'Prisoners' by David Villenueve Review: a Story of a father and a detective struggling to find two little girls.
What is it about?
This is the story of Keller Diver (Hugh Jackman) and his family. It all starts on Thanksgiving Day when they visit their friends Franklin (Terrence Howard) and Nancy Birch (Viola Davis) both Families with four members: Mother, Father, oldest son/daughter and the youngest daughters. The two little girls are very good friends since they are almost the same age, the same happens with the older ones Eliza (Zoe Soul) and Ralph (Dylan Minette) who are left in charge of watching the girls when they want to go for a walk on their street. They all go together and the girls start playing on a trailer, Ralph and Eliza immediately stop them and they all go home together. From the first moment the trailer appears we know something strange is going on. Hours later the girls ask the parents if they can go out again and they again make it a condition to go with their siblings. But this time the girls go out alone and without anyone noticing. And that's when the nightmare begins for both families: the girls disappear. The only clue they have to find their little girls is that trailer that was parked in the nearby street, but it turns out that it is no longer parked there. This is when detective Loki (Jake Gylehall) enters the scene, who will be in charge of carrying out the search and investigation to find the whereabouts of both girls: Anna and Joy. By nightfall they have the man driving the trailer: Alex (Paul Dano) and they realize that despite being very suspicious, he is not a kidnapper. When he is released, Keller goes after Alex and kidnaps him. This is how he begins to torture this boy, convinced that he is related to the disappearance of both girls. The tortures to which he is subjected are extremely violent and are shown in a very graphic way. This is when we realize that Keller is a very violent and obsessive man.
Nancy and Franklin are aware of these tortures but decide to turn a blind eye, however they do not participate in all this. A new suspect appears, Bob Taylor (David Dastmalchian) who commits suicide after being caught. I didn't really understand what role this man played in the kidnapping, since he breaks into the Dover's house, when they inspect their house they have several of the girls' clothes stained with blood, and he has an obsession with mazes, he's a very creepy guy. However later he shows us that in his yard they have buried children's mannequins, the blood on the clothes was from pigs and the mazes were copied from a book. So why did he enter the Dover family property? And if he had nothing to do with the kidnapping, why did he have clothes from both girls? In the movie one of the detectives says that he seems to be just pretending something, so why so many connections with the kidnapping? From this point is when the labyrinths appear as an important clue of the case, not only because of Taylor's obsession but also because, while Alex is kidnapped, he tells Keller something related to labyrinths. At the end of the movie Joy appears and says that Keller was in the place where they were kidnapped, and this makes us doubt and is when we wonder if the film will follow that beaten path in which the protagonist has been the bad guy all the time. And don't get me wrong, great films like Shutter Island (2010) Fight Club (1999) and Hide and Seek (2005) have dominated the world of cinema with similar plot twists, but in the case of this film it would not have succeeded as it would be the most obvious way out and the story would lose all the interest it generates from the beginning. After hearing Joy's words, Keller runs away becoming a suspect. And it is when he arrives at Holly's house (Melissa Leo) who is Alex's aunt, and with whom he had already had a conversation before, also at her house. It is then when Keller realizes that his daughter is in that house and that is why Joy said she saw or heard him in the same place where they were confined. This is when Holly reveals to Keller that her husband and she had spent years kidnapping children, Alex being the first, and Bob Taylor being one who managed to escape. Holly locks Keller in a hole in the backyard after shooting him. Here we see Hugh Jackman on screen for the last time. Soon Detective Loki arrives at Holly's house to warn her that she may be in danger as Keller is wanted and dangerous. However she does not open the door and runs into one of the rooms to poison little Anna who is still alive. Loki forces his way into the house after hearing noises and suffers a bullet hit to the side of the head but still shoots and kills her. He sets out to save Anna and they arrive at the emergency room, both wounded. We then see in a newspaper that Alex is reunited with his family and Keller is still missing. It is Loki who reads the newspaper in a hospital room, when both mothers arrive with their daughters to thank the detective. In the final scene, a few days later Loki is in a night with several forensic experts checking the yard of the house but they find nothing, when he is about to leave, he hears a constant beeping and turns to where the hole where Keller is, and that's how the movie ends.
We are given to understand that they find Keller, but that he will still face multiple consequences for torturing an innocent man, since Alex, from the beginning knew he was innocent and the only connection he had to the kidnapping was the trailer and being Holly's "nephew".
My opinion
I really enjoy thrillers and this one had been on my list for a long time. I actually watched it with no idea what it was really about. It grabbed me from the beginning but I had to give myself some pauses due to the strong torture scenes that caused me great anxiety. I must highlight Hugh Jackman's performance, his scenes transmitted fear and discomfort, and isn't that what makes a good actor? For me, performances come to life when they manage to transmit something to me, when they generate a feeling.
I really liked the format in which they are two men, a detective and a father, obsessive and somewhat violent, each in their search for answers to save both girls, and how as the film progresses they seem like enemies although they are realizing almost the same thing at the same time.
Viola Davis as always exceptional, although her screen time is very short.
This movie met my expectations, however there were several loose ends that I think are there more for oversight than to be part of the story. I highly recommend taking the time to watch this film.
