Desde hace mucho tiempo no hago piezas para Salones, ni muestras expositivas, pero creo que es una excelente forma de mostrar el potencial de mi trabajo o el de cualquier artesano o artista que participe, ayudando a mejorar la visibilidad del sector y creadores artesanales más allá de una feria o de su círculo de clientes o seguidores. Los Salones, Premios y cualquier muestra expositiva son unos espacios donde los objetos creados artesanalmente pueden competir a nivel artístico y conceptual, para ser apreciados desde otra perspectiva y otro tipo de público.

Este es el cartel que invitaba a la participación del Premio Municipal de Artesanía.

Este concurso es organizado por la Comisión de Cultura del Consejo Municipal del Municipio Libertador de Caracas, bajo apoyo del Consejo de Artesanos de Caracas y la Red de Arte, el tema es la identidad Caraqueña; es decir, todos aquellos elementos icónicos, visuales, naturales, personajes, históricos que puedan relacionarse con la ciudad desde el punto de vista del creador.

Tenía el deber de participar, así que me puse a escoger que iba a hacer, me pareció en un inicio propicio resaltar alguna obra arquitectónica de finales del siglo 19 y principios del 20, pero técnicamente no me era posible, porque mis habilidades de joyería no llegan a ese nivel; después pensé en un personaje que pudiera resaltar la grandeza de Caracas, me hice un recorrido por artistas musicales como Óscar de León, por el hecho de que es un icono global de la salsa, pero después me decante por algo más grande, una figura que es reconocida, pero que ya no se nombra como antes, este es el Dr. Jacinto Convit, que es un icono de la Medicina en Venezuela junto al Dr. Jose Gregorio Hernández que es considerado una figura religiosa, de la cual ya he hecho piezas, por ejemplo su silueta que puedes ver su proceso de elaboración aqui.

El escoger a Jacinto Convit fue básicamente porque es un ciudadano más que ejemplar, es conocido porque descubrió la vacuna contra la lepra y esto ayudo erradicarla a nivel mundial, además dejo otras vacunas contra el cáncer de seno, colon y estómago. Él dedicó toda una vida a la ciencia de la salud, además es un nacido en Caracas y toda su carrera la hizo en esta ciudad, manteniéndose activo casi todo su vida que por cierto vivió un poco más de 100 años...

Me decidí por realizarle un Medallón con su rostro ya en su versión longeva, en su mayor nivel de sabiduría y conocimiento acumulado; el nombre para que las personas terminen de asociarlo y una jeringa como símbolo de Vacuna. Esta obra de joyería conmemorativa considero que no solo resalta la Importancia de Jacinto a nivel profesional, sino que también es una muestra de que Caracas es más que sus calles, hechos históricos, arquitecturas, monumentos y héroes de independencia.

Nuestra ciudad capital también es capaz de producir sujetos que pueden cambiar para mejor a la humanidad entera, por medio de la investigación, ciencia, compromiso e ingenio. Jacinto Convit es un ejemplo de los ciudadanos que deben ser más conocidos, seguidos e imitados por todos, si queremos que el mundo sea mucho mejor o al menos que nuestra ciudad Caracas sea mejor para su gente. Considero que los hombres de ciencia e innovación deberían tener más calles, plazas, monumentos y edificio con su nombre, para que así los niños pregunten por ellos y algunos quieran imitarlos o al menos ser una guía de vida...

Tuve algunos retos para elaborar la medalla, más que todo para el diseño, me preguntaba ¿cómo transfería el rostro para poder cortarlo sobre la lámina?, intente dibujar el rostro a mano y luego opte por usar Inkscape en la PC para hacer el diseño en formato vectorial; el rostro lo dibuje con la menor cantidad de líneas que permitieran que sea reconocible; use de base para el dibujo la foto que le mostré más arriba sacada de un artículo la OPS, creo que está parte del dibujo fue la que más dolor de cabeza me dio y era la más fundamental para poder cortar sobre el metal, el tema de las técnicas para elaborar la pieza si las tenía más controladas, ya que el diseño se pensó para que todo fuera realizado con la Segueta.

