In my #WednesdayWalk I show you the place I visited, the Punta Ballena Lighthouse, and located on the Cerro de la Caranta. This hill has a ledge, the fishermen of the area call that ledge "the head of the whale", that's where its name comes from. This lighthouse is practically new, it was built in 2007 in order to improve navigation and the signaling system.

It is built of solid reinforced concrete, with a design reminiscent of the old Spanish forts of the colony. It was designed thinking that people could visit it and enjoy the spectacular scenery. The lighthouse is 28 meters high, when entering there are spiral-shaped stairs that lead to the 8 balconies that the lighthouse has and from where each one offers a view in all directions of Margarita Island. Each balcony door is identified with a name that refers to the place you can see.

Part of the Pampatar Hydrographic Station also works in the lighthouse, which is in charge of counting oceanographic activities. Inside the lighthouse there is a small museum with photos and some work teams for this purpose.

The lighthouse light is on from 6:00 pm to 6:00 am. and glows over 28 nautical miles. When you get to the top of the lighthouse there is a terrace where you have a 360 degree view of the Island. I would love to tell you that it really is a beautiful view, but as I went up and looked out of the balconies, it gave me a lot vertigo and it came down when I was going halfway, but as far as I could see, it was to take my breath away.
