Siguiendo la tendencia de los re-makes, Netflix ha lanzado una película que ha causado controversia entre los fanáticos del cine, hoy hablaremos sobre He’s all that, o también conocida como Alguien como él, o Él es así, un remake de la película juvenil She’s all that(1999) donde nos cuentan la vida de Padgett, una “pequeña” influencer que tras descubrir a su novio engañándola durante un directo se encuentra perdiendo seguidores y con una reputación en declive que podría perjudicar no solo su carrera si no que también su futuro universitario, por lo que en orden de recuperar su imagen hace una apuesta donde asegura poder transformar al chico menos popular de su escuela en el rey del baile de graduación, aunque el enamorarse de él no estaba en sus planes originales
Con un presupuesto de 20 Millones de dólares y bajo la dirección de Mark Waters (también director de Freaky Friday y Mean girls, algunas de las películas adolescentes más icónicas de los 2000’s) uno se esperaría un trabajo, por lo mínimo, decente y divertido, por lo el día de hoy les compartiré mi opinión muy personal sobre diversos aspectos de la película.
Following the trend of re-makes, Netflix has released a movie that has caused controversy among movie fans, today we will talk about He's all that, a remake of the teen romantic movie She's all that (1999) where we are told the life of Padgett, a "little" influencer who after discovering her boyfriend cheating on her during a live show finds herself losing followers and with a declining reputation that could harm not only her career but also her college future, So in order to recover her image she makes a bet that she can transform the least popular guy in her school into the prom king, although falling in love with him was not in her original plans.
With a budget of 20 Million dollars and under the direction of Mark Waters (also director of Freaky Friday and Mean girls, some of the most iconic teen movies of the 2000's) one would expect a work, at the very least, decent and fun, so today I will share with you my very personal opinion on various aspects of the movie.
Esta película es el debut de la influencer Addison Rae como actriz, en donde no solo es la protagonista, sino que también interpreta a, bueno, una influencer, y es bastante obvio su falta de experiencia como actriz pero no da espacio a una crítica más profunda principalmente por el hecho de que su papel no era tan complicado, considerando que está inspirado en ella misma. El 80% de la película se basa en ella siendo amigable y sonriendo todo el tiempo y el otro 20% es sobre la actriz batallando con interpretar emociones más complejas. Padgett es un personaje algo soso por sí sola, en la película intentan darle una historia más profunda de fondo al hacer que tenga una especie de “doble vida” en donde pretende ante sus amigos y seguidores tener una vida más lujosa de la que realmente tiene
Luego tenemos a Cameron, el co-protagonista e interés amoroso de Padgett, un chico que no cree ser como los demás, que desprecia todo la modernidad y que ama todo lo clásico y “filosófico”, y bueno, quizás ser un amante de la filosofía, la fotografía y lo retro no sería malo para su personaje si él no considerara que todo lo contrario a sus gustos es automáticamente basura
Padgett y Cameron son polos opuestos pero parecen enamorarse con apenas el mínimo de interacción y cosas en común, a pesar compartir un que otro momento agradable, realmente nunca se nos muestra mucho más allá de los momentos en que Padgett intenta convencer a Cameron para hacer algunas cosas juntos y proceder a transformarlo de por medio, la “evolución” de su relación se ve muy innatural y obviamente forzada, los diálogos incómodos y la actuación más que especifica dan poco espacio a los personajes de desarrollar un romance como normalmente lo harían los adolescentes de ahora, digo, se que una hora y media de película no es precisamente mucho para desarrollar una historia romántica muy profunda, pero era algo que se podía trabajar con un guión más decente lo cual esta película no hizo, y seré honesta, creo que una amistad entre nuestros protagonistas hubiese sido encantadora, se supone que es una película romántica pero quizás si se hubiesen esforzado para que ambos desarrollaran una amistad de por medio en lugar de un romance fugaz e inmediato toda la película sería mucho más agradable
Los personajes son algo débiles, muy muy sencillos, y nada nuevo que no se haya visto en otras película (tampoco mejor logrado que en otras producciones) y creo que lo que juega en contra a los actores de esta película es el guion, no hay realmente suficiente espacio para que ellos puedan demostrar que tan buenos actores son ya que todo los diálogos y escena de la película se ve bastante forzado para que funcionen de una manera en especifico. algunos personajes que medianamente parecen ser auténticos son los personajes secundarios como Nisha(la mejor amiga de Cameron) Brin (la hermana de Cameron) y la antagonista de la película, Alden, que actuaron tan bien como me lo esperaría considerando sus personalidades, intereses y relación con los protagonistas
