Rembrandt's Sense of Humour
I found a photography project where they set out to recreate a number of Rembrandt's artworks. Among them was a recreation of self-portrait sketch Rembrandt did of himself.
While he did do a number or glamorous portraits of himself as a younger man, he also at the time spent a fair amount of time in front of the mirror pulling faces and recording them.
Perhaps when we think of Rembrandt we visualize dark sombre paintings, but if you look through the expanse of his work, you will see he also enjoyed life to the full until the tragic death of his beloved wife Saskia.
He was a fine student of the human soul and set out to learn the range of it's expression so that he could express in his artworks and bring them to life. Hence why his works still resonate with so many people today.
We identify ourselves with stories when they move something within us. So Rembrandt set out to move us with his artworks and take us on a journey.
I hope you find this drawing as entertaining as when Rembrandt was fooling around in front of the mirror.
