[ENG-SPN] The Fountain of Neptune and the Passage of Light / La Fuente de Neptuno y el Pasaje de la Luz

Another of the turning points that define one of the great landmarks of this traditional and monumental Madrid that always captivates with its elegant beauty, we find it, without moving too far from this historic center, in this genuine fountain, dedicated to the figure of another of the great gods of the prolific Greco-Roman Pantheon: Neptune.

In front of it and its powerful archetypal charge and on the corner with that unique Carrera de San Jerónimo, which houses not only the square dedicated to Cervantes, but also that nest of scoundrels and rats that the Cortes Generales have become, another of the great landmarks of neoclassical architecture, surprises with its charismatic elegance: the superb Hotel Palace.

But the popular Fountain of Neptune also marks the beginning of that fundamental axis of Madrid, which, starting from the charismatic Prado Museum, the sovereign Gothic elegance of the old monastery of Saint Jerome the Royal and the complex Retiro Park, make up the most attractive and monumental part of what UNESCO named the Passage of Light a few years ago.

Otro de los puntos de inflexión que definen uno de los grandes hitos de ese Madrid, castizo y monumental que siempre cautiva por su elegante belleza, lo encontramos, sin alejarnos en demasía de ese Centro histórico, en esta genuina fuente, dedicada a la figura de otro de los grandes dioses del prolífico Panteón greco-romano: Neptuno.

Frente a ella y su poderosa carga arquetípica y haciendo esquina con esa singular Carrera de San Jerónimo, que alberga, no sólo la plaza dedicada a Cervantes, sino también ese nido de crápulas y ratas en el que se han convertido las Cortes Generales, otro de los grandes hitos de la arquitectura neoclasicista, sorprende por su carismática elegancia: el soberbio Hotel Palace.

Pero la popular Fuente de Neptuno, marca, además, el principio de ese eje fundamental de Madrid, que, partiendo del carismático Museo del Prado, la soberana elegancia gótica del viejo monasterio de San Jerónimo el Real y el complejo Parque del Retiro, conforman lo más atractivo y monumental de lo que hace unos años, la UNESCO nombrara el Pasaje de la Luz.
