Imminent eruption in Iceland that could affect Europe

Iceland has suffered 4,038 earthquakes recorded in the last 48 hours, in a specific area and they have ordered the evacuation of an entire municipality and warned its population to prepare for a volcanic eruption, the map has shown the 4,038 earthquakes, it is evident where the eruption will be, the evacuees have been about 3,400 inhabitants of Reykjavík, a fishing town near the blue lagoon, which is a famous geothermal spa and one of the main tourist destinations in Iceland.

Experts believe that the lava pocket must have extended below this town. They have calculated that the lava flow is about 10 km long and runs about 5 km deep towards the sea, although it is possible that it already exists. lava exists about 800 m from the surface.

The authorities also fear for the Svartsengi power plant that produces energy for 30,000 inhabitants, although the situation is critical, experts do not expect this eruption to be as strong as that of the Eyjafjallajökull volcano that erupted in 2010 and caused a huge cloud of ash. which halted air traffic in Europe for several weeks, more than 100,000 flights and some 10 million passengers were affected.

All this happens because Iceland is part of the mid-Atlantic ridge, a mountain range that extends along the Atlantic Ocean from north to south. These mountains, despite being between 1000 and 3000 m high, are almost all submerged, the most characteristic feature. Importantly, between these mountains and along the ridge extends a valley whose walls reach 3 km in height and is the gap through which the marine floor is expanding and separating America from Europe and Africa.

In Iceland the ridge comes to the surface and the crack there also continues to open at a rate of about 3 cm per year and this is what triggers the intense volcanic activity that gave rise to the island. The currently affected area is the Fagradalsfjall volcanic system, It emerged about 6,300 years ago and do not think of it as a typical volcano with its Mount Fuji-style mountain in Japan or the Teate in Spain. Fagradalsfjall is a set of eruptive fissures and various volcanic cones. It was active 800 years ago and had remained since then. quiet until April 2021.

The video above is from said eruption, in 2021 a fissure 600 to 700 m long opened and the lava covered an area of at least 1 square km; Icelanders have been living and dealing with volcanoes for centuries and know how terrible they can be. Unfortunately, in our time, volcanic eruptions are a magnet for high-risk tourists looking for shocking images or spectacular selfies.

Hive is simply wonderful. I live over here in my own little world without being aware that these disastrous things occur in some part of the world. Thank you so much @jorgebgt, your post is highly educative and I so much appreciate that.
