[ENG-SPN] Paths and Heritage / Caminos y Patrimonios

There are actually very few travelers who, a few kilometers after leaving behind the singularities of the famous Somosierra tunnel, which marks the dividing line between the Communities of Madrid and Segovia, following the old roads that extended towards Burgos and the North of Spain, notice it, despite being, like a metaphorical lighthouse, on the side of one of the busiest highways and of course, outside the walls of a typical Segovian village, which is called Castillejo de Mesleon.

It is a Romanesque temple from the 12th century, of harmonious proportions and extraordinary beauty, which, although having seen a good part of its original originality altered in past times, still defines, nevertheless and in essence, that charismatic Romanesque architecture that characterizes the fertile and notable brotherhoods of itinerant stonemasons and bricklayers, who, provisionally settling in Segovia, protected by the work provided by the progressive reconquest of the territories that were occupied from the 7th century onwards, made this beautiful Community an incommensurable display of Historical, artistic and cultural heritage, which is well worth discovering.

Realmente, son muy escasos los viajeros, que, a los pocos kilómetros de dejar atrás las singularidades del famoso túnel de Somosierra, que marca la línea divisoria entre las Comunidades de Madrid y Segovia, siguiendo las antiguas calzadas que se extendían hacia Burgos y el Norte de España, reparan en ella, a pesar de encontrarse, como un metafórico faro, a la vera de una de las autovías más transitadas y por supuesto, a extramuros de un típico pueblecito segoviano, que lleva por nombre Castillejo de Mesleón.

Se trata de un templo románico del siglo XII, de armónicas proporciones y extraordinaria belleza, que, aun habiendo visto alterada en tiempos pretéritos buena parte de su primigenia originalidad, define, todavía, no obstante y en esencia, esa carismática arquitectura románica que caracteriza a las fértiles y notables cofradías de canteros y albañiles ambulantes, que, instalándose provisionalmente en Segovia, amparados en el trabajo proporcionado por la progresiva reconquista de los territorios que fueron ocupados a partir del siglo VII, hicieron de esta bella Comunidad, todo un inconmensurable muestrario de Patrimonio histórico, artístico y cultural, que bien merece la pena descubrir.
