The Woes of Poe and a Startling Discovery
My pride took a bit of a knock this morning when I discovered that Poe's weird skittish behaviour has not been his instinctive concern over me!
Poe has had a couple of foster parents and has seen many changes in his life, something which similarly and sadly happens to many children of the human kind.
He more than likely was the son of a single Mom, and was taken to the SPCA in Johannesburg, and that's where my son and his gal saw him when they went in search of a feral baby.
Apparently, all the other kittens were huddling in the corner but Poe boldly strolled over to them; so they always say, he chose them, not the other way around!
Poe happily lived with them for around four years until they decided to emigrate. Unfortunately, many practicalities made it impossible to take him with across the waters.
Arthur and I were very excited when they announced that we were going to have a grandchild, but our excitement at the prospect of finally becoming grandparents was squashed with the next announcement, not a request, by the way, it was a grandchild of the feral kind!
And so Poe was brought to Durban.
His first set of foster parents stayed on for three weeks to help him adapt to his new environment while getting to know his foster grandparents.
He then was left solely in the care of the two of us oldies, and in a very different climate. Coming from the dry Highveld to the subtropical Kwazulu Natal coastal region amid a hot and humid summer must have been quite a shock, besides the trauma of losing his foster parents.
He soon settled in even though we clashed heads in the beginning as we had attracted many garden birds which of course was way too tempting for this young man. When he brought in his first trophy I was NOT impressed, so we added a bell to his collar to warn the birds, but Poe, like any other cat, strikes at the speed of lightning, so the beautiful little garden birds have no chance!
A couple of weeks before Arthur's passing, Poe started behaving oddly. He does not like sitting on our laps, but suddenly took to jumping on Arthur's lap. He even gave me that honour, and looked up at me with big eyes, as if he wanted to say something! He for sure sensed there was something wrong with his grandpa Daddy.
He really missed Arthur in the beginning and started following me wherever I went, always under my feet, or sitting on top of my feet, as if to say: 'Don't you leave me now as well!'
Poe's been striking many weird poses while trying to cool down.
I indeed left him for six weeks when I visited my son in the Netherlands two months later, I could not smuggle a cat into Europe after all!
So recently, just before I went in for abdominal surgery, he started behaving oddly again. I was not well, and of course in a lot of pain afterward. He was not happy when I rejected him when he tried jumping on my lap, and actually nipped me on my leg later that day.
I've learnt that Poe does not take kindly to rejection!
This week, he suddenly started meowing intently and getting frustrated as I could not figure out what he wanted. We leave a window open for him to get in and out during the night, but the morning ritual is to open the door leading to the verandah, and he's usually out in a flash once he's sniffed to see if there's danger lurking somewhere. I noticed he was very hesitant this week.
When I opened the kitchen door earlier than usual this morning, everything made sense.
A pack of at least eight Banded Mongooses were running right outside my kitchen door.
We had seen them a couple of times previously, but it was at the very bottom of our property, I'd never seen them so close to the house!
I ran to get my phone to take a pic but only managed to capture one straggler outside my dining room window.
Apologies, the images are not too clear.
I learnt that cats are very afraid of them, and Poe has reason to be as they will attack if they see another animal, especially a cat who loves hunting. They may believe part of our garden is their territory!
Mongooses are also known for their ability to kill venomous snakes, such as cobras, due to their speed, agility, and cunning.
AND!
Mongooses are sometimes referred to as “the most dangerous animals on the planet,” as they have had a significant impact on native species when introduced to non-native areas.
AND!!!
A mongoose bite can be painful and dangerous. They have finely pointed incisors and carnassial teeth, the largest of which is their canines, designed to grip and cause puncture wounds. This can often appear as small needle puncture marks, but even more dangerous is the bacteria in the Mongoose’s saliva, which can lead to several serious infections.
After this early morning discovery, my sliding door has remained closed while no one is in the living room! I certainly do not want to be part of any war between my Poe and a stray Mongoose that sniffs out a possible prey or opponent, but above all, I hope they stay out of his, and my way!

Many years ago on the farm, I had befriended a young otter down at the river, but a friend took the cake, as he had a pet mongoose. You are wise to keep Poe inside, as a bunch of mongooses, could seriously damage him. The question is how to keep the mongooses out of the garden. I will ask around a bit.

