Es incomparable e incluso inadmisible, porque cuando estamos hablando de un tema en boga como lo es el de violencia doméstica, no podemos hacer menos que bajarle dos a la felicidad. Necesito comentarles que esta no era mi publicación original, está mañana muy temprano me puse a diseñar en mi mente lo que sería lo que les traía para ustedes, y era un vídeo-reseña que quería traerles para mi gran regreso a solas frente a las cámaras, pero no pude hacerlo. El video está grabado, está allí, duré 20 minutos hablando de algo que no era que no sentía, sino que tenía muchos sentimientos en la garganta que no pude aflorar, que no permitían ver a la Natalia apasionada que están acostumbrados a ver o escuchar. Es por esta razón que decidí dejar todo por escrito, es más fácil cuando se trata de casos como el que les traigo hoy.

I need to tell you that this was not my original post, this morning very early in the morning I started to design in my mind what I was bringing to you, and it was a video review that I wanted to bring to you for my big comeback alone in front of the cameras, but I couldn't do it. The video is recorded, it's there, I lasted 20 minutes talking about something that was not that I didn't feel, but that I had a lot of feelings in my throat that I couldn't bring out, that didn't allow you to see the passionate Natalia that you are used to seeing or hearing. It is for this reason that I decided to put it all down in writing, it is easier when it comes to cases like the one I bring you today.

MAID: LAS COSAS POR LIMPIAR

La Historia

Es probable que la sinopsis la hayan leído por aquí varias veces, pero no está demás volver a contarles de Alexandra, o Alex, es una madre que una noche escapa con su bebé de casi 3 años luego de un ataque de irá de su novio Sean, ella sale en medio de la noche, con solo unos pocos dólares en los bolsillos y sin un sitio donde dormir más que su carro. Luego de que un policía la encontrara en ese estado le sugirió que acudiera a servicios sociales. En este sitio intentan ayudarla, pero tiene en contra que ella no puso ninguna denuncia de abuso doméstico en contra de su novio porque el no le puso un dedo encima. Así que buscan otro medio para que Alex y Maddy puedan obtener la ayuda. La única manera posible fue la de conseguir un pequeño empleo limpiando casas, y es por esto que la serie se llama MAID.

La serie está basada en hechos reales y está adaptada del libro Best seller de Stephanie Land "Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay, and a Mother's Will to Survive", y fue producida por los creadores de Shameless y Promising Young Woman: Tom Ackerley y Margot Robbie, entre muchos otros. Si ya han visto la miniserie estarán de acuerdo conmigo en que es increíble, y que toda la puesta en escena es majestuosa. Así que en terminos de producción no me extrañaría ver este título en las grandes premios que estarán a punto de empezar solo n un par de meses.

The Plot

You've probably read the synopsis here a few times, but it's worth telling you again about Alexandra, or Alex, a mother who escapes one night with her almost 3-year-old baby after an attack by her boyfriend Sean, she leaves in the middle of the night, with only a few dollars in her pocket and nowhere to sleep but in her car. After a policeman found her in this state, he suggested she go to social services. There they try to help her, but she has a problem with the fact that she did not file a domestic abuse report against her boyfriend because he did not lay a finger on her. So they look for another way for Alex and Maddy to get help. The only possible way was to get a small job cleaning houses, which is why the series is called MAID.

The series is based on true events and is adapted from Stephanie Land's best-selling book "Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay, and a Mother's Will to Survive", and was produced by the creators of Shameless and Promising Young Woman: Tom Ackerley and Margot Robbie, among many others. If you've already seen the miniseries you'll agree with me that it's incredible and that all the staging is majestic. So in terms of production, I wouldn't be surprised to see this title in the big awards that are about to start in just a couple of months.

