2021 $2 Niue Pirates of the Caribbean – The Flying Dutchman Silver Coin

“Black birds tend to like shiny things.” ~ The Bloody Raven

Enough! I’d rather be marooned on a desert Isle than listen to more belly aching between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard! With Johnny fired from his role as Jack Sparrow, Pirates of the Caribbean will not be the same.

It’s since October 2021 since I made my first post of this coin series, back then I’ve semi-sworn an oath to get only one Dutchman coin because I wasn’t very impressed with the lack of texture & depth of the reverse that left nae ship or captain resulted as mere 2D caricatures, barely recognizable.

You need only to behold that bilge rat royal on the Obverse then you can see which side the New Zealand mint rather put their resources into.

I’m sure Disney got their hefty licensing cut of the premium so what could I do to convince Disney to fix this QA problem?
Hmmm? 🤔

Two years later…

"WPLG 10 News in Ft. Lauderdale received a news report of a night-time theft that took place in the Bahamas at Disney’s Castaway Cay cruise ship terminal. The daring crime took place between 2 and 3 am under an overcast early morning.
Cruise Security is baffled how that happened under their regular rounds but blamed it partly on the rolling blackouts in this summer’s peak demand in expensive electricity rationing due to President Biden’s unworkable Conservation program that has now sinking him to about 4% in popularity polls.

“I was doing my rounds when the lights went out around 2 am and by the time the lights came back, pft the Dutchman was gone dude!”, said the unnamed source.

Stolen was a Disney’s stage prop of their flailing franchise, Pirates of the Caribbean, the Flying Dutchman. And here’s what the stage prop appears like. Should you or any member of the American public spots this, please report it to the Coast Guard or immediate authorities as soon as possible."

Length: 170 Feet
Sail plan: Three Masted, Square rigged
Last location: Castaway Cay Cruise ship terminal in the Bahamas
Armament:
20 36-pound cannons
18 24-pound cannons
8 3-pound cannons
2 tri-barreled Chaser Cannons

"Disney world spokes person Emmot Schwartz assures that the perpetrator will be caught, and the Dutchman be recovered. “Disney Corporation has put a considerable amount of investment into our production equipment to bring to the public top quality family entertainment and merchandise.”

Mr. Schwartz also revealed a clue to the perpetrator’s identity in the form of a note found in an empty Captain Morgan rum bottle. Uncorked and the note unfurled it said, “Dear Mr. Disney cabin boy, here are me demands, If yea wants to see yer precious Flying Dutchman then make the $2 Niue Pirates of the Caribbean silver coins more up to snuff, that is …‘Top quality merch.’ Reduce yea cut by 50% and hire back Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow.
Or the Dutchman will swim with the fishes,
Yours Truly, The Bloody Raven ☠️🙂"

"Sigh, only in my dreams."

While Disney takes substantial liberties around the feared ghost ship of Davy Jones, first is that Jones is not Dutch, here's a bit of bird's eye view.

The origin of the Flying Dutchman remains obscure since it's name was first uttered in the 1600s. She was a Dutch ship but her registry and construction unknown. Even her demise is speculation at best.
One story having the stricken merchant ship dashed by a storm while she awaits her pilot to guide her into the safe Cape town harbor only to perish with all hands.
Another story has her crew accused of a heinous crime and or overcome with a pestilence such that many ports refused her entry. And thus, condemned to sail the seas in an eternal penance.

Imagined or genuine, sworn personal sightings of this vessel have been reported for hundreds of years and are claimed to appear in the midst of a tempest or an omen appearing before misfortune.

So much subjective scuttlebutt had circulated long before any facts can make it to print. It's no wonder historians have so much to sort out let alone determining should she even existed at all.
Intriguing.
Mysterious.
The ghostly legend of the Flying Dutchman continues to represent the mariner's and landlubber's collective fear of the seas.

image.png

I think my suggestion to Disney Corporation will fall on deaf ears so I will continue to complete the minimum set of this series. The only way that I will get more than one is when they are priced comparable with generic rounds rather than an overpriced official licensed product.

Adding Silver and Crypto coins in my Stack for that rainy day, are you?”

And thank you for visiting my post today.

The #piratesunday tag is the scurvy scheme of Captain @stokjockey for #silvergoldstackers pirates to proudly showcase their shiny booty and plunder for all to see. Landlubbers arrrh… welcomed to participate and be a Pirate at heart so open yer treasure chests an’ show us what booty yea got!

