sorghum bicolor (guinea corn). Why we farmers do time when to plant and harvest it?
HELLO HIVE
Sorghum bicolor is a common crop in Nigeria and the name Sorghum bicolor is not it's common name around here you will rather here the name guinea corn, this crop is very common around parts of west Africa with a average maturity period of six months. This is a period where we see it mostly around this part of Africa because of the need to plant guinea corn in periods that suit it the most.
Guinea corn is one of the worlds most important cereals crop and it can be used in several fields of life like animal food, human food and one very important compound called ethanol, it is also an annual crop that can grow as tall as 3-4 meters and to harvest it we have to bend it down to harvest the seeds that are on top on the crop. In terms of importance I think only rice, maize and wheat have more importance than Guinea corn.
Planting Guinea corn takes place around periods where maize is about to be harvested in region which is close to the period where dry season is approaching because Guinea corn needs rainfall from the point it starts growing to the point where the plants starts maturing, if it rains longer than that the crop begins to be affected by the rain and the seeds begins to get spoilt on the plant and then it turns brown which sometimes makes it not to be consumable.
Loses like this are avoided by planting in calculated periods that will not be affected by rainfall, at this point rainfall has stopped and the guinea corn is equally producing which makes it the right point for it to produce.