La actuación:

Creo que es injuusto llamar a este espacio "la actuación" cuando deberíamos darle el crédito a "las actuaciones" de las grandes actrices que aquí aparecen y empezaremos nombrando a su protagonista: Alex, interpretada por Margaret Qualley a quien a su corta edad ya es una veterena de la pantalla grande y chica. Estuvo presente en las 3 temporadas de The leftovers y a quien también vimos (y a sus pies) en Once upon a time... In Hollywood de Quentin Tarantino, en la que interpretó a la adolescente Pussycat, quien fuera parte de la injfame famila Manson y que coqueteó con Brad Pitt en pantalla. Margaret nos muestra en su increíble actuación todo lo que una madre abusada con deseos de salir adelante debería mostrar, una sensiblidad típica de una madre abnegada, pero que muestra las garras como una leona cuando se trata de batallar por su hija. Los momentos de debilidad por sus situaciones mentales son dignas de hacer mención, porque ella nos otorgó de todo, y llegaron a haber momentos que incluso se comportaba como una verdadera perra odiosa, sobretodo cuando de su madre se trataba, y esto fue lo que más me gustó de toda la miniserie, eran personajes reales, no eran buenos ni malos, solo eran consecuencia de sus pasados.

The acting:

I think it's unfair to call this space "the acting" when we should be giving credit to "the performances" of the great actresses featured here and we'll start by naming its lead: Alex, played by Margaret Qualley who at her young age is already a veteran of the big and small screen. She was present in all 3 seasons of The Leftovers and who we also saw (and at her feet) in Once upon a time... In Hollywood by Quentin Tarantino, in which she played the teenage Pussycat, who was part of the infamous Manson family and who flirted with Brad Pitt on screen. Margaret's incredible performance shows us everything that an abused mother with a desire to move forward should show, a sensitivity typical of a selfless mother, but who shows her claws like a lioness when it comes to fighting for her daughter. The moments of weakness for her mental situations are worth mentioning because she gave us everything, and there were moments when she even behaved like a real hateful bitch, especially when it came to her mother, and this was what I liked the most of the whole miniseries, they were real characters, they were not good or bad, they were just a consequence of their pasts.

Y como ya nombré a la madre de Alex, también debo hacer esta mención honorífica a una actriz que no solo nos dió una gran actuación, sino que también nos demostró que hay grandes e increíbles regresos. Este fue el caso de Andie MacDowell, esta grandiosa actriz a quién vimos mucho en las 90's y que hizo una gran actuación en 4 bodas y un funeral junto a Hugh Grant y en Groundhound day junto a Bill Murray. En esta oportunidad interpreta a Laura, la madre de Alex, una artista de espiritu libre que vive junto a su novio mucho menor que ella en un pequeño trailer. Laura sufre de un trastorno bipolar bastante severo y los cambios de humor son tan notorios como increíbles por la gran actuación que nos demostró Andie, esto es un gran regreso, y un merecido aplauso de pie no solo por la gran actuación, sino por la química madre-hija que nos dieron este par de grandes actrices.

And as I already named Alex's mother, I must also make this honorable mention to an actress who not only gave us a great performance but also showed us that there are incredible comebacks. This was the case of Andie MacDowell, this great actress who we saw a lot in the '90s and who gave a great performance in 4 weddings and a funeral with Hugh Grant and in Groundhound day with Bill Murray. This time she plays Laura, Alex's mother, a free-spirited artist who lives with her much younger boyfriend in a small trailer. Laura suffers from severe bipolar disorder and the mood swings are as noticeable as they are incredible because of the great performance Andie gave us, this is a great comeback, and a well-deserved standing ovation not only for the great performance but for the mother-daughter chemistry that this pair of great actresses gave us.

Y si de menciones hablamos, no puedo dejar de lado la mejor actuación de todas: la de Maddy, la pequeña hija de Alex que es una actriz nata y completamente encantadora. La amé durante toda la miniserie y que es necesario recalcar: apareció en todas las escenas. Me encantó.

And if we're talking about mentions, I can't leave out the best performance of all: that of Maddy, Alex's little daughter, who is a born actress and completely charming. I loved her throughout the whole mini-series and it must be said: she was in every scene. I loved her.

