Legends of Madrid: the Angel Faust
Since time immemorial, angels have aroused the world's curiosity and imagination, since they are not in vain considered to be God's messengers and, moreover, constitute one of the turning points between Him and men.
Also, as in the world of men, angels have their powers and classifications and sometimes interact with humans, avoiding tragedies, such as the one who held Abraham's hand when it rushed to unload the terrible edge of his dagger on the heart of his firstborn; others, as in the cases of saints Roque and Jerome, inflict painful wounds, who knows if in order to awaken consciences.
Most are guardian angels who accompany us from the moment of birth, although their work is underestimated, when we reach adulthood, our rationalist education makes us look at the subject with disdain, until we have a serious incident and sigh with relief, we say that of: I have been born again!.
They are also angels, who, according to tradition, usually comfort us and accompany us to our final resting place, to the point that their silhouettes, beautifully sculpted on graves, have the effect of making us see cemeteries as abodes of the spirit, where Our relatives reside peacefully, always well protected and accompanied.
And there is, in addition, another type of angels, already described by the Evangelist John, who, bearers of long trumpets, have the terrible mission of announcing the arrival of the Apocalypse.
This would be the case of our Angel Fausto, who crowns the beautiful dome of the modernist church in the Almudena cemetery - they say it is the largest in Europe - and who carries with him a terrible legend, since rumors circulate among the people of Madrid that that the person who hears the sound of his trumpet is predestined to die soon.
Nobody knows what may be true in this legend, but there is a detail relevant enough to distance it from the many urban legends that circulate in Madrid: years ago, when it was restored, it was decided to remove the trumpet, that kept it a few millimeters from his mouth, to deposit it cautiously on his knees.
Believers or non-believers, popular wisdom has always affirmed that when the river sounds, it is that water carries: draw your own conclusions.