This movie is influencer Addison Rae's debut as an actress, where she is not only the main character, but also plays, well, an influencer, and it's pretty obvious her lack of experience as an actress but doesn't give room for a deeper critique mainly due to the fact that her role wasn't that complicated, considering it's inspired by herself. 80% of the movie is based on her being friendly and smiling all the time and the other 20% is about the actress struggling with playing more complex emotions. Padgett is a somewhat bland character on her own, in the movie they try to give her a deeper backstory by having her have a sort of "double life" where she pretends to her friends and fans that she has a more luxurious life than she really does
Then we have Cameron, Padgett's co-star and love interest, a guy who doesn't think he's like everyone else, who despises all modernity and loves everything classic and "philosophical", and well, maybe being a lover of philosophy, photography and retro wouldn't be bad for his character if he didn't consider everything contrary to his tastes to be automatically trash
Padgett and Cameron are polar opposites but seem to fall in love with just the bare minimum of interaction and things in common, despite sharing the odd nice moment, we are never really shown much beyond the moments when Padgett tries to convince Cameron to do some things together and proceed to transform him in between, the "evolution" of their relationship looks very unnatural and obviously forced, the awkward dialogue and more than specific acting give little room for the characters to develop a romance as teenagers nowadays normally would, I mean, I know an hour and a half of movie isn't exactly a lot to develop a very deep romantic story, but it was something that could be worked with a more decent script which this movie didn't do, and I'll be honest, I think a friendship between our main characters would have been lovely, it's supposed to be a romantic movie but maybe if they would have made an effort for both of them to develop a friendship in between instead of a fleeting and immediate romance the whole movie would be much more enjoyable
The characters are kind of weak, very very simple, and nothing new that hasn't been seen in other movies (not better achieved than in other productions either) and I think what plays against the actors in this movie is the script, there is not really enough room for them to show how goo actors they are since all the dialogues and scene of the movie looks pretty forced to work in a specific way. Some of the characters that seem halfway authentic are the supporting characters like Nisha (Cameron's best friend) Brin (Cameron's sister) and the antagonist of the movie, Alden, who acted as well as I would expect considering their personalities, interests and relationship with the main characters
También siento que representaron de manera muy pobre el mundo de las redes sociales y la vida de los influencers, en su mayoría la manera en la que intentan retratar esto parece mucho más como una parodia que una realidad a medias, casi como si el director apenas hiciera un mínimo esfuerzo en comprender como funcionan realmente la redes sociales de hoy en día y la manera en que los jóvenes interactúan con ellas y esto es más obvio tomando en cuenta la escena que desencadena todo los hechos relevantes de la película
Luego de que la “amiga” de Padgett firmara en vivo el momento en el que ella se supone que le dará una linda sorpresa a su popular novio termina con ella encontrándolo siéndole infiel y por ende con Padgett teniendo una clase de colapso emocional por el momento, nuestra protagonista se vuelve viral y usada por todos (tanto seguidores como compañeros de escuela) como un meme, lo cual la hace perder seguidores y siendo el objeto de bromas y comentarios groseros por muchos
Primero, podría comprender un poco más el que Padgett fuera humillada por reaccionar así si esto se tratara de una película a los inicios de los 2000’s pero estamos hablando de una producción “moderna” inspirada en el mundo de los influencers y adolescentes actuales, si bien tal reacción hubiese causado que una que otra persona hiciera burla de ella, en todo caso resultaría con la mayoría de sus seguidores (y no seguidores) apoyándola e incluso podría representar una situación producente para nuestra protagonista si sabe cómo manejarla bien, es más, si es usada como un “meme” viral normalmente terminaría con Padgett ganando ciento seguidores es sus redes sociales. Pero no, no resulta ser así y es ciertamente el hecho que más me desconcertó de toda la película