Abuso

Durante el tiempo que Alex estuvo haciendo esto, conoció gente que la iba ayudando a conocer y a superar su situación, así como también a tener en cuenta que no necesitas que nadie te ponga un dedo encima para que pueda ser considerado abuso o violencia doméstica. La violencia doméstica va más allá de los golpes, aquí entran los insultos, los gritos y el abuso psicológigo. Quitarte tus tarjetas, no permitir que te comuniques con nadie, no dejarte ver a tus amigos, desestimar a tus amigos y familiares. No dejarte usar el teléfono, no ir a ningún lado sin su compañía, llevar las directrices de tu vida sin que tengas derecho a levantar la voz, también es abuso. Y esto es algo que la serie enfatiza muy bien, porque en el momneto en que llevas esto a un juzgado lo pueden desestimar porque no hay las suficientes leyes que lo consideren como violencia de género. Muchas causas en pro del abuso y la violencia doméstica están ahora mismo luchando por estas reinvindicaciones. Lo mejor sería documentarse y ver si alguna de nosotras está sufriendo y buscar ayuda apropiada para salir de esto.

Abuse

During the time Alex was doing this, she met people who were helping her to learn about and overcome her situation, as well as to realize that you don't need anyone to lay a finger on you for it to be considered abuse or domestic violence. Domestic violence is more than just hitting, it's about insults, shouting, and psychological abuse. Taking away your cards, not allowing you to communicate with anyone, not letting you see your friends, dismissing your friends and family. Not letting you use the phone, not going anywhere without their company, running your life without you having the right to raise your voice, is also abuse. And this is something that the series emphasizes very well because the moment you take this to court it can be dismissed because there are not enough laws that consider it gender violence. Much domestic violence and abuse causes are fighting for these claims right now. It would be best to do some research and see if any of us are suffering and seek appropriate help to get out of it.

El abusador no va a llegar a una primera cita a ofrecer una bofetada, siempre será el más encantador de todo, un tipo increíble, todo un caballero, te hará sentir como una reina, sobretodo si ve a una mujer sensible y agradecida, ahí ve el manipuilador a la mujer perfecta para hacer con ella lo que quiera. La primera vez que ataca no serán más que unos gritos, nada de que preocuparse, los gritos irán subiendo y ya cuando es demasiado tarde estás en una telaraña de la que no puedes escapar. Y esto pasa en cuestión de años, paulatinamente, por eso es que no es solo: "agarra a tus hijos y vete". En eso es que podemos actuar nosotras, ayudar con nuestras palabras, a que tengan un sitio seguro, a una amiga segura y demostrar que tenemos empatía.

The abuser is not going to arrive on a first date to offer a slap, he will always be the most charming of all, an incredible guy, a real gentleman, he will make you feel like a queen, especially if he sees a sensitive and grateful woman, there the manipulator sees the perfect woman to do what he wants with her. The first time he attacks, it will be nothing more than a few screams, nothing to worry about, the screams will increase and when it is too late you are in a web form which you cannot escape. And this happens in a matter of years, gradually, that's why it's not just: "grab your children and go". That's where we can act, help with our words, help them to have a safe place, a safe friend, and show that we have empathy.

Empatía:

Amo esta palabra, la empatía hace de todo un lugar bonito, que los seres humanos comprendan el sufrimiento del otro, lo abrace, le de valor para seguir adelante. Muchas mujeres somos empáticas con nuestro género, estamos allí para escuchar a la otra, existe sororidad, y la sororidad puede cambiar el mundo, eso de estarr convirtiendonos en enemigas es la ridículez más grande que puede existir. Esta miniserie también habla de esto, de que no sabes quien puede estar allí para darte la mano, quien puede ayudarte en los momentos difíciles, y que incluso nosotras también podemos haber ayudado a una hermana en algún momento difícil.

Empathy:

I love this word, empathy makes everything a beautiful place, that human beings understand the suffering of the other, embrace them, give them the courage to go on. Many women are empathetic with our gender, we are there to listen to each other, there is a sorority, and sorority can change the world, that we are making enemies is the most ridiculous thing that can exist. This miniseries also talks about this, that you don't know who can be there to give you a hand, who can help you in difficult moments, and that even we can also have helped a sister in a difficult moment.

