Let's Talk Splinterlands - Is Flipping Chaos Legion Packs A Good Strategy?
This next Monday is going to be the biggest sales event for Splinterlands so far. After two rounds of presales Chaos Legion ins finally going to be available for general sale. Everybody has his own strategy for Splinterlands, some already bought their packs in the presale, some only buy the individual cards they need off the market, but one of the strategies I hear very often is to buy a ton of Chaos Legion packs in the general sale and then hold them for flipping later on. So in this article I want to take a closer look at the economic side of that strategy and discuss whether this might be a good strategy or not.
So let's look at the basic numbers first. There are 15,000,000 Chaos Legion packs sold in total at a price point of 4$ each. A bit over 2,000,000 packs have already been sold in the two phases of the presale, leaving 13,000,000 to the general public. On top of that there have been some major purchases by big guilds and pools. I don't have exact numbers on these but let's assume another 2,000,000 packs have been sold that way. That would put us at 11,000,000 packs still for sale on January 17th.
So what would a pack flipping strategy look like? Well the basic idea is to buy up as many packs as you can, hold on to them until Chaos Legion sells out, wait for the pack price to appreciate and then sell them again for profit. There are two factors that make this strategy especially appealing:
- The more packs you buy, the more cards you will get airdropped. Every 1,000,000 packs sold, another card (usually of epic or legendary rarity) is added to all packs still not opened. At the same time, these cards are airdropped to all the people that already have bought packs. Historically these cards are some of the most expensive cards in the game - just check the image below, all these cards have been airdropped during the Untamed era. So even if you'd sell the packs for just as much as you bought them, you'd still basically earn these airdrops for free.
- Each pack you hold in your account awards you with 300 airdrop points. Even with all packs sold this should still account to about 0.025 SPS daily. With 191 airdrops remaining on Monday this would amount to around 4.75 SPS given out till summer. Even at the current price of SPS, which we probably won't stay at once the airdrop ends, this would amount to almost 1$ worth of SPS.
So with these things in mind, it's easy to see that you get these packs for way less than 4$ per pack. You also receive bonus packs if you buy in bulk although you need vouchers to claim them. If you buy 2000 packs you'll get another 400 bonus packs on top of your purchase. At a voucher price of ~2.5$ right now that's still a discount of 37.5% on these additional packs.
With all these boons it looks like flipping Chaos Legion cards is an almost guaranteed success story. Well, I'm not saying there's no way it's going to work out (I believe it will eventually) but I feel like people are ignoring some signs that flipping these packs is not going to work out as well as everybody seems to anticipate. At the height of FOMO last year most of the Splinterlands community was convinced that we'd sell out of packs within 24 hours. This obviously is not completely off the table, but at this point it's very very unlikely in my opinion.
So looking at older sets, we'll probably start strong, selling maybe a couple million packs within the first few hours. Afterwards, though, things will slow down considerably before they'll pick up in speed again once we get closer to the edition selling out. How long this is going to take, nobody knows, but it might be a few months. Yabapmatt stated several times that they are aiming at releasing a major edition once a week, so the print run is intended to actually last for a full year.
Obviously, as long as there are still packs for sale directly from Splinterlands flipping these packs is not going to work very well. Because of all the advantages listed above, nobody is going to pay even close to 4$ for a pack on the secondary market. So in order for the flipping strategy to work, packs have to sell out first. This is going to happen eventually, but even then, instant price appreciation is all but guaranteed. Again, this is due to several factors at hand:
With Untamed packs going for as much as 100$ in the past, there are a lot more people that intend to flip their packs. Especially at the height of FOMO it seemed like the easiest free money ever. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if up to 30% - 40% of the packs bought will remain closed in order to be flipped later. Even if we put the number to only 30%, that would mean that as much as 4,500,000 million packs would be available for flipping - that's quite the number and it's going to take a while until all these additional packs have changed hands at least once.
With ten times more packs available on the market there are also going to be a lot more Chaos Legion cards for sale on the market. The major driving factor for pack prices is obviously the worth of the cards that could potentially be found within these packs. Because of the sheer number of Chaos Legion packs available, it's very likely going to take a lot longer before the market for individual card dries out and prices start to move up in any meaningful way. Even then, prices won't move nearly as high or fast as the Untamed prices did.
The truth is, we simply don't know yet whether 15M packs was a good or bad number. Worst case, pack sales go very slow and it becomes apparent that there were just too many packs printed. This would lead to the next set most likely having a smaller print run again, making Chaos Legion packs less desirable than other editions, even in the long run. At this point, obviously, this is all still speculation. The upcoming land release is also going to increase demand for cards by quite a bit.
Personally, I do think that flipping Chaos Legion packs is a solid strategy and should work out eventually, but nevertheless, I feel like there are more risks involved with it than what people think, it's going to take way longer to realize profits, and these profits will be a lot lower than what people anticipate right now. So personally, I'm not going to buy any Chaos Legion packs to flip and will instead focus on getting additional copies of key cards/stack up on cards in general to prepare for the land expansion.
Whatever you decide to do yourself, keep in mind that it might take some months or even years before you really get to reap in your profits. So if you are okay with locking up your liquidity for quite a while, buying Chaos Legion packs for flipping might be a great idea. If you expect to need it within a few months, though, I'd advise against going for the flipping strategy and rather invest in other parts of the game.
And that's all from me for today, thank you all for reading and see you next time!
You never know, the latest two airdrop cards from the presale are legendary, just remember how you feel when you open a legendary from a pack.
Hmmm. That's got me thinking. I suppose it depends on the influx of new players too. If the increased marketing pays off then there will be more players wanting the packs.
My plan is to buy and open and keep some long term. Now I'm reconsidering the number. 😂

I'll take a close look at how things will be going tomorrow and in the days after. If we should sell out super fast (which I don't think) I absolutely will get some packs for flipping. But if we haven't sold out until the end of the week I'll stick to my plan of only getting cards :-)
Interesting. I'm still undecided. Keep blowing hot and cold. Especially as there are so many other games coming online now.
If I could buy directly from SL with my credit card I would definitely buy more. But those Paypal fees/exchange rate put me right off. 😁

I pretty much agree with your analysis - for me the sensible move is as follows:
I think Riftwatchers will provide a better opportunity for flipping.
Ya I'm on the edge about gold cards myself at the moment. I really never cared for them too much but it's looking like we want all the collection power we can get for land... I'm going to need an absurd amount of cards!
Well you don't need to manage the entire region from the outset!
True, I'll probably rent out most of it in the beginning and slowly increase the number of plots I work myself as the return comes in.
I am playing with house money so I don't think I can lose (sold VOUCHER during pre-sale and then bought credits on HIVE pump). So I plan on just buying some packs. Some of which I will open and the rest to hold on to.

Guess most of the old-timers are playing with house money by now, feels pretty good :D
Dealing with house money is the best. We win either way.

Great bit of common sense amidst all the fomo, glad to see you're writing again! :-)