I will appreciate that Zac, I am very concerned as they have been seen in neighbouring properties as well, so must live somewhere close by. I saw one going into a stormwater drain, and then come out again. Arthur put in quite a system to collect rainwater. There are two massive soak pits right at the bottom of the garden. We often used to joke and say that they could act as bomb shelters! I doubt they could have made that their home though as all the stormwater ends up in there and they would have drowned by now ;)
But seriously, I would love to know what to do to keep them out.
That article also mentions that they can be kept as pets and be trained. Not my idea of a pet though!
Poe is a hunter, both cats and mongooses have a heightened sense of smell, so must have encountered each other. Poe would not stand a chance against a whole pack of them!
You are right when you say that they have a very sensitive smelling action. Some say that one must mix castor oil with water in a spray bottle and spray along the garden's borders. Others say that one most plant garlic, as it all has to do with the smelling system of the animals. Apparently even snakes don't like the smell and they stay away. One can only try !LOLZ

Thank you Zac, I'll be planting garlic and garlic chives around Poe's territory. My friend who lived 2 houses down the road said about 50 of them came running down their driveway one day, and tried attacking their dog! They apparently live in an undeveloped area in the complex next to their house!
Something will have to be done as they'll just keep on multiplying. They're super fast so I think capturing them would be near impossible!
A good idea to try out methinks.
Marian reminded me about our experience with about 100 feral cats that we had a problem with, as they inhabited an open piece of land below our house in Johannesburg. We called a company and they came out to trap all of the cats in cages and they took them away. The one guy told us that the cats would be sterilized, but they didn't tell us where the cats would go afterwards.
Maybe you guys also have a proper wildlife environmental group that can come and remove the mongooses?

Ahhh, what a lovely introduction to Poe! Phew, the mongoose story sounds quite scary. Hope you're doing well there 😊
Yes, they are vicious when provoked. Poe is wise to stay away. I've only ever had one cat who would stand up to them. My beloved farm cat, Tibbles.
Hi @jusipassetti, so nice seeing the two of you here! Yep, I never realized just how vicious they can be!
I hope Tibbles won the battle?
Yes, thankfully, he did. To be fair, he only had to take on a loner, not as many as 8, lol 😆
Those mongoose are very scary, I used to think they look cute when they run in a row like that but after reading more about them, they certainly ain't cute!
I'm managing thanks @therneau, thankfully the bnb keeps me busy and the interaction with the guests helps a lot.
Hope you're all well❤
Oh my!!! Will they leave if you go out there? Poor Poe, but his granny is loving and very funny in print, he's lucky there.
Haha @owasco, I don't I'll even stand by an open window if I see them, I'm too much of a ninny!
They seems to be a nasty bunch😒
It is a great teaching about love and waiting for a grandchild. As I read I was able to refresh myself with that love for Poe. Truly that visitor looks strong, this cat is very smart, he managed to get them to see the one who was stressing him out. Good thing it wasn't part of his breakfast. I hope you get that news of being grandparents soon. big hugs!
Thank you @lisfabian, I hope to still become a grandma, but the kids don't seem to be in any hurry😉
It sounds like the mongoose will kill and eat just about any animal🙈
First of all I want to wish you the best and I hope you have recovered. Tell you that your Poe is very beautiful, and the story you tell us is very interesting. Cats are very intelligent almost like dogs. I have a friend who says that the cat knows when and where its owner has an ailment. I don't know if this is true but it seems so. But watch out for bites and scratches. I tell that every day to my daughter @nanixxx that her cat has scratched her several times. Wash well and heal the wound. I hope you tell me how her recovery is going. Me too my grandson left me his pet jicotea to take care of. That's how we mothers and grandmothers are. Have a nice evening. And nice week.🌹🥰
Thank you so much for the good wishes @mamani, I'm feeling a whole lot better!
Your friend is right, apparently dogs and cats can smell certain illnesses. They definitely have a sixth sense.
A cat bite can be quite serious, one needs a tetanus injection (I think it lasts 5 years) as well as antibiotics. The problem is their teeth are razor sharp and full of bacteria (same as the mongoose) so they bite deeply. I was shocked to hear that the ligaments of a friend's hand became so infected from a cat bite, and was totally destroyed. He had to undergo surgery to have a ligament transplant, it's taken a long time to regain the use of his hand.
Yes, us Moms often become "foster-moms", not so😉
Have a great week further.
🌹♥️ Good morning, nice Monday.
Have not seen a mongoose in at least 4 years, busy road, development they no longer wander through the garden.
Poor little Poe adjusting to life changes, the cat at least is warning you of danger with strange behaviour.

It's very worrying as there's so many of them and my son sent me another link about a disease that they are passing onto humans. Poe's routine has been totally thrown out!
The do carry a number of different diseases, normally very skittish of humans so I would keep and eye for Poe at all times. Mongoose might simply be moving through looking for something to eat.
They've not come into our property for the last couple of days, so Poe is starting to relax. They even lifted the stormwater drain covers, and then pooed on the lawn in Poe's domain!
He's not keen to go outside early morning though, unlike before. Poe really is such a good boy, does not even like using his litter box, and wants to do his business outside!
Cats are clever, good he instinctively knows the mongoose are not friendly to remain cautious. Good companion to you if he is settled and prefers your company.
Oh boy, he can be quite demanding, meows at me when I'm busy for too long. He didn't understand why I was constantly on the recliner when I came out of hospital, and he couldn't jump on my lap, he was not a happy chap🥰
Huh!
Well I had to do a bit of Braving (of course) and the Mongoose has many auspicious and exciting mythologies and imaginings attached to it. I think you may have good things headed your way :)
I hope so, need some good things but poor Poe is totally spooked, his whole routine is out.
Keep well Nicky xxx
