The Devastating Impact of Insect Pests on Vegetable Gardens and How to Mitigate It

HELLO HIVE!

  • "Welcome gardeners, let's uncover how insect pests can impact our vegetable garden and how we can fight back."

Vegetable gardening is the beautiful act of growing edible plants in a dedicated space, whether in backyards or small community plots using setups like small containers or raised beds it is far more than just a hobby, you can even view it as some form of recreational activity that takes our mind off a lot of things.

It is hugely important to manage insect pests in gardens to reduce loss and having different control measures to combat this is probably the only way to keep our garden safe from this pest

The extent of damage can be so scary and painful with the sight of how much damage they've done to my garden showing just a little example of how far insect pests can damage our gardens

Damage to plants:

Stunted growth, defoliation, fruit/flower loss.

The vegetables that are in my garden are mostly leaf vegetables and now the leaf which is the most cherished part of these vegetables are gone because of the strong insect infestation and there is no way of salvaging what's left the only option now is to uproot the vegetables, clear the garden and start again

The cost of replanting the vegetables and the loss that has been experienced is the mark that their damages have left behind.

Insect pests have a way of spreading so fast that we usually don't see them coming until the damage is at a certain advanced stage especially if we don't inspect the garden regularly.

Factors That Make Gardens Vulnerable

Improper watering process is the most obvious trigger to insect pest activities with other factors like lack of diversity and monocropping causing just a fraction of the other triggers to insect pest infestation in gardens

The best ways to mitigate pests are by using crop rotation, and pesticides and by handpicking the pests if the pests are large enough for our eyes to notice them.

When pests attack, the plant, if no action is taken instantly, get stunted and might die off
