Managing The Animals Physiological Status During The Unfavorable Weather Conditions
Animals possess certain physiological features similar to humans. That is why we have zoonotic diseases that can infest animals and at the same time be transmitted to we humans. In the cause of studying Animals health or Animals Science, we found out that certain concept of Animals Science are similar to studying the Anatomy of Humans. We would be meeting certain terminologies in common. This must tells us that we have things in common and certain environmental issues that we face, in the same way, Animals can also experience the same thing.
The rain has been very intensity over here in the tropics. We are aware that during moisture and excessive humidity, a lot of domestic Animals or farm Animals face the challenges of diseases like foot rot in cattle, sheep or goat or in general, most ruminant animals. Cocciduosis in poultry birds are likely to occur if the pens become very wet or humid. When the wood shavings or the sawdust in the pens become very wet as a result of the water spillage in the pens, it generate fumes. When the fumes is smelled by the poultry, it makes the poultry becomes very sick. Coccidousis is caused as a result of excess fumes in the pens. The perking of the fumes of the sawdust would exposed the poultry to cocciduosis of the poultry. It is very advisable to sanitize the pens of poultry regularly. The poultry farmer needs to change the wood shavings and sawdust regularly to prevent fumes in the poultry pens. You have to disinfect the poultry pens with recommended chemicals to prevent the invasion of bacteria.
Foot rots are normally caused by the wet kraal or pens of sheep and goats. If the kraals of cattle becomes very wet, it obviously expose the cattle to foot rots. The cattle faeces mixes with the soil. As it continuous raining, the kraals become very moist. When the animals steps in the kraal the feet of the cattle becomes very wet and this would definitely expose the animal to rotting of their feet known as foot rots. The kraal of cattle should be distilled when it becomes very wet or when we found out that the faeces have accumulated.
Pigs for instance are very susceptible to worms especially when they wallow in ditches or dirty water. It’s therefore very imperative to change the water of pigs regularly and stock new fresh and clean water. There is the need to deworm the pigs frequently to eradicate worms infestations. For free running or free range system, there is the likelihood for the pigs to contract with the worms very easily anytime they are administered with recommended dewormer, because the pigs are always found outside.
However, during the wet seasons, we need to provide water for the pigs in order for them to regulate their body temperature. An increase in temperature above 40 degrees would cause the animals to fall sick. Pigs are found to have a lot of fats in the skin adipose, hence they become very weak if the temperature exceed the optimum of 30 degrees. Poultry, cattle, sheep, goat and rabbit all need water to survive the adverse temperature. When the temperature become very high, the poultry begins to panting. Because, most of their feed are dry matters. The feed choke them if it’s too dry. All these can distract the animal’s health. The chicks pens should be checked if there is enough supply of light, especially the day old chicks. If the supply of heat is low, the chicks converge themselves at one place. If it come too hot, the chicks disperse themselves in the pens.
It's fascinating how zoonotic diseases and shared physiological features highlight our commonalities. Your explanation of environmental challenges faced by domestic animals is insightful. Proper sanitation, regular disinfection, and providing clean water are essential for maintaining their health.
There is a farm close to my house, and whenever they are about to transport the pigs, they poor them water to cool them off, preventing them from overheating and possibly die from increase in temperature.
Such environmental changes leads to a lot of diseases that are contracted by farm animals. Thanks very much for coming round.
