Gearing up for the gardening season, Bless my Lettuce!

Finally have space to garden!!!! No more cramped balcony so hopefully our plants will have some space to breathe this year and produce a better harvest!

Our safe last frost date is the beginning of May so we can't start outside yet but we will be starting our seedlings inside over the next few weeks so they are ready to go when the weather turns.

I have already started some new batches of green onions as they grow so well just in a windowsill. I have some just transplanted to this mason jar:

And got some going a few weeks ago that look very healthy:

Next to my onions I have some Basil starting to sprout, usually I buy it pre-sprouted or grow from cuttings but these are from seed. I may leave one batch indoors and do another batch outside and see which does better as an experiment:

The big outdoors garden will be in this area:

It gets plenty of sun during the day but further back I will take advantage of the shade for my leafy greens as I think the sun and heat killed them last year :/

I have been investigating plants on our property to try to figure out if there's anything edible / dangerous / invasive etc.

So far I have found we have tonnnns of rose plants! Like everywhere, the thorns are a bit treacherous lol! We will doublecheck when things bloom to be sure but it looks like at the end of fall we can get a nice harvest of rosehips and maybe make tea and jam / jellies:

I also came across some GINGER on a walk, I saw it poking out of the ground so picked it and rehomed it in our yard. It was growing in a mossy wet area near a small creek so I replanted in a similar habitat:

There are a few other plants around, some harder than others to identify since they don't have leaves at the moment. This appears to be some type of sea oats. I'm not sure if I should cut off all the dead flattened bits at the bottom or if they will revive in spring:

I think this is an Alder tree:

OTHER COOL RANDOM NATURE STUFF:

Theres a huge downed tree adjacent to our property, the root system is amazing:

Lots of super cool boulders and rocks at the local beach, some of them seem to have fossilized marks in them:

We brought this one inside, seems to have been wood at one point, now it's rock:

Ocean pic (I am always disappointed with the ocean pictures I take because it's so vast theres no way to capture the full breadth of it)

Will post progress updates as the garden starts to emerge!

Nature is pretty awesome, we had a very warm day yesterday and the squirrels came out to play, they were so brazen and running right up to us 😂

I love our little red squirrels but the big greys wreak havoc on the gardens here and eat up my bird feed and chicken feed ,the little devils.

I bet that little guy would be easy to tame :)

I considered offering him some food lol would love a little squirrel friend but maybe I shouldn't encourage them too much because same last year squirrels were destroying our garden 🤣