Excellent posts on the Flying Dutchman. I heard of this before, not too familiar with the history. The Nuie Silver coin is beautiful !

There are many accounts through the years but there are also boat loads of contradictory evidence. Stories can change as communicated orally, written accounts by officers are best should they have a witnessed by first hand account rather than passed on.
The reverse could have been done better but would be okay if for not the Premium.

Thanks for coming aboard @olympicdragon

Such a beautiful coin.
To bad it’s not extremely detailed.

For what I paid for, It could have been better if they bought the quality level up on the Ship and captain same to that of the queen on the other side. I get the feeling it was a cost cutting measure to meet product trademark licensing demand$ of Di$ney.

That’s such a shame when that happens. But I think it is still a pretty cool coin to have 😉😎

And my dream is become Crypto rich enough to have built for me an 18th Century English styled light frigate with 22 working guns. I'd sail around the world to visit ship museums, famous ports and shipwreck sites, poke around the Caribbean, steal a movie prop or two for fun, participate in a few swashbuckling movie contracts. Imagine what videos i can produce!
My dream retirement.

Now you know. @urun

Further below in the comments is a photo of my alter ego posing on the Queen Anne's Revenge.

Thanks again, for showing the cool, Silver Niue Coin, Kerris L Ravenhill - @kerrislravenhill. I wonder how much Silver, is involved, in this Depp Drama.

Despite all the cutthroat characterizations, subjective accusations, and pervasive probing of their personal lives that can make even Mobey Dick blush,... there is no mention of silver due to privacy issues.

but I am not too keen on the coin.
I suppose it is all part of the appeal.

You will see that I already have the Empress, the third coin.
I'm only getting ONE coin of the forth, The Queen Anne's Revenge, which made minor appearances in the movie series.
In a couple of years I'd be expecting to see these selling in generic silver bins.

Always, with love 🤗🌺❤️

That's a really nice coin not sure what the QA issue you mentioned is, also I can't believe the prop ship was stolen that's quite the heist not sure why they would bother stealing it

Dream sequence.

It's a part of my retirement plan to become crypto rich so @silverd510 could build my 18th Century English Light frigate so I can sail down to the Bahamas and whisk the Flying Dutchman away in the dead of night to another secret locale to do a few shots. I, as the Bloody Raven, would return it later as I don't have a place to stow what actually is a piece of junk.
Speaking of Junk, the next PotC coin is the Empress.

The issue is that the Reverse looks very cheaply designed.

You are right sis; the Pirates of the Caribbean will not be the same without him.

You are right again; the detailing on the Flying Dutchman, does indeed lack! 😝

It will be interesting to see how the movie proceeds and hopefully, someone will do a better rendition of the Flying Dutchman! !LADY Take care sis! 💜🤗💐

I'd be expecting the to see these coins in the bargain bins in a few years. Chances are that the new Jack wouldn't be as popular.
Meanwhile there are more seaworthy coins put out by better mints.

Right back at ya Sis, !PIZZA

I wonder what movie he will do in the future, or if anyone will hire him? Any idea why they fired him?

As for the coins......it's still silver and if it's in the bargain bin, well all the better for all of us stackers!

Take care sis!💜🤗 !LADY

There is no documented registry on this ship. Normally there are records regarding the company building it, who commissioned it, ownership, logs, etc. All we got is myth.
For posterity I'd like to complete the set since my primary shtick is about Pirates. Next coin will be Captain Sao Feng and his Ship, the Empress.

Thanks for visiting @esther-emmanuel , Yo ho ho!

“You are without a doubt the worst pirate I’ve ever heard of.” (James Norrington) “But you have heard of me.” -Jack Sparrow

This ship is the fable of the seas, maybe people saw something due to sea sickness or hallucinations, but it is all tales of the unknown past.

Well, you are right about the mintage art that does not seem to portray the real image of the ship.

Do you have any commemorative of HMS Terror?

The Terror? now there's a COOL ☃️ coin to get of the tragic Franklin expedition. The wreck has been found not that long ago. There is a silver UK 50 Pence I will add to my shopping list. Maybe the HMS Erebus too. Did you see the movie?

I have watched the whole TV series, you can find it on AMC and can watch it on Prime Video, only Season 1 is relevant to The Terror and Erebus.

Very unfortunate ships in UK naval history. I'll look forward to see those coins in your collection.
