The Merry Month of May
If I could make a wish upon a star, it would be that this month will indeed bring better tidings, as April sucked, to put it bluntly!
The aftermath of last month's subtropical depression ISSA, is bringing out the best and the worst in people.
Our friends whose home was sliced in half, had to arrange for 24 hour guarding services, as the thieves were out and got away with copper pipes and who knows what else. Then a young drug addict who everyone on the road knows, was caught by the security guard and promptly arrested. Our friends felt sorry for him and told the police they were not laying charges as they already have enough to deal with.
Now that all the mud has been cleared, the assessors found that their bedrooms, kitchen, and garage is still intact and safe to enter, so they've managed to recover way more of their belongings than they thought at first. The furniture of course has been damaged beyond repair.
They've been using whatever boxes they could get from our local stores and have been packing for the last couple of days already; the big clean-up of these possessions will take place when they move back once their home has been rebuilt as a lot of the stuff still has mud on it. Not having water nor the luxury of time as they need to clear everything out as quickly as possible, makes it near impossible to clean up; this is not a planned move so everything has been done in haste. Fortunately, they could use our garage for storage, but are beyond exhausted!
Talk about perseverence!
They started their Maths tuition classes this afternoon at their rental as a handful of parents were getting impatient; no empathy whatsoever! Most of the other parents have been really supportive, with one set of parents donating new school benches plus a whiteboard!
How different can people be!
More treasures were found at our immediate neighbour's home, like this mate of a lone safety boot that just needed to be cleaned up as it was covered in mud.
Nothing happened to Humpty Dumpty who survived the storm and is now enjoying the gorgeous sunny days and sitting like he's the king of the garden castle!
Our friends enjoyed my homemade bread so much the other day, that I decided to make mock sourdough raisin bread - two little loaves, one for us and the other for them to take to their temporary home.
Nothing like the smell of bread baking and having real butter on a slice of hot bread. Everyone always wants the crust as that is the best, especially when it's just come out of the oven!
I told you just after the storm took place and our friends could enter their garage, how they brought their old freezer over and shared the frozen food between their close friends and us as it would spoil with them not having any power!
I did tell you about that generous act and how it brought tears to my eyes, that these two angels disguised as people, gave me their old freezer that was in their garage. This after thinking they had lost nearly all their belongings! I offered to safe keep it till they move into their rental, but they simply said it's mine to keep and still refuse to take the freezer nor the contents back!
So, we enjoyed tender thick-cut matured beef sirloin steaks courtesy of our dear friends. Seared on a high heat and pan-fried to perfection in garlic and fresh rosemary butter; served with a baked potato swimming in the same butter and topped with cheese, this was a simple but delectable meal. I was way too tired to even think of a salad!
I'm hoping this is going to be a good month now that things are starting to kind of normalize, for our friends at least! Although there are many people displaced, it is heartwarming to hear how the communities are standing together and helping out those in need!
A merry month of May is just what we need!
