The 5th Avenue Clock, a jewel of time [en/es]
Hello friends of Architecture + Design!
This is my first post of the year in this community so first of all, I want to convey my best wishes for this new year. May it be full of achievements and love for you all. Today I want to show you an architectural jewel that is located on 5th Avenue, near my place of work.
This particular jewel is the Clock Tower located between 10th and 12th Streets. I have long been curious about this colonial construction that rises majestically over the avenue, with a height of approximately 22 meters. Each of its sides displays a clock and at the top is a bell tower, which gives it a unique charm.

Esta es mi primera publicación del año en esta comunidad por tanto en primer lugar, quiero transmitirles mis mejores deseos para este nuevo año. Que esté lleno de logros y amor para todos ustedes. Hoy les quiero mostrar una joya arquitectónica que se encuentra en la 5ta Avenida, cerca de mi lugar de trabajo.
Esta joya en particular es la Torre del reloj ubicada entre las calles 10 y 12. Desde hace tiempo he sentido curiosidad por esta construcción colonial que se alza majestuosamente sobre la avenida, con una altura de aproximadamente 22 metros. Cada uno de sus lados muestra un reloj y en la parte superior se encuentra un campanario, lo que le confiere un encanto único.
During my visit, I had the opportunity to speak with a lady who was sitting at the foot of the tower. She turned out to be the caretaker of the clock, and has been dedicated to its care for 18 years. Although I could not access the interior or ascend, as it is forbidden for security reasons due to the presence of personalities and strategic places in the vicinity, she gave me valuable information about the construction.
Durante mi visita, tuve la oportunidad de hablar con una señora que estaba sentada a los pies de la torre. Resultó ser la cuidadora del reloj, y lleva 18 años dedicada a su cuidado. Aunque no pude acceder al interior ni ascender, ya que está prohibido por motivos de seguridad debido a la presencia de personalidades y lugares estratégicos en las inmediaciones, me dio valiosa información sobre la construcción.
The tower is built of Jaimanite stone and is structurally sound. However, its internal mechanism, designed to synchronize the music every quarter hour and ring the bells according to schedule, stopped working three years ago. Although a repair was made 12 years ago after a long period of inactivity, a part broke during the pandemic and has yet to be replaced. According to the caregiver, the mechanism is very delicate and sensitive.
I think it would be important to recover this mechanism, since the tower is an emblematic symbol of the area and the only one of its kind in Cuba. Its melody and chimes, when the clock is in operation, envelop a wide perimeter of the locality, creating an enchanting experience when walking along the avenue. In addition, the structure of the tower is visually stunning.
La torre está construida con piedra jaimanita y es estructuralmente sólida. Sin embargo, su mecanismo interno, diseñado para sincronizar la música cada cuarto de hora y tocar las campanas según el horario, dejó de funcionar hace tres años. Aunque se hizo una reparación hace 12 años tras un largo periodo de inactividad, durante la pandemia se rompió una pieza que aún no ha sido sustituida. Según la cuidadora, el mecanismo es muy delicado y sensible.
Creo que sería importante recuperar este mecanismo, ya que la torre es un símbolo emblemático de la zona y la única de su tipo en Cuba. Su melodía y campanadas, cuando el reloj está en funcionamiento, envuelven un amplio perímetro de la localidad, creando una experiencia encantadora al caminar por la avenida. Además, la estructura de la torre es visualmente impactante.
The tower is surrounded by circular walls that are often used as benches, where passersby rest or enjoy the shade of the trees that adorn the avenue. In addition, around the tower there are steps to reach the base of the tower that is located at the center of the round space, which often becomes a play area for children.
La torre está rodeada de muros en forma circular que a menudo se utilizan como bancos, de la donde los transeúntes descansan o disfrutan de la sombra de los árboles que adornan la avenida, Además al rededor se alzan unos escalones para llegar a la base de la torre que se encuentra al centro de todo ese espacio redondo, que en muchas ocasiones suele convertirse en área de juego para los mas pequeños.
The design of the tower is square and rectilinear, maintaining a constant diameter throughout its height. However, on the belfry side, four balconies protrude with ornate ornaments attached to the cornices. Each balcony has metal railings, and on each side of the tower there are three openings to these balconies, separated by columns.
El diseño de la torre es cuadrado y rectilíneo, manteniendo un diámetro constante a lo largo de su altura. Sin embargo, en el lado del campanario sobresalen cuatro balcones con adornos adosados a las cornisas. Cada balcón tiene barandillas metálicas, y a cada lado de la torre hay tres aberturas a estos balcones, separadas por columnas.
Above the main opening facing the balconies are clocks, which mark the passage of time minute by minute with Roman numerals. Just above the clocks, around the base of the upper cornice, is a simple and beautiful checkered border, with 7 ornaments on each side. The roof of the tower is square, but features a drop from the center, giving it a charming design. Personally, I love the perfect straightness of its walls.
Sobre el hueco principal que da a los balcones están los relojes, que marcan el paso del tiempo minuto a minuto con números romanos. Justo encima de los relojes, alrededor de la base de la cornisa superior, hay una sencilla y hermosa cenefa a cuadros, con 7 adornos por cada lado. El tejado de la torre es cuadrado, pero presenta una caída desde el centro, lo que le confiere un diseño encantador. Personalmente, me encanta la perfecta rectitud de sus muros.

Que bonita historia, me hiciste recordar las campanadas del reloj de una iglesia que hay por acá en Pinar del Río, las 3 de la tarde es la que más he escuchado con frecuencia. Espero logren rescatar esa pieza faltante, para que la torre siga cantando a la vez que va marcando el tiempo. Saludos 👋

Greetings friend, even though you were not able to climb the tower, you had the joy of talking with this beautiful lady who gave you excellent information about this great architectural work, when I visit the historic center of the city I live and meet people who know I love to ask about part of the history, I even think I ask a lot of questions heh heh, it's nice to know the history that ancient buildings keep, they have a lot to tell.

It is very interesting everything you describe about the tower, I also use that way on a daily basis and I did not know that there was a person in charge of its care. The clock is a symbol on 5th avenue.

There is a place similar to this in Indonesia. We call it the 'Clock Tower' because it is really big. It's in Bukit Tinggi and it makes me imagine how beautiful this place is.

What a beautiful tower. They are buildings with a lot of history and it is certainly nice to see these places like this.
You know there was a tower like this here, not a clock tower, but it was a tower where people climbed. Well, access to this tower was also prohibited because it did not have security as such and one day a person climbed up and jumped from there, taking his own life. Since then, access to the tower has been forbidden to the public.
I sincerely hope they can repair it soon, it is a building with too much history to remain damaged.
That's right friend, it's part of our heritage, we have always had a caretaker, so a misfortune should not happen like in your town. I would really like the music thing to be resolved, it brings joy to the whole place.
