Anthony van Dyck - self-portrait study
It's been a while, but I'm back with my latest oil painting. This study of Anthony van Dyck's self portrait. This started out as an exercise that I was doing as a demonstration for one of my students.
Van Dyck was a student of Rubens, but left the Netherlands and made his career, in England, finding fame and fortune there.
As part of the exercise we did a value study, where accuracy of details was not the focus, rather the values of light and dark.
The next step was lay the image out on the canvas.
Then comes the blocking in of the colours.
Once everything is in place, perhaps after some checking, there might be minor adjustments to make sure image remains accurate and not distorted.
You can see here it's time to start refining the image and work towards a polished finish.