Los materiales que utilice fueron: latón ó bronce de 0,8 mm, cobre 0.4 mm y argollas de cobre de 1mm de espesor.

Herramientas: Dremel, Arco de Segueta para joyería, pinzas de joyería, motor de banco...

Consumibles: fresas de 0,7 mm, lijas, limas, pelos de segueta 1/0, fresas diamantadas, mopa de pulir, cera de pulir...

Procesos

Imprimí el diseño de la medalla de unos 5 cm y lo pegue sobre la lámina de bronce de 0,8 mm, use para esto pega de barra, espere unos minutos para proceder a abrir los huecos para el corte interno con la segueta usando las sierras 1/0 que me parecen que cortan más rápido y me duran más que otras medidas.

Al estar pegada la figura en una lámina algo grande y se me dificultaba hacer los cortes internos, así decidí cortar la silueta redonda de la medalla, básicamente la figura es bastante grande para poder maniobrar con los cortes internos y también la lámina era lo suficientemente dura, ya que el bronce venía templado.

Procedí a quitar la impresión, esta vez me dio por utilizar fuego con el soplete, aunque regularmente la quito con agua, cómo ven en la imagen a mi opinión quedo el corte interno bien, pero necesita ser repasado con la segueta, se notan los agujeros de la fresa y que algunos trazos hay que mejorarlos.

Tocaba hacer el aro por dónde pasaría la cadena o collar del medallón, conseguí una lámina de cobre y la corte con esa forma de ovalada con la segueta, abrí hueco y después doble con una pinza redonda.

En esta imagen se aprecia el medallón ya corregido con sus cortes internos y lijada su superficie, use lija 220, 340 y 400, después la pulí en el motor de banco con su cera para el brillo espejo, monte el pasador para el collar con la medalla. También aprecian en la foto la punta del Dremel una fresa cabeza redonda para desbastar el metal que utilizaría para probar hacer algunas texturas en el pasador.

Para que el rostro de Jacinto fuera más reconocible había que trazar unas líneas más delgadas, estás debía hacerlas grabadas, por lo que dibuje estas líneas con un marcador permanente de punta muy fina, después monte una fresa fina de 0,7 mm que utilizo para abrir huecos, pero modificada, ya que la unta está afilada de forma cónica, con eso poco a poco fui grabando las líneas que trace con el marcador, después te muestro una fresa diamantada de punta redonda, con eso hice los detalles en el borde de la medalla, pulí un poco más y limpie los residuos, así la pieza quedo terminada.

Este es el resultado final, espero se pueda apreciar los detalles.

I haven't made pieces for salons or exhibitions for a long time, but I think it's an excellent way to show the potential of my work or that of any artisan or artist who participates, helping to improve the visibility of the sector and artisan creators beyond. of a fair or of his circle of clients or followers. The Salons, Awards and any exhibition are spaces where objects created by hand can compete at an artistic and conceptual level, to be appreciated from another perspective and another type of public.

This is the poster inviting you to participate in the Municipal Craft Award.

This contest is organized by the Culture Commission of the Municipal Council of the Libertador Municipality of Caracas, under the support of the Artisans Council of Caracas and the Art Network, the theme is the Caracas identity; that is, all those iconic, visual, natural, personal, historical elements that can be related to the city from the point of view of the creator.

I had a duty to participate, so I began to choose what I was going to do. At first it seemed propitious to me to highlight some architectural work from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, but technically it was not possible for me, because my jewelry skills did not they reach that level; then I thought of a character that could highlight the greatness of Caracas, I took a tour of musical artists like Óscar de León, due to the fact that he is a global icon of salsa, but then I opted for something bigger, a figure that is recognized, but is no longer named as before, this is Dr. Jacinto Convit, who is an icon of Medicine in Venezuela along with Dr. Jose Gregorio Hernández who is considered a religious figure, of which I have already made pieces For example, its silhouette that you can see its production process here.

