Choosing Your Skill Set & Knowing "Your" Platform

avatar

20220208_070241_0000.png

I was talking to a friend of mine recently about having no tangible real-time skills. I couldn't play the guitar, paint an art, solve mathematics, do carpentry work, neither do I have any engineering nor mechanic skills. These were skills that could fetch you a lucrative job back in the days if you could back it up with a degree. Fast-forward to 2022, education has become very expensive, acquiring a degree means you'll need other knowledge to put food on your table.

He However pointed out that I had good oratory skills, my writing skills too were good. I had these fringe skills back in the days, and it was difficult to find a platform to showcase them. One of the reasons why Africa as a whole might still be backward is not recognizing digitization as a game changer. The truth is, most real-time economy is static, they provide opportunities for skill sets that are only relevant for the moment and ignore bringing online skills to the table being that the aspect of job seeking and money making is becoming interestingly dynamic.

Economically Implosive?

The way the Nigerian economy is structured, many people who are dependent on educational skills to thrive will implode. This is because originally Nigeria has no platforms, people who have skills turns entrepreneurs with little or no funding. The economy is fashioned to take from the poor and give to the those in power, in form of a reverse "Robin Hood".

One of the reasons why in anti-education/degree in Nigeria is because the essence of education in Nigeria is to milk people of their hard-earned money rather than impact them rightfully, then provide a platform for those that have excelled in their field. Take a look "microbiology" for example, it's an expensive course of study that's often given to students who fail to cut it in medicine or pharmacy. Originally Nigeria does not have any need for "micro" education.

Real Or No Use Cases?

There are no firms in Nigeria focused on production of anything on a "Micro" scale, but they offer these courses to milk people, rather than provide alternatives. It's pathetic that people are dependent on the government for platforms, when people begin to understand that education is a money making venture, they will discover that have digital skills is a more use of one's time than having skills that are aligned to solving problems in an economy that hardly provides opportunities for those given skills and profession.

Back to the concept of skills, I feel the world has been realigned, it's constantly changing and the people who would remain wealthy are those that understand the need of people on a massive scale, how these needs changes overtime and then caters for them appropriately. In the world nowadays you don't need skills to be rich, all you need are multiple platform of expression, understanding the dynamics of digitization, focus on the prospects of the internet and finding your place.

This isn't to say many wouldn't make it through the real-time system what I am saying is how many people would? We don't need telescopes to understand that the world is unfair in the distribution of opportunities and resources. People in different places have different need and different skill sets but placed in different geographical location.

The world being huge alone makes it difficult for global interaction especially for the purposes of commerce and when you take a look at how the internet has bridged this gap you'll understand that the concept of commerce is being revolutionized which will change lives in ways which narrow-minded government system and structure have been unable to. I used to do a lot of "crowdsourcing" in the past.

Meet the needs of people by providing them with my online presence and efforts, and I was paid for them, inasmuch as it wasn't life-changing money, how would I have been able to earn it if I didn't reckon with the fact that the internet in itself is a platform?

Keying To The Richness Of The Internet

Essentially the richness of the internet has allowed people to find their place, a platform and even had the opportunity to monetize them. Take a look at crypto, it's vast to the extent that it thrives on the adoption of people to continue gaining attention and traction.

The way the technology works contradicts so many laws of economics, proving that knowledge garnered from education can be static, but the evolution of technology is more likely to change the lives of people financially. With crypto, so many people have done the unthinkable, established themselves, rather than align themselves to the hierarchical valuation in the economic system of their country.

For example, being disabled might mean that a person has lost their economic value in real-time, but this aspect is being redefined by the internet and crypto to prove that anyone with a brain can change the narrative.

@josediccus, do you know, in a specialized world, generalists tend to thrive the most in their lives? Even if they take time to do it. Trying different things gives you a variety of experiences in many different areas. It prepares you for all the possible situations. You don't need to deep dive into everything. As you mentioned, the internet and tech have provided us with ample opportunities and we can make money by doing what we love from the comfort of our homes.

You're correct, deep diving into everything takes away your ability to explore into prospects that can be monetarily impactful. Having programming skills for example is monetizable on the internet even when a firm or company isn't really available and this is one of the best aspects of the internet. It means people can acquire the skills they want and put it to good use immediately.

I feel the world has been realigned, it's constantly changing and the people who would remain wealthy are those that understand the need of people on a massive scale, how these needs changes overtime and then caters for them appropriately.

The politicians are doing somewhat the opposite. They indeed understand the need of people on a massive scale, but they do everything to not fulfill them, while taking (stealing) from them as much as possible. So they are still rich, while most people live in poverty. Some people in deep/extreme poverty.

At least this is what the government of my country (Hungary) is doing. I live with multiple disabilities under the local minimum wage.

Have a nice day. All the best. Greetings and much love from Hungary.

