My Sublime Sunday
'Science experiments', getting things done, and relaxing; three of my favourite things and often combined on a Sunday.
Above, it's not really fruitcake in the old cookie tin.
I awakened this morning to the sound of scraping. When I looked outside, I saw snow, and it's still snowing. This is only the second snowfall this winter.
That's the source of the sound! My neighbour is building a lit skating rink in his backyard. He's hanging strings of lights between those poles.
I had a short list of things to get done today and that would leave plenty of time for other things.
I started off well, washing a sweater.
Just admiring the pumpkin cookies I made last night as I clean the kitchen. I decided to assess their quality.
There are 4 dozen. That's what is in the old cookie tin.
With the kitchen clean, I was ready to make another mess, okay a 'science experiment' since I have never done this before. I found chestnuts in my grocery store last week and I decided to try roasting them.
First put an 'X' through the rounded side of the shell.
Then roast them slowly for 20 minutes, followed by 10 minutes at a higher temperature.
Clockwise, a chestnut in the shell, a chestnut with the shell removed, a chestnut that has been skinned. They taste somewhat like a cross between a potato and a sweet potato and they're soft when roasted. This experiment is a success so I will try it again sometime.
I had been playing the piano for awhile when the phone rang, and it was an old friend from England. It's been awhile, time to stop for a chat.
Two hours later... and now I was rushing to shovel the snow in front of the garage and get my car inside before the plough came.
The snow was still falling lightly as I shovelled the walk.
Late afternoon and I'm back inside warming up with a coffee and trying one (or two or three) of those cookies.
And now I get to admire my neighbour's handiwork. Sublime.

In Cyprus, chestnuts are eaten only roasted.
They can be boiled too but there is a Christmas song that goes "Chestnuts roasting on an open fire..."
I dont know about it.
Wonder what they taste like.
