Después de unas buenas reseñas de fantasía, siempre hay un buen momento para cambiar de género literario y leer algo un poco más oscuro. Uno de estos libros fue Scarred de Emily McIntire, el cual pertenece a una serie de libros titulados "Never After". Se supone que estos libros son retellings de algunas historias clásicas como Peter Pan, el Rey León y otras más, pero enfocadas en los villanos. Yo antes que nada no considero que sea un retelling exactamente, ya que toma como inspiración los nombres de los personajes, los transforma en humanos (si no lo eran en el cuento original) y hace una historia total y completamente diferente. Para mí estos libros toman el villano de esa historia y le dan un cuento que no tiene nada que ver con el original, cosa que a mí me gustó muchísimo, pero no les quiero vender este libro como un reteling. Yo comencé leyendo el segundo libro, titulado Scarred, porque lo compré en una oferta que no podía desaprovechar y como estos libros no dependen uno de otros, son historias autoconclusivas, entonces se puede leer en cualquier orden. Pero si mucho más que contarles hablemos de esta historia.

After a few good fantasy reviews, there's always a good time to switch literary genres and read something a little darker. One such book was Scarred by Emily McIntire, which belongs to a series of books titled “Never After”. These books are supposed to be retellings of some classic stories like Peter Pan, the Lion King and more, but with a focus on villains. I first of all don't consider it a retelling exactly, since it takes as inspiration the names of the characters, transforms them into humans (if they weren't in the original tale) and makes a totally and completely different story. For me these books take the villain from that story and give him a story that has nothing to do with the original, which I really liked, but I don't want to sell this book as a retelling. I started reading the second book, titled Scarred, because I bought it in an offer that I could not miss and as these books do not depend on each other, they are self-conclusive stories, so you can read them in any order. But without much more to tell you let's talk about this story.

Esta historia está inspirada en el Rey León, se podría decir que nuestro protagonista es Scar. Nos narra la vida del principe marcado, Tristan Faasa del reino llamado "Gloria Terra", donde su padre es el rey y su hermano Michael es el príncipe heredero. El prólogo de esta historia comienza directo, ya que presenta la muerte del rey, donde el príncipe heredero planea ascender al trono. Tristán sospecha que su padre no murió por causas naturales, sino que su hermano tuvo algo que ver. Y yo siento que eso es el impulso que le dio a Tristán para querer robarse el tono, aunque él no sea el candidato, ya que nadie lo quiere porque él es como oscuro moralmente, además sus cicatrices hacen que sea "aterrador" aunque haya sido su hermano quien le hizo ese daño. Tristan es ese personaje moralmente gris que nos encanta, que cuando conocemos su historia decimos que no es tan malo, pero que sí hace cosas bien cuestionables para lograr sus propósitos.

This story is inspired by the Lion King, you could say that our protagonist is Scar. It narrates the life of the marked prince, Tristan Faasa of the kingdom called “Gloria Terra”, where his father is the king and his brother Michael is the crown prince. The prologue of this story starts off straightforward, as it presents the death of the king, where the crown prince plans to ascend to the throne. Tristan suspects that his father did not die of natural causes, but that his brother had something to do with it. And I feel like that's the impetus for Tristan to want to steal the tone, even though he's not the candidate, since no one wants him because he's kind of morally dark, plus his scars make him “scary” even though it was his brother who did that damage to him. Tristan is that morally gray character that we love, that when we know his story we say that he is not so bad, but he does questionable things to achieve his purposes.

Al mismo tiempo conocemos a Sara, una chica del pueblo de Silva, que llega a la capital para casarse con el futuro rey y convertirse en la reina de Gloria Terra. Aunque Sara tiene sus propios planes vengativos, debido a la muerte de su padre causada por la corona hace tiempo atrás. Sara es una mujer inteligente, que tiene que fingir ante todos y también averiguar qué pasa en el palacio. Ella llega a ese papel por su tío y primo, quienes traban directo con el rey, pero que también quieren el poder (llámalo juego de tronos). Sara considera a Michael aburrido, y se siente un poco atraída por Tristan, aunque al ser un Faasa ella siente que no puede entregarse al amor para poder cumplir con su venganza.