In reality, government will be government. I live with health issues too and it was always difficult to compete with people who are more educated, physically healthy and a whole lot of other things.
However, the bigger evil is government giving the nation to monopolists, while exploiting the system themselves. These people knows the need of people and have the backing of government to exploit people. It's how it works in Nigeria.

I also feel like I have no skill set; I can't make up or make hair, or do most things but hey does cooking count 😆

Anyways I think I also have the oratory skill set because I write and I can create content but it isn't enough, been wanting to get into tech.

That is the plan for this year.

Those set of skills you have are better optimized when the right platform is there. Take a look at Nigeria, is such a platform there? I mean people with no real-time skills are millionaire all over the world, but then with the internet as a platform, these people have digital skills, permutative skills, analytical skills of which without the internet, these skills are just fringe. Some of these things you mentioned are monetizable in the right platform.

Well, we are in Nigeria so if we are talking skill set right now unless getting remote roles, they have to be useful here which writing isn't as much outside hive, especially as a beginner.

A whole lot of skills aren't useful here at all.

I have been writing for 8 years now, even outside hive. I was paid poorly for it but it was still something. Funny thing is, it was even an internet gig.
Our country is messed up.

I wrote for websites and blogs as well as offered writing gigs on fiverr, it was how I came to be better. But there's probably no organisation in Nigeria where you can write and get paid.

That's why I am all for a humanistic education model, where you teach people how to learn, how to think critically.
Then, ideally, they can navigate the world by themselves and should technology advance, they have the skills to teach themselves the newest thing.

That being said, I think a trade like carpentry or other hard skills, can always feed you and is worth the effort.

btw: microbiologists can work on algae cultivation and things like bioreactors and stuff and even though the processes are driven by microscopic forms of life, those facilities can be huge.

Exactly, they're huge, but in Nigeria it's basically usemest studying it in Nigeria. I mean, it's the real deal in other countries, but being that Nigeria is still a developing country some of these sectors aren't in place to cater for people who are professional in this field.

Carpentry is great, I was lamenting about how queer it feels on the surface not having any real-time skills.

In the Nigeria educational system, education is a scheme to raise money for the government majorly. It's why system 50 years ago are still used as models nowadays, this is why it's redundant and hardly helps people provide an real world value.

Yes to a large extent all aspect of life matters. Schooling or skill sets, it all matters.
Heavy engineering machines that are used to produce daily consumables are designed and manufactured with acquired knowledge of core engineering systems.
Skill personnel’s can only man the operational sector, repair and maintenance but to proffer solutions to problems, you need a verse idea of the system.
Every aspect is needed, it is interwoven.

It's so sad that the whole educational system right from the grassroots is completely flawed.

I had a conversation with a secondary school teacher recently who kept lamenting about the stupid curriculum that makes "civic education" compulsory for all students... Plus a whole bunch of other irrelevant subjects being taught to students.

Technology is always improving and I think it's opening up the market for everyone. The job market is always changing and with automation coming, I think the job market is going to look very different in a decade. So I think people need to adapt and they may have to learn new skills or be left behind.

Automation in Nigeria wouldn't be bad, it'll change a lot of narratives and even thin down some unnecessary offices in the public sector.

Like seriously man, you just opened my eyes to alot of hidden truths in our country Nigeria..
How comes in Nigeria universities there are courses one will come and study that you know and clearly know after studying it there's no place for you work, there's no field for you to express your impacted knowledge from school, wowwww, this is rediculous!
I like the fact that am not even centered on Nigeria's economy and waiting for daily bread from the government, hmmmm. I am a student of Biochemistry presently on my I.T left with just a year to round up my degree program, bro infact I am not looking at that certificate to take me to anywhere oo, I thank God the nature of my course is in line with the kind of future investment I want to pursue, it's fortunate that education was the keys to success but really unfortunate that the government has changed the keys, being a successful man doesn't mean that you will not eat, but studying in Nigeria is like being a successful man without food to eat it doesn't even make sense.
The internet is doing a whole lot of good job, am enlighten by what spoke here

Back to the concept of skills, I feel the world has been realigned, it's constantly changing and the people who would remain wealthy are those that understand the need of people on a massive scale, how these needs changes overtime and then caters for them appropriately.

