DIY CROCHET SUNFLOWER BAG

(Edited on Canva)

One of the few things I wanted to try was making a crocheted bag being incorporated with leather materials. I've previously had my eye on this style of bag, but for various reasons I haven't had the opportunity.

I had already seen a lot of designs and, if I had the supplies on hand, I was considering making a sunflower pattern for myself.

Then last month, when we visited my 3 siblings in Cebu, my sister, Jennisa handed me her haul of stash as she was too busy with her current job and have no time for crafting them.

Her stash consists of yarns, and a lot of different kinds of leather bag parts: the bottom or the bag base, the upper part of the bag, and the handle. It also comes in a variety of colors, including black, off-white, pink, brown, and dark green.

That time, I was so thrilled that I quickly ditch what I'm crocheting at that moment and I hastily grab a pair of leather bags and some yarns so I can start right then.

Good thing, she had also some brown and golden yellow color of an 8ply Monaco mercerized yarn, the exact color and right material I needed to make a sunflower bag.

There are three types of Monaco Mercerized cotton yarn when it comes to its thickness: 3ply, 5ply and 8ply (refer on the left picture for reference). Each types differs in length also.

When I started crocheting 12 years ago, my first yarn being used was this 3ply Monaco mercerized cotton. I used this with my crochet tops and short and some other small projects. That time, 5ply and 8ply was not yet available in the market. I think the 5ply and 8ply were introduced last year but I only had used the 5ply so far.

For this specific project, since I want it to be thicker and be more sturdy, I decided to use the 8ply Mercerized cotton. In the picture, I mistakenly placed the 2.5mm crochet hook instead of the 2.75mm, that I originally used for this project. ✌️😅

Materials:

As you see on the lower portion of this picture, those are the leather bag parts that I used for this project: the bottom or the bag base, the upper part of the bag, and the handle. You will notice those small holes on the bag base and the upper part of the bag that are already made for easy crocheting.

Procedure:

I started by making my sunflower design in granny square so I could attached it easily. All in all, I made seven pieces of it and attached it to one another.

After attaching, I made a single crochet on both the upper and lower part of these granny squares and I had to take note the number of single crochet I made so I could estimate the number of single crochet I'll be making at the base of the bag and the upper part of the bag.

I noticed that it's a little bit shorter, so I tried adding more stitches on the upper part of the sunflower granny square. Since I only have 1 yarn ball of 8ply brown color yarn, I decided to make a mesh type design on the upper part.

Before attaching the top part leather of our bag to our sunflower design, I made a row of single crochet so I could merge the two parts easily.

So this was how it ended and I fell in love with this bag. 😍 I haven't made any lining on this bag yet as I remember all the ordered bouquets that I should be doing first. 😅

I just finished this project in two days with lots of interval house chores.🤣

Let me know your comments and suggestions below and on how I can improve the next time I'll be making these crochet bag with leather parts.

Enjoy your day and God bless everyone.😘

It looks so pretty! And you make it look like it's easy but I know it's not. It takes creativity to be able to fit them perfectly like that. :D

Hala ang ganda! Di pa ko nakagamit ng 5ply monaco, meron na rin palang 8ply.

Kahit san talaga mapunta, pag crocheter ka, crochet talaga agad agad eh. haha.
