floor at some point in life, when I stayed at hotels with extremely comfy beds and luxury, I ended up sleeping on the floor. I would put the blanket and everything and opt to sleep on the floor and somehow I felt a lot comfortable that way. I mean, people go to luxury hotels to enjoy the bed among other things but I was really not enjoying the bed. My brain was like “nope, we’d sleep on the floor with all the blankets and everything as the cover”.
I even convinced my mom to take out the bed frame and we’d sleep on the floor. So, we did. We slept on it for more than a couple of years. Until my mom and dad got back together and that was how we slept. Then, when my adoptive dad got sick, I guess that was the point where I hated the idea of it all.
I had to stay at the hospital for almost a couple of days taking care of my adoptive dad. We didn't get an extra bed and I had to sleep on a cold floor for days and because my mom is pretty tiny, she could squeeze herself in the hospital bed. Once we returned home, we never slept on the floor anymore and I found it extremely uncomfortable to sleep on the floor. Whenever my dad got hospitalized, I would rather stay home and only visit during visiting hours. I will not sleep on the hospital floor anymore.
Honestly, up until today I was still sleeping on the floor. I have this 2 cm mattress and that was it. We do have a bed but it was too big for me and I would have no space to put the desk. So, it got stashed away and moved to our guest room. We only managed to transport my bed frame from the other house today and I could finally stop sleeping on the floor.
This post and ideas have been something that was on my recording for a while though. I really wanted to talk about it because sleeping on the floor is like one of the things the “minimalists” do out there. I wouldn’t really advocate it anymore but again, you do you. Perhaps you’ll sleep on the floor for years only to find it’s not really the way you want to live your life. I love doing the fail and try approach and that was one of it :D it wasn’t just for me.
Also, sleeping on the floor in some Asian countries is pretty common and it was something normal. So, it was a lot easier to get into me and there are also people who told me that they would sleep on the floor to avoid witchcraft, it's a pretty wild story as well but it is how it goes around here.
Would you sleep on the floor?

I've heard people recommend it for the health benefits, and it does seem convenient in some ways, though ultimately, I doubt it would be for me. Here, for one thing, sleeping on the floor during the winter would be impossible because of the cold. But I applaud you for finding what works for you and doing your own thing even when sleeping elsewhere! :D You rock.
I can't imagine sleeping on the floor around 50F and even below that. Must've been pretty hellish. Interestingly, in South Korea, some of them still sleep on the floor and has this warmer floor set up. So, there's extra steps to prevent it being freezing during winter. But yes, after 10 years I'll never go back sleeping on the floor 🤣

Am gonna hand it to u for me sleeping on he floor either gives me waist pain or cold especially during the rain oh well i guess we all got what works for us
It's intriguing how it works the other way round for some people. Like you said, it gives you waist pain but some said it fixes their problem.
Hmmm guess every one is different then
Whatever works for you! I'm stoked to be back in my own bed and my firm latex mattress is amazing.
🤣 firm latex is the way to go! will never go back sleeping on the floor
I remember when we had the heat wave in my country earlier this year. It was suicidal to think of sleeping on the bed. Everyone migrated to the floor and somehow, I learnt to love it. Till I had hypothermia and Mom forbade me from trying it again.
Whatever gives you peace shouldn't be replaced, in my opinion.🌺
When it starts giving you problem, it's really best to let that go. Some people aren't built to sleep on the floor or they even don't have the proper heating floor just in case winter comes.
Actually this make me to remember growing up, I always enjoyed sleeping on the floor due to how cold the weather is always. But well that was then, I prefer a soft bed right now
Soft bed is the way to go right now 😃
I remember a couple of years ago that you told me in a post that you slept on the floor and that it was very comfortable and good for my health, at that time I thought, is it that I should sleep on the floor because of my neck pains? But then I gave up the idea because I have always slept in bed. It is curious to see your changes in your thinking over the years Mac, I wish I had been here earlier to know you from much earlier, I feel like I have seen a younger sister grow up and I have loved to see how you stand firm with some things and change other ways of seeing. Anyway your recommendation now serves me well to leave my bed in my room hahahaha, I still wasn't planning on removing it, but after that comment of yours that time, it always stayed in my thoughts the idea.
It's nice to read you again @macchiata, best regards 🫂💕
hahaha please, now I think it's better to sleep on a comfy bed. So, don't sleep on the floor if you don't have the proper mattress or even insulated floors 🤣
Hahaha, you had me fooled this whole time Mac 😅.
I do sleep on the floors as well, for the last one month. Got a good mattress and I didn’t even miss my bed so badly, got used to it within a week. So far so good, enjoying it at it's fullest.