I feel reignited, because this is the mentality am culturing in my head and working towards that
The internet is a good place to start from, the internet has made it easier for youths to be able to cater for themselves totally outside the context of the the fake promises of our Governments.
Am really ignited by your post bro
Thank you for this wonderful piece bro🙏🙏💜

While I am not anti-government, I feel that so many of our educational practices are redundant and unnecessary and not serving any specific economic purpose. I will keep standing on my view that education in Nigeria is only a money making scheme for the educational sector and everyone in charge.
People are not taught survival courses and survival skills in which they could use to live in an economically inept state.
Let us forget the fact that education is just to bag degrees and hardly solve real time issues in the country, end of the day after spending all the money people are left with having to depend on their technical skills to actually survive financially

I strongly agree with you boss
I just came to realize this, you know I was initially blind folded with the fact that the community is just after children attending high institutions no matter what it should be tagged to their names that they are degree holders but I have just come to realize something and definitely will work towards this knowledge maybe not really for me again but my children, I will throw down this knowledge to them and people around it will do a lot of help.
Thanks bro you're an icon of knowledge I wonder when you where talking about not having a skill
Isn't impacting knowledge a good skill?😁😁 That's by the way thou.
Thanks once more🙌🙌🙏💜

Sometimes I just feel like you take the words from my mind and beautifully present it in a well written post.

The world is indeed changing and this so called country is refusing to change with it. Even when the world wasn't like this there used to be skill acquisition added to our educational curriculum, now when it's most needed, it seems to be absent.

A lot of people underate their skills, some have skills and still don't know they're skills. Like you said, oratory skills is really something but people push aside, Dale carnegie made lots of money teaching public speaking to really wealthy people and with time they saw themselves become wealthier, if you can talk and make people listen you have one of the strongest powers In the world.

Another amazing skill is writing, they're really a lot of skills, communication is a skill, content creation is a skill, these things are generating lots of money for people than the regular barbing and carpentry work does. If only a lot of people can understand and learn. There's no more time to rely on government and our educational systems anymore, now we actually teach ourselves and help ourselves grow.

Crypto is a plus in our lives and I'm glad nigerians adopted it as fast as possible (we no dey dull) and I'm seeing a brighter future for us without any thing that has to do with government empowerment. A time would come when the amount of people seeking white collar jobs would drop drastically, that's what the government is fighting, they enjoy seeing us overly reliant on them.

Great post!!!...enjoyed reading this one ❤️😊✅

Most of the skillset that is being adopted by young people in Nigeria currently has everything to do with the internet. Now you should take a look at how the Nigerian government is demystifying the internet, firstly It was anti-Twitter then banning of Crypto. Even people who decides to be entrepreneurs do not have funding schemes to help them.
Most sophisticated countries have funding schemes where they gift exceptional entrepreneurs the money to start up a business.
Take a look at Nigeria even the little jobs that we have are hoarded by the people who are at the top.
Fine, we have decided to take cryptocurrency as the way to go but due to the fact that the government is scared of what crypto might allegedly dominate the naira, they're anti crypto. In reality, skills don't even have the platforms to showcase them, at the end of the day, we're back, relying on the internet again

So many talking points in one post, it's crazy how you demystified a lot of complexities in government policies, our outdated educational system, internet of things and disadvantages of living in the third world. How amazing would it be if we can harness and take more advantage of the internet, utilizing and maximizing its potential as a cutting edge tool it really is and not using it to promote fraud and scam. Great work @josediccus

Thanks for your comment, in reality, there are many anomalies to almost every sector in Nigeria and it's probably the reason why a lot of things don't work, especially when it comes to establishing a platform that can serve the citizenry.

How amazing would it be if we can harness and take more advantage of the internet, utilizing and maximizing its potential as a cutting edge tool it really is and not using it to promote fraud and scam

To some extent, we already understand this, but it has to begin from top down in order to truly change the mindset of the government and the police, including other government parastatals. We're backward if we keep seeing the internet as only a tool for scam.

There is nothing bad about these things. But the disheartening part is neglecting the vast opportunity the internet can provide either if you possess this skills or not.
Even at that, this wonderful opportunities cannot be accessed if you do not have at least one digital skill. Hence, the need to learn first. But sadly we seldom fail to understand that there is a process for everything.

The internet has a lot of potential and opportunities and to tap this skills you must be creative and know a platform you can use your skills. Internet is already changing the world

I perfectly understand the points you are driving. These are the stuffs that runs through my head almost everyday. The lack of platforms for people to jump start their race relative to ther talents or skills is really baffling. Although the lack onky affect the masses to a large extent. Everyobe has something he or she can do but can it be sustained..? Its nkt that the rich has some exceptional featured but they have what it takes for those features to surpass their incubation stages.
By the way, I have a dream of having something like a Lab, not like the microbiology lab😂. But its a lab,as I call it, cos people would come and pitch any kind of idea, showcase your self, even relax..then if we see how serious you are,we fund your idea!! How do you see this?

It is a shame that people feel they need to rely on government. I have been one such person but have learned that it is the individual who creates their own opportunity. Time to take back personal power.

It's been long while since Nigeria was a government for the people. To survive you have to look past a lot of the economic intimidations and begin positive reflection or else a life of crime might start looking interesting. I see a lot of talented individuals but who do not have platforms to showcase them, I have long since accepted that out government will not provide the basics of anything and it's been a life-changing mentality