Choosing Jacinto Convit was basically because he is a more than exemplary citizen, he is known for discovering the vaccine against leprosy and this helped to eradicate it worldwide , I also left other vaccines against [breast] cancer (https://www.jacintoconvit.org.ve/es/prensa/2018/estudio-cientifico-relevancia-internacional-cancer-mama.asp), colon and stomach . He dedicated his entire life to the science of health, he was also born in Caracas and his entire career was spent in this city, staying active for almost all of his life, who by the way lived a little over 100 years... .

I decided to make him a Medallion with his face already in his long-lived version, in the highest level of wisdom and accumulated knowledge of him; the name so that people finish associating it and a syringe as a symbol of Vaccine. I believe that this work of commemorative jewelry not only highlights the importance of Jacinto on a professional level, but is also a sign that Caracas is more than its streets, historical facts, architecture, monuments, and independence heroes.

Our capital city is also capable of producing subjects that can change the whole of humanity for the better, through research, science, commitment and ingenuity. Jacinto Convit is an example of the citizens who must be better known, followed and imitated by all, if we want the world to be much better or at least for our city Caracas to be better for its people. I believe that men of science and innovation should have more streets, squares, monuments and buildings named after him, so that children ask for them and some want to imitate them or at least be a guide to life...

I had some challenges making the medal, mostly for the design, I was wondering how do I transfer the face so that I could cut it on the sheet? vector format; I drew the face with the fewest lines that would allow it to be recognizable; use the photo that I showed you above, taken from an article by PAHO, as the basis for the drawing, I think it is part of the drawing was the one that gave me the most headache and was the most fundamental to be able to cut on the metal, the subject of the techniques to elaborate the piece if I had them more controlled, since the design was thought so that everything was done with the Saw.

The materials I used were: 0.8mm brass or bronze, 0.4mm copper and 1mm thick copper rings.

Tools: Dremel, Jeweler's Bow Saw, Jeweler's pliers, Bench motor...

Consumables: 0.7 mm burs, sandpaper, files, 1/0 saw hairs, diamond burs, polishing pad, polishing wax...

processes

I printed the design of the medal of about 5 cm and glued it on the 0.8 mm bronze sheet, I used a bar glue for this, wait a few minutes to proceed to open the holes for the internal cut with the saw blade using the saws 1/0, which seems to me to cut faster and last longer than other sizes.

As the figure was glued to a somewhat large sheet and it was difficult for me to make the internal cuts, so I decided to cut the round silhouette of the medal, basically the figure is large enough to be able to maneuver with the internal cuts and the sheet was also hard enough , since the bronze came tempered.

I proceeded to remove the impression, this time I decided to use fire with the torch, although I regularly remove it with water, as you can see in the image, in my opinion the internal cut was fine, but it needs to be reviewed with the saw, the holes are noticeable of the strawberry and that some strokes must be improved.

It was time to make the ring where the medallion chain or necklace would pass, I got a copper sheet and cut it with that oval shape with the saw, I opened a hole and then doubled it with a round pliers.

In this image you can see the medallion already corrected with its internal cuts and sanded its surface, use 220, 340 and 400 sandpaper, then I polished it in the bench motor with its wax for the mirror shine, mount the pin for the necklace with the medal. Also seen in the photo is the tip of the Dremel, a round head milling cutter for roughing the metal that I would use to test make some textures on the pin.

In order for Jacinto's face to be more recognizable, it was necessary to draw some thinner lines, these had to be engraved, so I drew these lines with a very fine-tipped permanent marker, then mounted a fine 0.7 mm burr that I use to open holes, but modified, since the tip is sharpened in a conical shape, with that little by little I was engraving the lines that I traced with the marker, then I show you a round-tipped diamond bur, with that I made the details on the edge of the medal, I polished a little more and cleaned the residue, so the piece was finished.
