Trees XIX - Oil Painting

I was re-organizing the studio and came across this painting which forms a part of my Tree series. It is oils painted atop a thin layer of silver metal (aluminium) applied to a wood panel box.

Because of the transference of the oils, the light is reflected back and gives the painting different qualities depending upon the lighting or the angles you look at it from. Hence it is difficult to photograph and convey the optical effect.

As you can see from the photos below, you can choose to hang it how you please.

I normally paint on canvas rather than wooden panels. I very much like the wooden panels to paint on, but they become impractical after a certain size to ship. And speaking of ships, this is the very reason during the Renaissance that painters switched from painting on wooden panels to canvas. The trend started in Venice, where everything was transported by ship. Large paintings on wooden panels often wouldn't fit on cramped ships. So being a sea faring republic, canvas was something they had plenty of. It had several advantages, in that it was lighter than the wooden panels and could be rolled up for transport. So it was a win.

The Trees series has proven very popular over time, so like the Renaissance paintings of Venice, these artworks have travelled found homes all over the world.
