[ENG-SPN] Legends that transcend borders / Leyendas que trascienden fronteras

It was in the 4th century when, apparently, one of the first appearances of the celestial paladin par excellence was recorded: the Archangel Saint Michael. It happened, according to that blessed treasure that is Tradition, on the top of Mount Gargano, in a cave inhabited by a terrible serpent or dragon, personification of Satan, whom he evicted, turning the place into a sanctuary dedicated to him, where people soon benefited from the power of miracles that placed special emphasis on the therapeutic aspect of healing, in a similar way to how centuries before the ephebe Apollo had fought and evicted the Python serpent from the Hellenic sanctuary of Delphi, settling in himself afterwards.

From ancient Greece to Italy, Tradition not only transcended generations, but also transcended borders and, like the wind of the Spirit, which we know when it blows but not where it ultimately goes, it also settled in some places in Spain, such as, for example, the very heart of a true orchard, which is the Natural Park of the Monastery of Piedra in Aragon and more specifically, on the top of a bare mountain, which bears the name 'the Devil's stone', where the heavenly archangel and the infernal prince tempered steel again, one emerging victorious and the other with his tail between his legs, which, after all, could well be interpreted as a transcendental question of change of cults.

The moral of the subject, after all, lies in a fundamental detail of every trip: if we disregard local legends and traditions, we also ignore an essential part that can enrich our experience and change our perspective, culturally encouraging, of the places we visit.

Corría el siglo IV, cuando, al parecer, se registró una de las primeras apariciones del paladín celeste por antonomasia: el Arcángel San Miguel. Sucedió, según refiere ese bendito tesoro que es la Tradición, en la cima del Monte Gargano, en una cueva habitada por una terrible serpiente o dragón, personificación de Satanás, a quien desalojó, convirtiendo el lugar en un santuario a él dedicado, donde las gentes no tardaron en beneficiarse del poder de unos milagros que ponían especial énfasis en el aspecto terapéutico de la curación, de una manera similar a como siglos antes el efebo Apolo habría luchado y desalojado también a la serpiente Pitón del santuario heleno de Delfos, instalándose él a continuación.

Desde la antigua Grecia a Italia, la Tradición no sólo trascendió generaciones, sino que, además, trascendió también fronteras y como el viento del Espíritu, que se sabe cuándo sopla pero no a dónde finalmente va, vino a instalarse también en algunos lugares de España, como es, por ejemplo, el corazón mismo de un verdadero vergel, que es el Parque Natural del Monasterio de Piedra aragonés y más concretamente, en la cima de un monte descarnado, que lleva por nombre ‘la piedra del Diablo’, donde arcángel celestial y príncipe infernal volvieron a templar aceros, saliendo victorioso uno y con el rabo entre las piernas el otro, lo que, después de todo, bien podría interpretarse como una cuestión trascendental de cambio de cultos.

La moraleja del tema, después de todo, reside en un detalle fundamental de todo viaje: si despreciamos las leyendas y las tradiciones locales, ignoramos también una parte esencial que puede enriquecer nuestra experiencia y cambiarnos la perspectiva, culturalmente alentadora, de los lugares que visitamos.
