Music Monday or Alternative weekend?

avatar

It was a good suggestion of @slobberchops to get over a bit to the alternative weekend again. As electronic music in al kinds of variations passes by here a lot, and the car and the bike are usually the places where alternative music (mostly metal and hardcore) passes by, it ain't all that bad to also just listen something in the house every now and then.

When I am talking to friends about music, I don't really like disclosing my full taste in this. I know I like super dark music in all kinds of forms which often doesn't really has the most pleasant message hidden in there, and I really don't want the people around me to think I don't like life just because I listen to really angry music.

That doesn't at all mean that I am an angry person...on the contrary!

Maybe it is time to take in the blend today of the not super dark versions of everything, but hit the alternative crossover versions of all of this. Let's see what passes by on this windy and rainy day

The Gathering - Strange Machines

Booom, let's get back to the 90s straight away. Coming from the Mandylion album from the Gathering this was a song that was played on the radio a lot at that time. Funfact....This band has been there since 1989...Aint that something?

Kind of densed music for when you are at the office right? The Gathering surely opened this kind of music to the big public at that time and I really enjoyed listening to it as a kid. This is als the time that I went to Dynamo Open Air for the first time since this was about in the back yard always.

This next band is also from that time

Orphanage - From the mountains of Madness

I totally feel the same vibe with this as with the Gathering, but I never had the idea that this band got very big? I loved the combination of guitars and pianos, grunting male vocals and high females vocals all combined together. The video is really bad now I see hahahah.

I listened a lot to this 'By Time Alone' album in those years with my absolute favorite song in there being:

Deceiver

This song was also on the Dynamo Open Air sampler that you would receive if you returned a bag of garbage. Again, the combination of high and clean voices with the darker versions don't feel outdated at all.

Incubus - A certain shade of green

Talk about crossover coming in! I think everyone will known Incubus for the frontman Brandon Boyd forecoming appearance with his dreadlocks. With a bit of a punky sound coming to it but also having some scratches this was always a super energetic song that popped by in the 90s. Coming from their S.C.I.E.N.C.E. album this is literally the only thing I have ever heard and appreciated from them. Why? I'm not sure!

Funfact: The guitar player Mike Einziger was also the co producer from the single 'Wake me up' by Avicii who I read the biography by recently and I wrote this post about it.

Bjork - Army of me

It feels like I am a bit stuck in the 90s with this post, but I guess this was the best era for alternative and crossover music. Just for the record, this is about the only song by Bjork that I like, and most of it has to do with the underlying bass line in the song. That bass is super vibrant and bubbles the whole time. The rest of her work is qualitively really strong, but I really just don't get it. It is too vague for some reason which is a pity!

But this one I am sure you know. I was a kid and I was always grasped by the video which is about Bjork marching into a musuem and placing a bomb. Nothing special, I just really used to like it.

Funfact: I have a friend who looks exactly like her in appearance but she is just Dutch hahaha.

Mandylion is pretty special, and I'm still getting into parts of it, while systematically picking out a song for repeat play. This is how thing settle in my head.., today its this.

As usual, few outside The Netherlands have heard of this band. I have a lot of catching up to do.
