The jewel in the crown of my collection

Hello friends. Today I want to share with you the jewel of my coin collection. This coin has a history and although it is not the oldest coin I have, it is the most valuable. I found this one in an unusual place: near an old sugar mill where slaves worked at the end of the 18th century. It is a 4 reales coin of Ferdinand VII of Spain, minted in 1823.

When I found this coin it had just finished raining, I went out with friends to a creek that is at a certain distance from the house of one of them, while we were walking near the old sugar mill; which was on the way and only its foundations remain.

That day, at the edge of the road, I saw it, it had been exposed by the dragging of the rain. As I approached it, I realized that it was an ancient coin. The emotion I felt at that moment I am not able to describe. I knew I had found something special.

The coin I found turned out to be a silver 4 reales piece of Ferdinand VII, the monarch who ruled Spain in the early 1800s.

The obverse of the coin features the right bust of King Ferdinand VII and the inscription, "POR LA GRACIA DE DIOS Y LA CONST." This phrase reflects authority; the reminder of the legitimacy of monarchical power under the Constitution that had been realized in 1812 and the power still held by the church.

On the reverse of the coin, there is the Spanish coat of arms and the inscription, "REY DE LAS ESPAÑAS." This highlights Ferdinand VII as king of the various regions that made up the Spanish empire at that time.

The coin was minted at the Royal Mint in Madrid, Spain, one of the oldest mints in the world that has been in operation from 1591 to the present. The technique used to mint this coin was press minting, a technique that allowed coins to be produced more efficiently and uniformly than previous methods.

This 4 reales coin represents a tumultuous time in the history of Spain and many other parts of the world. During the reign of Ferdinand VII, Spain was involved in conflicts such as the Spanish War of Independence and the struggle for independence in Latin America.

In my quest to learn more about this coin, I have discovered that there are collectors and collecting enthusiasts who value pieces like this because of their rarity and connection to significant historical moments. However, my intention is not to sell it, but to preserve it as part of my heirloom and share its story with others passionate about history and antiques.

I hope this story has been enjoyable for you as it has been for me to share. collecting antiques is a passion that allows me to travel back in time through coins and banknotes. It leads me to ask myself questions that I will never discover: Who did it belong to? How did it get there? Thank you for making it this far and I look forward to seeing you next time.

You have an excellent copy, congratulations. I love these types of antiques. The collection of antique objects and paintings is my passion. I have several more coins, even an older one from 1700, but they are in very bad condition, they don't appreciate very well, it's a shame. I'm glad we have a common hobby. thank you

I enjoy the story very much!
Was it minted 1833, or 1825?
Thanks for sharing, @luisdey !

It looks like a 5 but it is a 3, even the last year it was minted was 1923, if I am not mistaken the king died that year. I take this opportunity to tell you that thanks to you I decided to write in Leo on this subject. Thank you
