STEM PROMOTION ROAD SHOW
STEM PROMOTION ROAD SHOW
STEM is the acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics. It is a program designed and introduced in Ghana to support build a strong Technology base system to help equip students learning science and other Science related causes.
Over the years our educational system has not been able to empower learning of Science and Technology from our basic level to University. The teaching and learning of Science has been theoretical due to lack of resource and fundings to equip teaching and learning Science. This has really led the development of Science and Technology stand still. Now, our Leaders have realized the need to support Science and Technology.
This has brought the idea of STEM establishment on pilot basis in our second cycle institution. The STEM program is all about setting Technology base form that with well equip resources that would support Science students to easily learn through practical way. Under the auspices of the Minister of education, Yaw Osei Adutwum. Students are provided with many equipment like set of laboratory equipment, microscope, x-ray machine, robotic machines, computing lab and many other equipment the students need for the STEM promotion.
This week was the “STEM Promotion Road show.” The Minister, visited the STEM school in Accra Academy Senior High School to check out the extent the students under this STEM program have been absorbed this project. In fact most students have been able to manufactured simple robots and also fixed simple technological products like virtual vehicles. They were able to fix a lot of movable machines. Most of the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Students were commended for their good work.
I see the STEM project to be beneficial to the nation since I wonder why as a country we have not been able to utilize the knowledge of technology acquired. For instance we have not been able to used the scientific knowledge to invent machines like cars, electrical gadget with the exception of Apostle Kwadwo Safo who has been able to come out with the invention of cars and other machines. One the side of medicine, we have not been able to fully developed any scientific drugs with the exception of traditional with the use of herbs drugs.
The main factors which have led Ghana behind in terms of developing our Science and Technology is the finance and resources. We lack money to finance the projects of science and technology. So, there has been postponement of science and technology projects. One of the things is which is hindering our development of technology is Bad Leaders. Most leaders are power drunk to the extend that they wish to be on position always. They misuse the state funds. Instead of using some of the state's money to equip science and technology, they use the money for political campaign this make science and technology unattended. But a time has come to push science and technology so that the economic GDP can rise in order to raise the income status of the country. By this time round the Government of Ghana is paying more attention for the development of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. I'm excited for this initiative taken by the Minister and his team to empower science.
We can really made this STEM projects sustain and improve if we start from the basic schools. That's where I've problem with. The Government need to equip the basic schools starting from the Kindergarten and climb to the High School level. But, this is the case they have began it from the Second cycle. Like I said, money is our main challenge. But, we can call upon the philanthropists; those with Good Hearts who are endowed with money to come and support. We can solicit funds through opening of account and invite donors around the Globe. I think if people see the intention and our project proposal they would come to our aid to build STEM Project.
