Nostalgic - Tasting A&W After Decades with My Parents
What a nostalgic feeling!
I remembered when I was little, A&W is a special treat, just like KFC but we get to have it once every fortnight when we behave well at home and mom will take us to visit close-by at dad's work place.
At the time, A&W was only famous with Coney Dog, Burgers and the famous waffle with vanilla ice-cream.
As dad is the main breadwinner of the family in an era of a small town, fast food is actually a luxury compared to as the cheapest food compared to US in the 21st century.
A&W itself has its ups and downs in Malaysia; where my hometown once had a few more, now it only has 1 in the busiest shopping malls in my hometown (for it teamed up with a hotel beside)
But I didn't get this set inside the hometown; in fact, I didn't have this for many years and pretty much could go without, not because I cannot get them, but there was a time A&W's quality in the Capital city of Malaysia was so bad and soggy, I didn't bothered to go grab it anymore.
Then while on our way back from my hometown to the Capital city with the rented car (you can know all about it here why I decided to rent a car this time instead) we decided to pre-anticipate a possible upcoming jam and decided to have breakfast along the way at the Tapah rest stop since we left the town at 7:30am.
Realising that I parked the car a little too far from the food court (but closer to the rest rooms), we decided to head over to the nostalgic restaurant we once had when I was a kid; then to realise that it now had a "face-lift" for its menu, trying to compete with the rest of the fast food chains in Malaysia, with "additional savory versions" in the morning, with the addition of mash eggs, curry (chili) chicken chunk sauce, and 2 types of sausages along from the waffle with sweet sauce.
I am not certain if this is a Perak thing (where food is very much particular for Perak-ians), or the services are much better these days.
The waffle is fresher and I can literally see the staff making an extra waffle when another person ordered first.
Maybe they have a slightly different policy or the person handling the counter is wiser. The Petaling Jaya State original oldest A&W branch had a really soggy waffle and it doesn't look fresh at all when I last had it.
However the sausages are a little too chewy for seniors without full set of teeth. I had to make extra tiny slices of sausage bits for her while my dad had mayo mashed egg with ham slice.
The mash egg wasn't the best. I think it missed out the slight peppery and salt addition to it.
The waffle itself was a tad little crunchier than the old waffle version, but served with actual butter and syrup and additional 2 savory sides, I can't complain too much.
Overall for breakfast sets, I think this costs cheaper than McDonald's breakfast set. If they could find a way to make the sausages less overly chewy, then it is a decent happy breakfast meal.
But that's not all from this trip.
How many times do children who are adult in a sandwich nation season earn enough for themselves and treat their elderly parents with a quiet breakfast these days since the pandemic happened?
Knowing some of my friends / peers lost their opportunity due to the Covid pandemic robbed off their parents' lives, I find this as a privilege to have a quiet meal, away from the buzzling busy surviving city, properly dine-in experience (since the pandemic started) with not too overly crowded environment.
One thing I should complement A&W is that, it sure has a strong coffee despite it came out from a "vending machine" type. I think I have seen a similar one in Burger King Malaysia and probably this beverage service managed to strike a deal with these 2 fast food chains.
I am not certain how KFC, but McDonalds do have their special brewed section McCafe, where though I hardly go for their fast food meals, their coffee is still a one a blue moon treat for me.
How about you?
Does your country has this fast food chain? I know it is hardly around world wide now and the last I know other than Malaysia is @ace108 mentioning to me that there's still 1 store left in Singapore.

I have seen quite frequently this restaurant when I was still living in the big city but I was not able to dine in it. IF I may ask, how was the food at A&W?
Well the Capital city's quality couldn't match the Tapah one for sure; but I could be wrong and they have improved their cooking. But if they are using the same sausage for the coney dog, then it has become a little chewier than the olden days where I loved it.
Thank you for the response, have a nice day ahead.
