Weekly Battle Challenge: Flight of Thorns
Hello fellow TCG enthusiasts!
This week's battle challenge is focused on Dragons which as many of you know are my favorite group of cards.
If this is the first you are hearing of the Splinterlands 'Share Your Battle!' challenge, check out the official rules and guidelines in this post. Now lets get into this week's challenge.
Card Overview - Dragons - Bloomin Chwala
Edition: UNTAMED / CHAOS
Rarity: RARE / EPIC
Element: DRAGON + WATER
Abilities: FLYING / THORNS+ENRAGE+TRUE STRIKE
Generally, you won't see Bloom being the go to for Dragon decks however, his ability to give all cards flying is incredible for niche rulesets including earthquake and I bought him specifically for that ruleset. I'm also a huge fan of his artwork. The flower lea tied in with his tunic and his enthusiastic reach for the sky lends itself to a very optimistic outlook. His backstory is also fantastic imo and further expands on his eccentric 'nature'.
As for Chwala, he is simply a beast of a card. As a frontline tank with thorns at level 1 he sees an incredibly high win rate and is a must for all decks imo.
Official Lore
BrightonBrighton was an eccentric young man of Shimmer City, the capital of Khymeria. He was always seen as a strange character among the Khymian summoners. In the best times, his peers thought he was simply a distraction from their important studies. In the worst times, his fellow summoners doubted and belittled Brighton’s abilities. They were also put off by the way birds always landed on his hands and shoulders. After just two years studying at the Shimmer summoning school, Brighton decided to leave Khymeria. His loyalty was available to the highest bidder, and that is where the Dragons came in.
The Gloridax cared not for Brighton’s strange idiosyncrasies; what mattered to them was his skills as a summoner. Furthermore, in Gloridax eyes oneness with birds has long been considered a sign of divinity. Brighton’s attraction to birds was quickly noticed by Suam Khepri, Empress of the United Gloridax, who assigned a team of aerial sorcerers to properly train the young man. When Brighton emerged from that training, he could grant the power of flight to any monster under his summoning control.
Chwala
Dawn of the Djinn 4 of 4 - Only a short time after the Djinn were released, most of them were already seeing their elemental captivity as a blessing rather than a curse. They had far greater power than before, now that they were working with the force of the Planet at their backs. Pursuit of power was at the core of Belludae beliefs, so most of them would make small sacrifices for greater power.
The Djinn have not all found one another, and it will be difficult for them to do so since many of them reside in different elements. This is why several of the Djinn have submitted themselves as cards in the Moxian games, so they can connect with their lost brethren. Gradually they will come together to Praetoria as part of the last lines of defense, channeling the power of the Planet into an impenetrable wall to hold back the Chaos Legion.
Context: Regular Ranked match in Gold 3.
Ruleset as follows:
This is a relatively open ruleset with the only real exception being limitation of legendries. Earthquake is less of a limiting factor as there are multiple ways to deal with it and it generally doesn't outright exclude any given card. That said, when looking for a battle for the challenge series, I was explicitly looking for the earthquake modifier as while it does not explicitly restrict cards, it does reward certain cards and players that happen to have global armor or Bloom which is my current dragon summoner of choice (sorry Kitty, you are just too expensive).

Analysis:
When I first saw the field I was honestly expecting a loss. My opponents cards were level 4 across the board with eagle the only exception. Generally a leveled comp like this would just eat through any of the cheaper decks. All of this plus his summoner gave armor to all monsters which is one of the more common ways of dealing with earthquake.
I knew that the match would more or less be decided within the first round. If I could get a few dodges in due to having flight and manage to land my hits to remove their armor, I should be able to weather my opponents high damage long enough for earthquake to finish him off. Note that only Eagle on his side has flight so he was really depending on high damage and a single armor save.
Luckily for me, that is more or less what happened. I snagged some dodges and my backline went to work shredding through all of that armor. Chwala also more than did its share of work absorbing hits and dishing out that beautiful thorn damage.
By Round 4 I had eaten through his melee and guaranteed myself victory.
