Surviving the Holidays

While the rest of the world were celebrating the end of a difficult year in anticipation of a fresh new year, filled with possibilities, we were doing double duty - guests in our bnb units and the kids visiting.

The Three Men in my Life
20221231_190750.jpg

Our oldest son celebrated his last Christmas and New Year as a citizen of the country of his birth, in true South African fashion, a traditional braai (bbq) -
Garlic, fresh Rosemary & Lemon juice marinated Lamb Chops with his own blend of braai spice, Boerewors which is our traditional sausage spiced with coriander, black pepper, cloves, and nutmeg, Pap - a maize meal crumbly side dish, similar to Polenta, served with a mild version of spicy Chakalaka, and crusty Garlic bread.

Our son will be leaving our shores for the land of tulips, windmills, canals, wooden clogs, cheese markets, bicycles, canals, and bridges - the Netherlands of course.
We will miss him and his gal sooo much, no more jumping into the car at a whim for the six-hour trip, but we know that we will see them at least once a year, sometimes more often as they're already planning a trip for us in May so we can all celebrate my big birthday in style amongst the tulips!

The kids left some boxes of belongings they've not been able to sell, and which they hand-picked for Mom and Dad to use or give to friends. We'll be driving up next week to sift through the rest and bring more boxes down, donate some up there, and go and say goodbye when they fly off across the waters.

Loot

My dining room looked like a shoe shop, this was my loot, my neighbour went home with even more as I don't do heels anymore. I'm looking forward to the boxes of kitchenware as they have some really good quality stuff that I'll definitely use.

Poe the Hunter

Poe has started hunting - my garden birds being the prey! They will be even more skittish now with a large predator waiting to pounce on them!
We are not friends right now as he killed a little garden bird, judging from the trail of feathers, blood and innards I found in my passage. The little bird is nowhere to be seen.
Poe is well-fed if anyone wants to know, so really has no reason to look for food!
I just hope he doesn't bring any creepy crawlies like snakes inside, as there are some in the garden, but they stay out of sight, so Poe had better not disturb them!

Acrobatics

Hubby did some acrobatics yesterday afternoon when he tripped on the top step and fell heavily on his left side taking a huge chunk of skin off his arm which took the brunt of the fall, bruising the top of his ribcage in the process. Well, I hope it's just bruising! Mister refused to go the doctor, but flinches every time he coughs, so I do not know what's happening inside. It's especially concerning as he only recently had a procedure done. He gave us all a huge fright, unlike him to fall so I teased him and said he just did it hoping the kiddos will stay longer :)

Early morning goodbyes

The first departure was at 4:30 AM, so guess who's going to fall asleep halfway through a series tonight!

I should be as fresh as a daisy tomorrow if I have my coffee at a more civilized time, and if hubby's injury indeed is only a bruise!

Insurance

I took out Hive insurance by powering down for two weeks, hence no Hive PUD for me on the first day of this year...

Unlike in the past, January bookings in our BnB are few and far apart following reports that our city beach waters have unacceptably high e.coli levels, a legacy of the April mudslides that damaged sewerage systems. Yes, you heard right, almost nine months later and there's been hardly any progress with regard to repairing these and other basic services.
This is affecting tourism in our city in a big way, but I think I've spoken of that before, so I'll just zip my mouth!

For now, I'm holding onto my Hive, just in case bookings do not pick up.

I am the eternal optimist though, so even though things are quiet we are starting to get the odd booking.

Now that things have calmed down on the home front, I hope to be sitting here talking to you more often, I've suffered hectic Hive withdrawal symptoms during this busy holiday season. There's no place like this to offload and say just what I feel, hoping someone out there is listening!

The family and the food look great, the shoes look great and the feathers don't look great :)
Hubby might have hurt something inside, especially when he coughs and it hurts. Sounds like a cracked rib to me, or even a torn something. It will be wise for him to see a doctor.
Sad about the polluted beaches and hope that your B&B bookings will pick up soon.

They say that when a new year starts badly, the rest of the year will be good. I hope for your sake it is the truth my friend.

Thank you my friend, hope the new year treats you and Marian very well!
Hubby has finally agreed to go to the doc tomorrow as it's still very painful to get up & turn when lying down, I agree with you, it can't just be a bruise!
As for the Poe saga, I'm not happy as I love my birds!

Thank you for the kind wishes Lady Lizzie.
Great news that he agreed to see a doctor, as at our age one cannot take chances.
Shame yes, but cats are natural hunters, even if we don't like it.

You were right, hubby indeed has a slight fracture on his one rib, so it's anti-inflammatories, pain killers and rest. They also put a special dressing on his arm, needs to be changed every third day!

Ah! what a relief you should feel, as at last it was diagnosed and now treated.
I have had a few broken ribs in my lifetime and it is not a pleasant experience to walk around with plaster from the hips to under the arm pits.
Luckily a slight fracture will heal quicker.

The dressings are also a good thing as they keep infections away and they promote healing.

Oh my word, broken ribs sound even worse, that must be really painful and the plaster terribly uncomforable!
He's not one to complain so it must be very painful! He now realizes it's not just a bruise like he wanted to believe.
As a diabetic he has to be extra careful with any wound, we'll see how it's doing when we change the dressing tomorrow.
Thank you for the advice, that's what made me go ahead & make the appointment without consulting with him as I knew he would have said no!
You menfolk can be very stubborn at times😉

Sure was, and it seems that your hubby and I have a few things in common, as my stock answer to any mishaps is; I am fine!

I just felt prodded by the Spirit to warn you and I am now so glad that I did and let's just hope that the dressings will help the wound to heal. Marian dropped a boiling kettle on her foot some years ago and the skins came off. Not a mark today as I continued to dress her foot with some medical gauze dressings that was developed for burns.

So I hope that they gave you the correct dressings that will prevent inflammations of any sort.

Take care and we pray for you guys.

Thank you my friend, you're right that you were prodded to give that advice as I woke up in the middle of the night and made that appointment online so he couldn't stop me!
We took the dressing off today and the wound is looking clean, so it's another 3 dressings after this.
Thank you, blessings to you and Marian 🙏

Great news and likewise the Spirit also prodded you to make the appointment, and it all went smooth.
I forgot to ask, did they strap hubby's rib cage?

I hope your husband's fall is nothing serious but it's good to have him seen by a doctor. I imagine that apart from the tiredness, you have your heart a little squeezed by your son's upcoming move.
And gosh, Poe is quite the hunter, poor plucked birdie :(
I hope bookings will improve these days. Big hugs 🥰

I want a BBQ now!
Interesting to see that Poe is all settled and becoming the local hunter!

I was not happy with Poe so will be buying him a very colourful collar with a loud bell so my little garden birds are warned. He's super fast though. Sleeping like a baby here all day, must be dreaming about his next prey :)

YES! That lemon juice trick is the BOMB for lamb chops. No complicated bbq sauce required! I use fresh lemon juice, rosemary, garlic, black pepper, olive oil, coarse salt, and olive oil. Magnificent!

I must add olive oil next time, that must definitely do the final trick! I totally agree that this simple lemon juice marinade still is the best!
Happy New Year to you @clairemobey 😊

I've been thinking about you, hoping that all is well. It is such a hardship leaving the country and I have to say, I did it to my parents for years and years, but, did come back every year. xoo

I hope you are feeling okay about it. ❤️

Thank you my friend! The more I see things falling apart with government not governing, the happier I am for them! I'd feel better if our younger son also gets the opportunity to leave as we can always visit them wherever they are knowing their future is secure 🙏