At the same time we meet Sara, a girl from the village of Silva, who arrives in the capital to marry the future king and become the queen of Gloria Terra. Although Sara has her own vengeful plans, due to the death of her father caused by the crown some time ago. Sara is a smart woman, who has to pretend before everyone and also find out what is going on in the palace. She is brought into the role by her uncle and cousin, who deal directly with the king, but who also want power (call it a game of thrones). Sara finds Michael boring, and is a bit attracted to Tristan, though being a Faasa she feels she can't give herself over to love in order to fulfill her revenge.

Algo que me hizo gracia y me gustó mucho, fue el hombre que le dieron al grupo rebelde de esta historia: "las hienas". Un grupo de personas que atentan contra el buen juicio del pueblo, liderados en secreto por el príncipe marcado, mientras trazan planes de apoderarse de la corona. Ya avanzados en la historia, Sara descubre quien mató a su padre realmente y puede relajarse un poco con su relación con Tristan, aunque siguen ocultos, ya que en teoría ella es la prometida de su hermano y con respecto a la venganza de Sara, avanza un poco. Aunque no todo es hermoso, ya que los descubren, Michael los atrapa, pero las hienas liberan a Sara y es ella quien debe liderarlos para poder salvar a Tristán. Demostrándonos que ella no es una protagonista débil, es bastante fuerte e inteligente, eso me hizo quererla.

Something that made me laugh and I liked a lot, was the man they gave to the rebel group of this story: “the hyenas”. A group of people who attempt against the good judgment of the people, secretly led by the marked prince, as they plot plans to take over the crown. Already advanced in the story, Sara discovers who really killed her father and can relax a little with her relationship with Tristan, although they are still hidden, since in theory she is his brother's fiancée and regarding Sara's revenge, she advances a little. Although not everything is beautiful, since they are discovered, Michael catches them, but the hyenas free Sara and it is she who must lead them in order to save Tristan. Showing us that she is not a weak protagonist, she is quite strong and intelligent, that made me love her.

El final es bastante épico, la "batalla" final, el castillo quemándose, la muerte de Michael, la rebelión por todos lados y nuestros protagonistas juntos. Tristan y Sara reinaron durante años, solo para hacerse a un lado y dejarle el trono a un heredero de Michel, un hijo bastardo que ellos le tenían mucho aprecio, una escena muy linda si me preguntan a mí. Y nuestros protagonistas moralmente grises se retiran para ser felices, con el objetivo de morir juntos en las tierras del reino, siempre cuidándolos a todos. Creo que esta es una historia gris con un final feliz, es muy perfecta. Les dejo una frase de Tristan que me encontré cuando busque el libro nuevamente para hacer esta reseña, la foto del libro en físico y como lo tengo tan marcado, sencillamente lo amo. Me gustó mucho como escribe Emily McIntire, me atrapo por completo, amé a Tristan, amé a Sara y amé esta historia, un sólido 5 estrellas y espero leer los demás libros de esta saga. Nos leemos pronto!

The ending is pretty epic, the final “battle”, the castle burning, Michael's death, rebellion all around and our protagonists together. Tristan and Sara reigned for years, only to step aside and leave the throne to an heir of Michel, a bastard son they held dear, a very nice scene if you ask me. And our morally gray protagonists retire to be happy, with the goal of dying together in the lands of the kingdom, always looking out for them all. I think this is a grey story with a happy ending, it's so perfect. I leave you with a quote from Tristan that I came across when I was looking for the book again to do this review, the picture of the book in physical and how I have it so marked, I simply love it. I loved the way Emily McIntire writes, it completely grabbed me, I loved Tristan, I loved Sara and I loved this story, a solid 5 stars and I look forward to reading the other books in this saga.