I also feel that they represented in a very poor way the world of social networks and the life of influencers, for the most part the way they try to portray this seems much more like a parody than a half reality, almost as if the director barely made a minimal effort to understand how social networks really work nowadays and the way young people interact with them and this is more obvious taking into account the scene that triggers all the relevant events of the movie
After Padgett's "friend" live-signs the moment in which she is supposed to give her popular boyfriend a nice surprise ends with her finding him being unfaithful to her and thus with Padgett having a kind of emotional breakdown for the moment, our protagonist goes viral and used by everyone (both followers and schoolmates) as a meme, which makes her lose followers and being the object of jokes and rude comments by many
First, I could understand a little more why Padgett would be humiliated for reacting like that if this was a movie from the early 2000's but we are talking about a "modern" production inspired by the world of influencers and teenagers today, although such a reaction would have caused one or the other person to make fun of her, in any case it would result with most of her followers (and non-followers) supporting her and could even represent a productive situation for our protagonist if she knows how to handle it well, moreover, if used as a viral meme it would normally end up with Padgett gaining a hundred followers on her social networks. But no, it doesn't turn out that way and it's certainly the fact that puzzled me the most in the whole movie
Creo que hay que dejar algo en claro, y es que He’s all that no es una película creada para la crítica, es más, ni siquiera es su propósito ser considerada por críticos del cine, es una película cuyo objetivo es mayormente comercial inclinado más que todo a una audiencia adolescente (en su mayoría fans de Addison Rae) y ya sabes, ese grupo de personas que no tiene ni idea de que ver en un día libre y simplemente quieren algo para pasar el rato
Mientras leía opiniones sobre esta película en twitter un comentario me llamo la atención en particular “no es una película que se suponga que tenga que ser tomada en serio, solo está allí para entretener” bien… quizás no fue exactamente así como decía el tweet pero básicamente eso es lo que quería transmitir al final y no podría estar más de acuerdo
I think one thing needs to be made clear, and that is that He's all that is not a film created for critics, indeed, it's not even meant to be considered by film critics, it's a film that is mostly commercially aimed at a teenage audience (mostly Addison Rae fans) and you know, that group of people who have no idea what to watch on a day off and just want something to pass the time
While reading opinions about this movie on twitter one comment in particular caught my attention "it's not a movie that's supposed to be taken seriously, it's just there to entertain" well... maybe that wasn't exactly how the tweet said but basically that's what I wanted to convey in the end and I couldn't agree more

Un cuatro sin más por que a pesar de todo lo malo que encontré al verla, es de por lejos de las parejas menos toxicas de las películas románticas de netflix. A four without more because despite all the bad things I found while watching it, it is by far one of the least toxic couples of the romantic movies on netflix. Hola me encanto tu punto de vista sobre esta película, porque es que también comparto tu opinión sobre ella, pensé que seria mucho más emocionante esta historia, la verdad no conozco la película original de los años 80 o 90, pero está en particular me pareció demasiado superficial, así como dices tu, solo como para conocer a Addison como actriz y ya, pero la historia no te atrapada ni enamorada por ningún lado, además que realmente todo parece muy forzado y que la historia va como corriendo, estoy segura que hemos visto muchas más películas románticas que nos hacen comprar su historia. No hay nada más superficial que esta historia.

At the moment I have not wanted to see it. I've read other reviews, some liked it, some didn't like it, the main influencer girl I didn't know, I'm not aware of all the famous people on tik tok or instagram, I found out she was a modern day influencer because of the reviews of this film. Maybe I'll see it when it's on tv someday.
It took me a while to convince myself to watch it, I recommend that you watch it on a day when you really have absolutely nothing to watch and are very bored and don't take things too seriously, you might even enjoy it or find some good things about it unlike me (who watched it with a very critical mind at the time) :) !
