It was my admiration for a good murder mystery and the lovely sight of Saoirse Ronan on the film poster that made me watch this classic British flick. I do not regret it one bit because there's good comedy in it. The entertainment industry has fed us with a bit of whodunnit this year with the release of Knives Out, Death On The Nile and now another adaptation of Agatha Christie's play.

See How They Run (2022) is a comedy murder mystery set in 1953. It focuses on one of Agatha Christie's plays titled The Mousetrap and the murder of an annoying, cocky film director, Leo Köpernick (well played by Adrian Brody) that happens backstage in London West End theatre. Immediately, Inspector Stoppard (played by Sam Rockwell) is invited to solve this murder while forced to partner with an eager and young constable (played by Saoirse Ronan).

As it turns out, there are many suspects with strong motives in that theatre to kill Leo Köpernick. Will the experienced police inspector find this killer while working with a naive constable?

Review

This film is a humorous murder mystery with dark and mature themes. Arguably, I think murder mysteries are better performed by the British, especially adaptation of Agatha Christie. I admire not only the intrigue involved in finding the killer (the beauty of classic murder mystery) but also the use of narration and metacommentary in this film. The use of the theatre also lends it beauty.

I'll say this film is exceptionally well-cast. The mid-century setting can be best described as stylish and excellent. The pace is leisurely and enjoyable. The humour makes you feel good, the twists and mystery keep you on the edge of your seat and the visual effects are commendable. The brilliant camera work is portrayed in the split screens scattered throughout the film. It highlights the suspense and keeps the audience engaged.

I'm impressed with the cast's chemistry and performance. Saoirse Ronan delivered outstanding comedy with fantastic timing in every scene and a lovable presence. Her naive, innocent demeanour and accent made her performance likeable and endearing.

Ronan and Sam Rockwell performed perfectly together and it's nice to see them both having fun in a lighthearted film. I wouldn't mind seeing them together in more whodunnits. Although we have to decide how to resolve the murder that the queen of murder mystery, Agatha Christie, committed in this film or has it been swept under the rug (in case the director, Tom George, thinks we did not notice)?

Overall, this is a great and watch-worthy film. We are reminded that a film can be great without the need for a huge budget or popular cast or impressive CGI.

There are some films produced purposely for entertainment and See How They Run is one. I appreciate that it has some laughs and twists and doesn't take itself too seriously. I rate it a 4.7 star out of 5. You must watch it.

CGI isn't needed for this type of movie I guess, but a good plot and actors are always welcomed