Pero, y sí, existe un gran pero dentro de la empatía, y es que al ser tan sensibles, las victimas de violencia doméstica son las más empáticas de todas, incluso sobreponiendo la vida del abusador por encima de la propia. Siempre piensa en lo mal que la está pasando el otro y se lanza encima esa carga, que no es suya, y que nadie debería soportar, y en la mayoría de los casos, es la razón por la que siempre vuelven.

But, yes, there is a big but within empathy, and that is that because they are so sensitive, victims of domestic violence are the most empathetic of all, even putting the abuser's life above their own. They always think about how bad the other person is having a bad time and throw on themselves this burden, which is not theirs, and which no one should have to bear, and in most cases, this is the reason why they always come back.

El Fondo:

Si hubo algo que me tocó el corazón fue la demostración en la serie e lo que es "El fondo" ese lugar oscuro y profundo en los que los que hemos sufrido de depresión caemos, y me impresionó mucho es es tal cual como lo mostraron en la serie. Nos olvidamos de arreglarnos y de cuidar a los demás, solo queremos estar inmóviles en un sitio mientras que nuestra mente no ve la luz. Solemos andar como autómatas por todo el lugar haciendo lo que nuestro cuerpo nos deja hacer; sin ganas, sin fuerzas... Realmente estuve tocada con estas escenas de la que no les diré absolutamente nada.

The Deep:

If there was one thing that touched my heart it was the demonstration in the series of what is "The Deep" that deep dark place that those of us who have suffered from depression fall into, and I was very impressed it is just as it was shown in the series. We forget to look after ourselves and others, we just want to stay still in one place while our mind doesn't see the light. We tend to walk like automatons all over the place doing what our body lets us do; without desire, without strength... I was touched by these scenes of which I will tell you absolutely nothing.

Superando:

La superación depende de nosotros mismos, solo hay que dar el paso, lanzarse a la nada y dejar todo atrás, cortar todo tipo de comunicación y seguir adelante. No importa de que manera sea, así sea lavando los baños más desagradables y asquerosos a un costo inferior al legal, solo por darle un poco de comida a tus hijos. Durante ese camino podrás conocer a personas grandiosas que te ayudarán, personas nuevas y personas conocidas dispuestas a ayudarte. Y hacer cosas, moverte, trabajar, caminar, escribir tal y como ya lo hacemos, porque vale la pena vivir, y más si lo hacemos por alguien más que salió de tu cuerpo. Hay motivos para seguir, siempre podemos superar las barreras y salir adelante. Recuerden que esta serie es basada en las memorias de alguien real, alguien que hizo un best seller y que pasó por mucho. Tal vez nosotros la pasamos mejor y sigue siendo todo cuesta arriba, pero lo podemops superar. Verdaderamente lo podemos superar. No permitan que nadie les diga lo que tienen que hacer, y sobretodo, jamás permitan que alguien les diga que se queden en un sitio solo porque les conviene.

Overcoming:

Overcoming is up to us, we just have to take the plunge, throw ourselves into nothingness and leave it all behind, cut off all communication and move on. It doesn't matter how, even if it's washing the most disgusting and filthy toilets at less than legal cost, just to give your kids some food. Along the way, you will meet great people who will help you, new people, and people you know who are willing to help you. And do things, move, work, walk, write as we already do, because life is worth living, and even more so if we do it for someone else who came out of your body. There are reasons to go on, we can always overcome barriers and move forward. Remember that this series is based on the memoirs of someone real, someone who made a best seller and went through a lot. Maybe we've had a tougher time and it's still all uphill, but we can get through it. We really can get through it. Don't let anyone tell you what to do, and above all, don't ever let anyone tell you to stay in a place just because it's convenient for you.

A todas las mujeres de Hive que estén pasando por un caso similar, les recomiendo que vean esta miniserie que las hará llorar mucho, tal como me pasó a mí. Y a los hombres también se los recomiendo, no es una serie sensiblera rosa, es real, no muestra a los hombres como los malos, los muestra como personajes atormentados, y esta también es una realidad de las que espero poder hacerle mención en otra oportunidad. Seamos empáticos, pero de verdad, ayudemos, escuchemos, demos nuestro apoyo a cualquiera que esté pasando por esto para que no termine siendo una víctima que no pueda hablar más nunca.
